Clyne - The New Steve Finnan?

I can remember that there was loads of bitching about Finnan in certain quarters back in the day that he wasn't attacking and dynamic enough. He was a very good defender, but I suppose there may have been something in that grumble about his game. He scored one goal in his entire LFC career, and I don't remember him as being prolific provider of goals either. I think I'm saying that Clyne can be better than Finnan for us. He has the tools to be a great defender, and to offer something going forward. He's already doubled Finnan's goal tally anyway.

Edit: If someone wants to tell Spider Neil there is a chance to talk up the merits of attacking FBs I think this is his moment!

I think Finnan got his share of assists for us.

Maybe he did Aidan, I don't remember any though, and I do remember consistent complaints about him that he got a nosebleed when he crossed the halfway line. Those may have been unfair, and as I say, I thought he was a very good player.

Are defenders that score goals more important than defenders that can actually defend properly?

It depends.

Sometimes an average defender who is great going forward is fine if the rest of the defence can cope with that. Sometimes you need someone that can defend only, and don't want them to contribute going forward. I don't think you can write a hard rule for it.

I definitely remember him setting up Crouch's first bicycle kick. Off the top of my head I remember him laying on goals for Kuyt and Torres too. I'm not sure how highly Rafa rated him. He signed Josemi in first season, the Jan fucking Kromkamp until getting a good one in Arbeloa.

He even signed Degen during Finnan's time! Which was Finnan's cue to say 'fuck this'.

Josemi. One of the select names in Liverpool history that, even if I only see it, or hear to, raises my anger levels by about 10%. Nowhere near levels of genuine dislike, which I reserve for the likes of Diouf and Balotelli, but just offensively shit footballers who never should have been allowed within 100 miles of Anfield.

cf Chris Kirkland.

Shit players don't make me angry, they just make me lol at how far we've come

The owen/nunez & 8m swap for example

Proper fucking lulz

I think given a bit of time, he'll get to Finnan's level.

Look at it this way. He's a huge improvement on Johnson, both defensively and going forward.

Don't think he's better going forward TBH, not yet anyway. Certainly a more reliable defender though, so far at any rate.

He's proved himself a decent defender alongside the clowns to the left of him, (jokers to the right...)

He needs to work on his attacking link up play as he can make the wrong decisions past the half way line, but all in all he's been a brilliant signing and I think he will only go onto get better and better. It was a great bit of business. The forum was unanimous at the time of the signing and it remains so to this point. That's rare.

The thing with Johnson was his his unpredictability in the last few years. Most of the time he was rubbish (certainly compared to his first couple of years with us) but every now and again he'd be superb for no apparent reason.
It made me think that a lot of the time he was just going through the motions. whilst he wasn't being challenged for a place in the team and getting good money.
Since he signed for Stoke every time I watch one of their games he's been pretty good.
