LIVERPOOL fear Jamie Carragher could be out of action for up to three months.
Carragher dislocated his left shoulder late in the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday.
Initially, it was estimated the influential centre-half would be sidelined for around six weeks.
But, following a scan yesterday, a specialist recommended that the Liverpool vice-captain should undergo surgery.
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson will decide today whether to put the 32-year-old under the knife after speaking to Carragher.
Carragher is desperate to avoid a lengthy absence, especially with clashes against Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup and Everton in the Premier League looming in January.
Worried Hodgson’s defensive resources are already threadbare, with Daniel Agger out indefi nitely with a calf injury, leaving Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Martin Skrtel as Liverpool’s only recognised centre-halves.
Hodgson has personally checked on Lille centre-back Adil Rami, 24, who played in France’s victory over England earlier this month, while Bolton’s £15m-rated Gary Cahill could be another target.
Carragher missed 23 matches when he broke his leg in September 2003, but since the start of the 2004-05 campaign he has missed just nine Premier League games and his absence will be keenly felt by a Liverpool side already lacking in leaders.
