Nathaniel Clyne has been one of the few positives of our season.
It's like he's always been there, he doesn't break rocks, but he's dead steady and never lets us down (well very rarely) he's a decent defender, and not too shabby going forward either.
I was made up that he scored against Villa, he deserved that.

The new Finnan? I actually rate him more highly

Defensively - as solid. his major advantage is his pace.
Going forward - I don't think he's nearly as refined as Finnan was - he was a better crosser, and used the ball far more intelligently if memory serves me well.

Clyne has the potential to be better, but Finnan is still better allround.

Good player with lots of room for improvement, Finnan at his age was only really getting his professional career started at Notts County with experience and the right guidance he could reach the same level of consistency. For £12.5 million it could turn out a great bit of business in the long run with him and Flanagan pushing each other on.

It's funny, Clyne has all the attributes to be great going forward, he just looks a little brain dead when he actually tries anything. I think with some good guidance he can get a couple of goals a season like he did on Sunday.

Well, the new Finnan wouldn't be a bad place to start, given he was one of the best right-backs in the league for a while.

I think Clyne already is. Great signing.

He's got the potential. Solid in defence. I've said elsewhere he worries me with his decisions further up the field. If he can show a bit more intelligence he'll be very good.

Finnan was excellent for us for 4 or 5 years. Easily one of the top full backs in the league. If Clyne even comes close to that we'll be doing well.

Finnan struggled in his first season with us but from the second season onward was consistently excellent.
Clyne hasn't been as fantastic going forward as i'd hoped he'd be but there are some mitigating factors. We haven't really played with wingers so he doesn't always have much support on the flank and Moreno is always bombing forward so it's difficult for Clyne to attack as much as maybe he'd like to.
Having said that his crossing does need to improve as it's let him down so far.

No real problems with him defensively (maybe his height/heading ability which can be exploited by the opposition at times)

This. Good post.

Great summary, shame he isn't a bit taller because crosses have cost us over and over again.

He's been superb so far for me.

Not settling in period just a boos full back who can defend.

I remember Glen Johnson started brilliantly for us and after a great initial 18 months went downhill fast.

Hopefully it doesn't happen with Clyne because if he stays at the level he's at I'll be more than happy with him.

We just need to sort left back now.

Clyne is a great signing. The fact that he comes accross as good in our joke of a defense is a credit to how good of a defender he is. Finnan was a great defender but he had the advantage of playing with Carra and Sami.

Finnan was a great crosser from deep. Could cross with both his left and right foot. Benteke would have loved him. Clyne is not as good as a crosser but I think he is better at 1-2's around the opposition box. He will enjoy playing alongside Sturridge, Origi, Coutinho, Firmino.

Glenjo was never a good defender, but while he was good going forward it was OK to forgive his defensive frailties- When he was crap at either he was a liability - likeable enough lad though
That is where Clyne has the advantage over Glenjo he reads the game as a defender and you never lose that - barring serious injury he will around a long time methinks

The left back position is not a problem - three contenders there Flanno, Smith and Gomez , the latter I think will either revert back to his usual CB role or in a DM position.

Flanno hasn't had an injury free run in a long time and he's yet to prove he can make that spot his own (I have high hopes he will but still)
Gomez is a CB
Smith is still very young and unproven.
Moreno - waste of space.

Yep. I'd definitely go with this too. Very good defender who always seems to be in the right place defensively. Though I'm pretty disappointed in his attacking play so far .. he doesn't seem capable of putting in a good cross, definitely needs coaching in that regard. Not fit to lace Finnan's boots .. yet.

Smith isn't very young - he's 22 in April, he has proved he can play already, but not the chance to show he can do it on a consistent basis, but I'm sure he would - with all those options at left back, I don't see it as a priority and doubt if the club will be spunking £15 on getting someone in , we have much more pressing areas to spend money on

Good call. I was made up when we signed him because he's a genuine improvement to the first team.

He's solid and dependable. Just want you want from a full back. He's definitely one of the success stories for me this year, and doesn't get the recognition he deserves, especially as he plays alongside virtually a different CB every week.

He's already a very good rb, but add some decent delivery or ingenuity in the final third and he could be ace

Agreed, and I'm confident Clyne can do that, because at both Palace and Southamption he had no trouble balancing his defensive duties and his natural incl👍nation to get forward. I reckon he got firmly told to play it safe as Rodgers struggled to plug our defensive gaps, and it messed with his head a bit. He'll be fine.

I can remember that there was loads of bitching about Finnan in certain quarters back in the day that he wasn't attacking and dynamic enough. He was a very good defender, but I suppose there may have been something in that grumble about his game. He scored one goal in his entire LFC career, and I don't remember him as being prolific provider of goals either. I think I'm saying that Clyne can be better than Finnan for us. He has the tools to be a great defender, and to offer something going forward. He's already doubled Finnan's goal tally anyway.

Edit: If someone wants to tell Spider Neil there is a chance to talk up the merits of attacking FBs I think this is his moment!

Absolutely not, as I think I said in my post. However, it is true that having fbs that can attack is obviously a bonus, and perhaps having at least one who can do so is quite important. It isn't even just a quality of the modern game, Liverpool have historically had fbs who can attack, like Nichol, Kennedy, Crazy Horse and McAteer. First and foremost they should be able to defend, but being able to support the attack will be part of the best fbs repertoire.
