I don't think it comes from a place of fiscal responsibility. He wants to keep the squad happy and motivated. An experienced player who only expects to play a handful of games is just not going to be healthy member of the squad. He would rather fill that emergency role with kids and it has paid off for him. They all have a reason to work like mad and young players have a reason to sign on. It helps with the friendly competition that exists throughout the squad.

I think Hoever is ahead of VdB.
He said in an interview when he first arrived that throwing money at a problem is not always the solution. Soon as reporters ask about transfers, his tone changes especially in Jan, and his scolded about the "buy, buy" culture in England

I don't disagree with that... But we have soooo many midfielders and so few first team defenders. Can we not sign a defender next?

I'm willing to put Lovren on the auction block to partially fund it.

Getting rid of one of out better defenders this season when we have a lack of defenders doesn't help us. Lovren stay till summer at least.

Maybe Klopp will like the look of Caio or somebody against Flamengo on Saturday and offer a quick switch in January as 4th choice CB...

Some laughed at how many points city have dropped with Laporte out. Yesterday was a timely reminder of crucial vvd is to our team. There were moments yesterday which gave me flashbacks to the pre vvd days.

Yes, and no. VVD is hugely important player for us, but yesterday showed what happens when you need to use several player totally out of position due to a series of injuries. Lallana as a 6 in front of Henderson playing CB? If it was Henderson in front of our 3rd and 4th cb, we'd be ok. If it was Firmino in front of Henderson and Gomez, we'd be ok.

Gomez who looked so assured with vvd, the other day then looks so ropey against a championship team. Vvd is the rolls Royce. The rest of them are a combination of a Skoda, Vauxhall. We do need some cover for cb in January with fab out too.

Realistically, who do you seriously think we are going to buy?

What other team have more than 4 centre backs of the currently have? I would say no one so we are not going to go and buy another one and who would even come in January.

We have a couple of injuries as we did last year but that is why you have a squad and a youth set up. It is not ideal if you have to use so called untested players for the odd game but we have to adapt and cope as all top teams do.

Yeah it was welcome back 2015 yesterday without VVD. Teams start confidently throwing in high balls and we look sooo shaky.

I agree this is the tough one.... Who can we buy without spending big bucks? Unless we look at decent cheaper guys in the championship but is it wise to play those championship level players in the premiership at this crucial stage.

At the same time it would be a big failure on our part not to have a plan just in case VVD gets injured. We all know VVD could get injured along with our regular center back injuries. Tyrone Mings is my favorite of the month but he would cost 40m probably

People shouldn't forget Nat Phillips, who is on loan at VfB Stuttgart. He's a very good young CB, he's on loan not as a means to sell him but because he's rated and he's there to gain experience. It's a pity we can't call him back, but he's a good prospect.

Easy this

Sell Lovren.. his wages are 120k a week

Buy Conor Coady, probably cost 25 to 30 million with 3 years left on his contrct. job done.. Stick on what 70 - 80k wages a week, currently on just under 50k week

He is only 25 no where near his prime yet.. cracking player for wolves and leader to boot..

Was looking him up yesterday to see how much he’s playing in Stuttgart. I think he has the physicality to become a PL CB. I wonder if we’d try and convince Stuttgart to let us have him back just for a month whilst we are depleted.

I had completely forgotten about him. He’s looked good in a the few games I’ve seen him.

Don't think they will sell their captain for 25-30M - more like minimum of 40M -and that will be their starting point.

And still Edwards get all the praise when assembling a winning squad on a tight budget is so easy.

Coady isn't good enough.

Coady isn't good enough.
Yes, I agree with this. He's a very sound PL defender, and would be solid back up, but no more than that. Which is a shame, because his heart is obviously red as can be.

Like you said he's red to the bone. A former youth player and all that. Maybe he'll get his dream move back one day but he'd at best be the fourth choice at the club.
While we're at it we could sign Cresswell too but it's just not realistic.

Coady isn't good enough.

And he has excelled in a three back line as the ball playing centre.
He wont fit us and he isnt good enough.

Happy for him that he’s made a great PL career for himself mind.

Looks like we won't be signing any player as defensive cover.

[article]Liverpool have recalled youngster Nat Phillips from his loan spell at Stuttgart as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his defensive options for the second half of the campaign.

The English centre back, 22, joined the German club on loan last summer but Klopp has seen fit to bring him back to Melwood.

Klopp has a settled defensive pairing in Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, but injuries to Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren has led the German to ensure he has ample cover in that area.

The 22-year-old joined the Reds in 2016 after spending time training with Huddersfield. He had planned to move to the United States after securing a scholarship with the University of North Carolina, before a change of heart resulted in a switch to Anfield.

Since then, the towering centre half has come on leaps and bounds under the tuition of the club's academy staff at Melwood.

Phillips was sidelined for much of the 2017-18 campaign with a long-term back injury, but on his return was handed the captain's armband for the Under 23 side.

The defender caught the eye of Klopp during pre-season training in 2018-19, but hit another injury setback, with an ankle problem stumping his bid to break into the first team.

However, a run of games in Germany has led Klopp to put his faith in the youngster. Phillips has made nine league appearances for Stuttgart, and 11 in all competitions.

He was also part of the Champions League celebrations last season, having been an unused member of the squad as Liverpool triumphed in Madrid.

Phillips is the son of former Bolton and Middlesbrough defender Jimmy Phillips, who is currently academy director at the Trotters. [/article]
