Ben Alnwick - Barnsley (free transfer)

Keith Hill has bolstered his goalkeeping options by snapping up goalkeeper Ben Alnwick on a free transfer, subject to clearance from the relevant footballing bodies.

A regular with England at many youth levels, the now-25-year-old has penned a two-year deal at Oakwell and looks set to compete with Supporters’ Player of the year, Luke Steele, for the number one jersey.

Speaking to barnselyfc.co.uk, Ben said: “I’m happy to be here. I’m out of contract so I’ve been looking for a club and it’s great to come here. I’m going to try and compete with Steeley (Luke Steele) who is a top ‘keeper.”

“It’ll be good for both of us - pushing each other every day.”

Ben started his career with Sunderland as a trainee before making a move to Spurs in January 2007 for a handsome six-figure fee. Since which he has made appearances on loan at the likes of Leicester City, Norwich and more recently Leyton Orient last season.

Jordi Alba - Barcelona (€14 million)

2012-07-05_PRESENTACION_JORDI_ALBA_011.v1341509419.jpg

The player admits that "I've realised my dream" of becoming a FC Barcelona player

"I want to adapt as quickly as possible; I know the philosophy of the Club and most of my new teammates"

On his departure in 2005: "I left with a clear conscience and with my head held high"

Sporting a giant smile across his face, Jordi Alba simply couldn’t hide his joy throughout his first press conference as an Azulgrana. “I’m happy to come home, with my family and my people. I’ve realised my dream,” he said to the press with vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu and football director Andoni Zubizarreta at his side.

Bartomeu said that that the Club had been after the Jordi Alba all year and Zubizarreta added that Jordi Alba is “dynamic, deep, intense and he has excellent technical ability. He’s good with both feet, he can play in different positions and he’s enormously competitive.”

Jordi Alba couldn’t hide his emotion when he talked about his time he spent in FC Barcelona’s youth academy. He was visibly touched when a video of him playing on the field next to the Miniestadi played on the large screens behind the press table. The player talked about his exit from the Club in 2005 and his willpower to make a name for himself in the world of football: “no one likes to hear that they have to leave, but my conscience was clear and I left with my head held hi. I believed in myself.”

“Before I was a striker, now I’m a left back”

Seven years later, sitting in the Sala París, he knows that he’s returning to a home that he knows very well: “I’m going to play for the best team in the world and I want to adapt as quickly as possible. I know the philosophy and most of the players. I’ve changed the way I play, before I was a striker and now I’m a left back or an attacking midfielder.”

“It will be phenomenal with Vilanova”

The player said that Tito Vilanova called him after the Euro 2012 final. “When the tournament was over I talked with Tito and he congratulated me for agreeing to come to Barça. They have told me marvelous things about him and Guardiola. Vilanova is very capable, I’m sure we’ll have a phenomenal run with him.”

Alba also talked about the relationship he has with the Barça players that play for the national team: “I get along great with the Barça players. I’ve known some of them for a long time. When we were on international duty I could tell they wanted me to come to Barça.”

The player, who will play with the number 18 on his back, praised David Villa, his ex-Valencia teammate: “we were together at Valencia. He was already a star and I had just arrived and he helped me a lot. When I made my debut with the national team he was among the first to call me, and now, with my signing, he was one of the first to write me and congratulate me.”

Pavel Pogrebnyak - Reading (free transfer)

Reading Football Club are delighted to confirm that the deal to sign striker Pavel Pogrebnyak has been completed, after the Russian international was granted a work permit.

The sought after 28-year-old joins the Royals on a free transfer and has agreed a four year contract at Madejski Stadium.

Director of Football Nick Hammond said: "We were always hopeful that a permit would be secured but it's still great to get the deal done.

"It'll be nice get him in and working with the lads - he's a great individual, and will fit really well into group."

Manager Brian McDermott added, "We're delighted. It's been a long process to get Pavel to the club and now he's officially a Reading player and everyone is looking forward to working with him.

"Having met Pavel, he is a top guy, his work ethic is excellent and I'm sure he will be very important to our group in the coming years."

Pogrebnyak will take a break to recuperate from his involvement in Euro 2012 before arriving at Hogwood Park for the first time.

There were a number of clubs across Europe interested in the experienced forward, and this signing is a major coup for the club - and simultaneously a signature of intent, especially given a summer that has already seen the arrivals of Garath McCleary and Danny Guthrie.

The frontman had a successful loan spell at Fulham at the tail end of the 2011/12 campaign - scoring six goals in 12 games for the Cottagers.

He had previously made a name for himself in the Russian Premier League, notably with Zenit St. Petersburg - whom he helped steer to victory in the 2008 UEFA Cup - finishing as the tournament's joint top scorer.

