Looks like we won't be signing any player as defensive cover.
[article]Liverpool have recalled youngster Nat Phillips from his loan spell at Stuttgart as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his defensive options for the second half of the campaign.
The English centre back, 22, joined the German club on loan last summer but Klopp has seen fit to bring him back to Melwood.
Klopp has a settled defensive pairing in Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, but injuries to Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren has led the German to ensure he has ample cover in that area.
The 22-year-old joined the Reds in 2016 after spending time training with Huddersfield. He had planned to move to the United States after securing a scholarship with the University of North Carolina, before a change of heart resulted in a switch to Anfield.
Since then, the towering centre half has come on leaps and bounds under the tuition of the club's academy staff at Melwood.
Phillips was sidelined for much of the 2017-18 campaign with a long-term back injury, but on his return was handed the captain's armband for the Under 23 side.
The defender caught the eye of Klopp during pre-season training in 2018-19, but hit another injury setback, with an ankle problem stumping his bid to break into the first team.
However, a run of games in Germany has led Klopp to put his faith in the youngster. Phillips has made nine league appearances for Stuttgart, and 11 in all competitions.
He was also part of the Champions League celebrations last season, having been an unused member of the squad as Liverpool triumphed in Madrid.
Phillips is the son of former Bolton and Middlesbrough defender Jimmy Phillips, who is currently academy director at the Trotters. [/article]
