Roy Hodgson fears Jamie Carragher dislocated his shoulder during Sunday's 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool's No.23 will have the injury further assessed at Melwood on Monday.

"We think Jamie has disclocated his shoulder which is a real blow for us and for him," Hodgson told his post-match press conference.

"I don't know at this stage how long Jamie will be out for but I would think it will be quite long because it's a serious injury.

"It is a blow for us. Agger is still out injured and we are not really that well blessed for centre-halves.

"We are now without Steven Gerrard and Jamie for a period of time - both of whom are the lifeblood of this club."

Thankfully Kyrgiakos is not a complete mug. I guess it's possible that Kelly and Wilson get some playing time as well, which can only be a good thing for them.

Kuyt or Reina for captain?

Kuyt will get it I think. Just so long as it's not Lucas again.

Losing Carra is a blow...agreed.

But does he really have to play it up like that to get others to sympathise with him and prepare them for possible poor results in the future?

We have got the Greek, Kelly and Wilson...two full internationals in that. Center back is the one osition, where we are actally well blessed.

I'm tired of this loser's negative thinking...

Nasty injury - time out will depend if there are any complications with the dislocation. My experience is that it could easily be upto 12 weeks, but as said depends on any complications. It'll keep the physios busy.

We could do a lot worse than see what Wilson is made of during his time out

or kelly. they're both right at the cusp of being ready, you'd have thought - all that's really left is to give them a run and let them sink or swim. it's unlikely either of them are going to get any more 'ready' without actually playing matches.

he who dares, rodders.

On a sidenote, I thought Carra was ace today. That full-body block on Defoe's shot, and the way he was screaming at the Greek for not being ready, despite the fact that his arm was hanging out of its socket, were welcome reminders of the Carra of Istanbul.

We'll miss him, no matter how potentially good our young replacements are. (And you know it'll be Greek and Skrtel anyway.)

That bit was fantastic.

A few people have gotten their wish then. Lets see exactly how much of a problem he is to the way we play.

Will be a massive loss, no doubt about that.

If Roy doesn't start Wilson in the Europa League on thursday he needs his head examined.
It will be the Greek and Skrtel against Villa though.

As has been said, a lot of people have been dying for Carra not to be in the side, so now we shall see how well we cope without him.

It would be nice if Wilson or Kelly were given a chance. I rather suspect it wont happen though.

Theres a chance gerrard maybe back for the villa game, he started running last week.

Its a fact that we do have to see who can step in for Carra, we will just find out sooner rather than later, if anyone can attempt to fill his boots.

It could be a blessing, knowing that we can rest him, for weaker games, if Kelly or Wilson can step up.

Which I am sure then can, Kelly for sure because thats his position of choice, and he's done really well so far playing either LB or RB.

is agger fit? despite his argument with roy is he who should be in there?

edit-

Take that back did not know agger was out! Yeah time for wilson to step up and fill some of the gap!

Jamie Carragher will discover today whether he requires surgery on the shoulder injury that threatens to deprive Roy Hodgson of the influential Liverpool defender until at least mid-January.

Liverpool's vice-captain dislocated his left shoulder five minutes from the end of the defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday after landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge with Peter Crouch. Initial estimates put the 32-year-old's recovery period at six weeks but, despite undergoing a scan on Merseyside yesterday, Liverpool's medical department has yet to decide whether to book the defender in for an operation that could prolong his absence. A decision is expected after further consultations today.

With Daniel Agger out for at least another two weeks with a calf injury and Steven Gerrard sidelined with a hamstring tear suffered on England duty, the loss of Carragher is another untimely setback for Hodgson. Gerrard, however, is making good progress in his recovery and has a slight chance of returning 10 days ahead of schedule when Gérard Houllier returns to Anfield with Aston Villa on Monday night.

Martin Kelly, meanwhile, is expected to sign a new three-and-a-half?year contract this week. The 20-year-old defender has made 10 first?team appearances this season but, with his deal due to expire at the end of the campaign, Liverpool are keen to reward his breakthrough with a contract that ties him to Anfield until 2014.

LIVERPOOL fear Jamie Carragher could be out of action for up to three months.

Carragher dislocated his left shoulder late in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday.

Initially, it was estimated the influential centre-half would be sidelined for around six weeks.

But, following a scan yesterday, a specialist recommended that the Liverpool vice-captain should undergo surgery.

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson will decide today whether to put the 32-year-old under the knife after speaking to Carragher.

Carragher is desperate to avoid a lengthy absence, especially with clashes against Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup and Everton in the Premier League looming in January.

Worried Hodgson’s defensive resources are already threadbare, with Daniel Agger out indefi nitely with a calf injury, leaving Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Martin Skrtel as Liverpool’s only recognised centre-halves.

Hodgson has personally checked on Lille centre-back Adil Rami, 24, who played in France’s victory over England earlier this month, while Bolton’s £15m-rated Gary Cahill could be another target.

Carragher missed 23 matches when he broke his leg in September 2003, but since the start of the 2004-05 campaign he has missed just nine Premier League games and his absence will be keenly felt by a Liverpool side already lacking in leaders.

2 months seems to be the general concencuss among the journos in the know.

I'm guessing Roy will buy a centre back in january. Links with Hangeland and Shawcross will appear quite reguarly I would imagine.

I would be devastated if we bought a Center Back in January.

We have Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Agger, Carra, Kelly and Wilson on our books. Buying a CB is the very definition of a panic purchase. This is exactly why we have a squad of 25 players. Lets use it. Carra is out for 3months at worst, and he would have crossed the worst part of that before the transfer window opens. Agger surely should also be back soon?

If we buy a defender, i hope it is a Left Back.

LB, DM and a Striker. A winger too, if it isn't too much to ask.

It's not the definition of a panic purchase, we're struggling big time, haven't been defending well and have just lost our best defender for anything up to 3 months. Soto has done ok, but showed on Sunday how rash and indecisive he can be (he got caught under the ball three or four times, one of which cost us for the goal), while Kelly has never even played a League Cup game at centre back and Wilson is untried too. We need a big commanding figure at the back and I won't complain if we make a move in January.

It's not even worth including Agger because he's fucked and reportedly on his way out anyway. So that's our best defender out, Skrtel being hit and miss, Soto ok as a stop gap but hit and miss too, and two inexperienced youngsters.

I'd sell Soto and buy a new commanding centre back. Either Hangeland or Shawcross would do.

Then we'd have Skrtel, Agger, new CB, Kelly, Wilson and Carra.

It will be decided to today if Carra has surgery, if he doesn't he'll be back in about a month, if he has surgery he'll be out for up to 3 months.

If we buy a new cb in january, will Carra struggle to get back into the first team? I actually think so, if we're doing alright that is.

I tend to agree with kingjulian on this one. We do need a commanding CB, but in January? Let's face it: this season is pretty much a write-off. We're not going to finish top 4 and we're not going to get relegated. The Europa League is our only realistic chance of winning anything. We may as well use Carra's absence to blood our promising young defenders. If we buy someone now, how will we ever find out if Wilson is good enough, or if Kelly can reproduce his full-back form in the centre? It's a transitional season: we may as well use it move forward in some meaningful way. Wait till the summer, then decide who of Agger/Skrtel/Greek we want to sell in order to bring in the next Sami.