The following season he found the net in his club's 2-1 European Super Cup victory over Manchester United, before experiencing Champions League Football against the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid.

Pogrebnyak arrives on a Bosman following the expiration of his contract with Bundesliga outfit Vfb Stuttgart - for whom he scored 19 goals in 56 (+25) appearances.

Jon Otsemobor - MK Dons (free transfer)

Milton Keynes Dons have today (Thursday) completed the signing of former Sheffield Wednesday defender Jon Otsemobor as a free agent.

Jon, 29, becomes Karl Robinson's first signing of the new season, putting pen to paper on a one-year-deal.

The pacy right-back played a part in Wednesday's promotion success last season and has attracted a lot of interest this summer. Jon will offer strength to Robinson's side in a position that often caused the Dons problems in 2011/12.

Dons manager Robinson said: "Jon's a guy I tried to sign last summer as part of the Potter deal from Sheffield Wednesday, but that never materialised.

"I've known him since he was a kid so I've worked with him before. He was out for most of last season with an injury but I believe, if we can keep him fit, that we've got the best right-back in the league."

A former Liverpool trainee, Jon made six appearances during his time in Merseyside with his debut coming in a 3-1 League Cup win over Southampton.

After several periods on loan at Hull City, Bolton Wanderers and Crewe Alexandra, Jon signed permanently with Rotherham United in July 2005. Soon after, the defender re-joined Crewe Alexandra where he went on to over 45 appearances in his second season with Dario Gradi's men.

In 2007, the Liverpudlian full-back made the switch to Carrow Road, featuring over 100 times for Norwich City, before enjoying a spell with Southampton.

Jon's most recent venture was at Hillsborough where he spent two years in the Owls colours, making 37 appearances.

Jon spoke to mkdons.com after completing a stringent medical (pictured above) and said: "I've known Karl for a while so I'm delighted to link up with him and the team.

"One of the main reasons why I've come here is the style of football the Dons play, which suits me down to the ground. I can't wait to get going."

Yeah going through that Brazilian squad for the Olympics I thought there were way more than three over 23 year olds.

Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has opted to continue his career in Major League Soccer with the Montreal Impact.

Nesta, 36, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, was out of contract in Milan and will officially join the recently formed Canadian club upon receiving his international transfer certificate.

"I'm very happy to be here,'' Nesta told their official website. "Despite some offers to continue my career in Europe, I was looking for a new challenge and wanted to play in MLS.

"Upon visiting my friend Marco (Di Vaio) to see him play his first game with Montreal, I met great people in this club. I really liked what I saw and I was convinced Montreal was where I wanted to be.''

Rome-born Nesta joins fellow Italians Di Vaio, Bernardo Corradi and Matteo Ferrari at the club.

He came through the youth ranks at Lazio and then played for the Eternal City club's first team for almost a decade before moving to Milan in 2002, completing a total of 417 games in the Italian top flight.

He won three Serie A titles, enjoyed Champions League success twice with the Rossoneri - in 2003 and 2007 - and was included in UEFA's Team of the Year on four occasions.

He was indeed stabbed in the arse, it was covered in the echo last week as the fella that did it was up for something else as well in court.

Junior Fernandes - Bayer Leverkusen (undisclosed fee, reportedly €3 million)

Bayer 04 have further strengthened the first team squad with the signing of the Chile international Junior Fernandes. Leverkusen agreed a five-year-deal to 30 June 2017 with the 24-year-old from Chilean champions Universidad de Chile, who secured the league title in the second leg of the Final on penalties against O‘Higgins de Rancagua. The two clubs have agreed not to disclose details of the transfer.

Junior Fernandes has made four full international appearances for Chile and he will wear the number seven shirt for the Werkself. Fernandes is versatile and he particularly impressed the scouts with his dynamism and power. Fernandes was third-highest scorer in the Copa Libertadores with six goals behind the Brazilian Neymar (8). He netted eight goals in the first half of the current Chilean league campaign.

Junior Fernandes was our key target to fill the vacant position in attack left with the departure of Eren Derdiyok. We’re happy to have succeeded in bringing in this outstandingly talented player and we’re also convinced this transfer has increased our competetive edge on the European stage,” declared Bayer 04 managing director Wolfgang Holzhäuser.

Sporting director Rudi Völler gained first hand experience of Fernandes’ qualities in South America before investing intensive efforts to wrest the star from the Chilean giants ‘La U’. “Junior Fernandes has everything a modern striker needs. He’s technically strong, tough, quick and composed in front of goal. We’re convinced he’ll make his mark in the Bundesliga,” said Völler.

Wayne Bridge - Brighton (loan)

Albion today signed left-back Wayne Bridge on a season-long loan deal from Premier League champions Manchester City.

The 31-year-old, who has over 30 England caps to his name, was one of Gus Poyet's main summer targets and the Albion boss is delighted to have agreed a deal with Bridge and City.

He told seagulls.co.uk, "It's difficult to say how I happy I am because it's not easy to get top-class players. I'm absolutely delighted to have Wayne with us. He's been one of the top three left-backs in this country for many years.

"There were a lot of things that had to come together to make it happen. Firstly, David Platt has been great at Manchester City and then Wayne and his agent have helped a lot too.

"It was not an easy one to secure, but this is what we want at this club. He's a quality player with lots of international experience.

"Wayne has played at the top of English football for a long time. We have all got to learn from him and I'm sure that he will have a very good season with us. It's going to be very nice to sit back and watch him on the pitch."

Bridge brings a wealth of top-flight and Champions League experience to the Seagulls squad after racking up over 400 senior appearances throughout his career to date - as well as 36 caps for England.

He graduated through Southampton's academy and became a regular in their first team before Chelsea signed him for a fee in the region of £7m during the summer of 2003.

During six years at Stamford Bridge, he won the Premier League in 2004/05 and a cup double in 2007 as the Blues clinched the FA and League cups.

He joined Manchester City for £12m in January 2009 and has made 58 appearances for City. During his time at the Etihad Stadium has also had loan spells at West ham United and Sunderland before signing at the Amex this afternoon.

Another lower league signing by Lambert

Matthew Lowton - Aston Villa (undisclosed fee, reportedly £3 million)

Matthew Lowton has spoken of his delight after completing a "dream move" to a "massive Premier League club" from League One playoff runners-up Sheffield United.

The 23-year-old Lowton has signed a four-year deal which will take him up to the end of the 2015-16 season at Villa.

He is the club's third signing of the transfer window, following the acquisition of Karim El Ahmadi and Brett Holman.

Villa boss Paul Lambert described Lowton as "a bright prospect with the potential to be a really good player for us."

Chesterfield-born Lowton is predominantly a right-back but has displayed his versatility in the past by operating in a number of roles across the back four and in midfield for the Blades.

He was an ever-present for Danny Wilson's team in 2011-12, playing in 52 matches in all competitions.

Lowton made 47 appearances in League One - including the playoffs - as United narrowly missed out on promotion with a penalty shootout defeat to Huddersfield in the play-off final.

He found the net six times during the league campaign.

"It's every boy's childhood dream to play in the Premier League and it was one of mine," Lowton said.

"This opportunity is fantastic and I thank the manager for giving it to me. Hopefully I can repay the faith that's he's shown in me and keep going at a higher level.

"Just from driving up to the training ground you can see the difference in the quality of things. The training ground looks spectacular and the pitches look phenomenal. It's a massive club in the Premier League with a big fan base and I'm looking forward to getting to work as soon as I can.

"I played the majority of last season at right back but I have played right midfield and central midfield as well. I think my main asset is going forward and my technical ability but obviously I'm going to try and add whatever the manager is after from me. These are exciting times for me and I can't wait to go out and start playing."

Lambert said: "Matthew is a really talented young player who brings a lot of things that can really benefit the club. He's a good player already and he's only young so he has the potential to be a really good player for us.

"He's hungry to succeed and to go further in the game, both of which are attributes that we want at this football club and that we are looking for.

"We won't put any pressure on him, we just want him to go out and enjoy playing. What he's done so far at Sheffield United has been great so hopefully we can progress him a bit and he'll do very well for us."

Lowton also spoke of his excitement at working with Lambert and with his new team-mates.

"It's fantastic to think I'll be playing under Paul Lambert. I was flattered when I heard the interest and, when speaking to him, he's helped me settle in nicely so far. Hopefully we can get on well and I can fight for my place and play a few games this season.

"As a League One player last season, Premier League players are what everyone looks up to. Seeing guys like Darren Bent and Gabby Agbonlahor and people like that is fantastic. Meeting players who have played international and Premier League football all their lives is amazing.

"You can sense the buzz around the place at the moment. The lads were all having a laugh and joke when I came in this morning and they've all been very welcoming which was very good of them. It's a new era with the new manager and a few new signings.

"The squad has already got some fantastic players, everybody knows them so hopefully we can all come together and have a successful season."

A product of Sheffield United's academy, Lowton progressed through the youth ranks before making his first team debut as a substitute against Cardiff in March 2010.

He had already gained experience of senior football during loan spells at non-league Sheffield FC and United's Hungarian partner side, Ferencvaros.

Lowton contributed to Ferencvaros winning promotion during the 2009-10 campaign before returning to Bramall Lane.

The following season, he featured 32 times for United and chipped in with four goals.
