Brazil v Argentina

I worry that when articles start popping up in papers about Barca/Real/Bayern etc are going to buy player X it means that player X is wanting to move and his agent is putting it out there.
It was only after Gerrard retires that it was revealed that there had been enquires made for him (unsurprisingly I suppose) by many of the continents elite teams in the 08-11 period only to be rebuffed by the player himself. I don't recall any of this being reported or even speculated on in the sports media at the time.
No smoke without fire I fear.

Real and Barca don't require agents to let them know if a player wants a move. They usually simply use existing players, or their pet newspaper (Marca or whatever), to start mentioning their names, and start signalling their interest first. That usually draws out the agent and player.

Woland was always bringing up Coutinho's agent in the past. As in how did that agent let Phil sign a contract for 40k a week a few years back. Surely we gave him an improved one? What is he on now?

Yep, Iniesta even went to the papers to say Alex Song could fit into the Barca team. What a bizarre transfer that was.

There's been some really weird transfers, but that's a contender. Although Gravesen to Real still beats it.

I think he's signed one improved one since we signed him, but still think it's a good bit below Studge and even Henderson. New contract on big bucks. 100 million buyout clause.

I would definitely be against selling him for almost any price. You lose a huge part of what Klopp is building, other teams jack up their prices and it could take new player(s) a good while to bed in, disrupting our progress.

Yeah he's on £80,000, which puts him in the second tier of players. We should put him on the top wage bracket. His agent isn't as grasping as he should be by the look of things.

As I always say about our best player; DO NOT SELL.
It's never our choice, if a player wants to leave badly enough there is no point in delaying matters. The longer you keep the player the worse their performances will get and the more distracted the squad become. We did well to hang onto Suarez for that extra season and who knows we might be able to swing another deal like that.

We can't compete financially with City, Chelsea or United and we can't compete with Barca/Madrid because "everyone" seems to want to play for those 2. We are very lucky that we have a manger who knows how to mitigate this situation. He lost his star player every season at Dortmund, Kagawa, Sahin, Goetze, Lewandowski etc. He replaced Kagawa with Reus, replaced Goetze with Mykterian (sp), Lewandowski with Aubamayang and Sahin with Perisic.........and pocketed a tidy profit whilst at it.

I see no problem with us selling Coutinho (as long as it's for £80m+) as I trust Klopp to find us a more-than decent replacement.

We should offer him better terms than he is on now and trust that thw Klopp effect gives him so much fun on the pitch that he choose to stay.

I do get that but I still can't help feel that there is usually a level of complicity from the the player and their agent.
Maybe it's simply that the likes of Barca/Real always get the players they want and simply by using their mouth pieces in the media to express an interest is enough to turn the head of the targeted player.
Though like I said, I seem to recall it mentioned when Gerrard retired that Real had made inquiries about his availability yet I dont think Marca reported it at the time

The papers said he signed for 70k a week last year. Mad enough in its own context but Phil Jones had just negotiated 120 off Man U at the same time.

Coutinho hasnt agitated for a move and seems very settled.
A new contract and success on the pitch could keep him for a while yet.

Barca have got both Denis Suarez and Andre Gomes in midfield re Iniesta.

Coutinho wont get in the team with the front 3 they currently have and as Ballbag said this week Barca arent interested at the moment but that could obviously change if they scrap Turan etc.

I'm not to worried yet as I doubt they can afford him at the moment anyway.

At some stage he'll be gone mind.

Champions League and a fat contract in the summer (which he deserves) might keep him for an extra season, prolonged success in the champions league is the only way we can be sure to keep him in the long term.

Coutinho has always had a load of ability, he was missing the consistency. The consistency has been there now for the last six months or so, I'm delighted for him and delighted that he's establishing himself internationally too.

I wouldn't want him to go, but I'm not going to worry about that - I want him to be at his absolute best while he is here.

I don't think Coutinho's situation is quite as cut and dried as some seem to see it. He left Brazil early for one of the big clubs (Inter) and failed to establish himself there. We gave him that chance and he has grown into the player he is now under Rodgers and Klopp. Under the latter we now have a genuine chance of silverware (two finals in the last six months), while the club has worked pretty hard at clearing out the deadwood leaving room in the budget to improve Coutinho's contract to the level he deserves. Add to that that he seems to have a good relationship with Firmino and I think that we might find leaving is not such an easy decision for him.

I hope...

He has a genuine chance of silverware here. He is guaranteed silverware at Barca as long as Messi is playing. Most players will chose the later.

Your point about failing at Inter is well taken. Maybe he will not be as eager to jump to a Barca type setup because of his Inter experience.

One thing we could hopefully use is that Klopp appears to have some kind of vodoo curse over players who leave him. Gotze, Kagawa, Sahin, Barrios - everyone who left him appears to have performed worse than under him. Lewandowski is the only player who bucked that trend and even he did not hit his Dortmund heights in his first season at Bayern.

How long is actually left on his current contract? Just get another 4 years on it and a bigger buyout asap.

Take your point, Peekay, but a genuine chance is a big improvement in circumstances over last season. Don't underestimate what the feelgood factor might do for his loyalty.

Who'd have thought De Gea would still be at Man Utd - a salary increase and a change in management has kept him there and his club are in a bit mess playing-wise right now.

{td}Philippe Coutinho does not have an escape clause in his contract, ensuring Liverpool are in a powerful position to retain their influential playmaker next summer despite purported interest from Barcelona.

The absence of a buy-out figure leaves Liverpool holding the aces and the club’s resolve to keep the talented Coutinho, whose current deal does not expire until 2020, would be strong in the event of interest from Europe’s elite being firmed up.{/td}

He is in incredible form right now, the manager stuck him on the right to accommodate Neymar and Phil still stole the show. Klopp's influence is also showing even when he plays for the national team - whenever the ball is lost he switches into the pressing mode on the autopilot. To show this kind of performance against Messi and Argentina is certainly a big statement - Coutinho has arrived.

ZERO HORA:

In a discussion Coutinho replied to Marcelo question if he'd like to join Real one day: "Klopp gives me confidence, I feel home"

So, maybe he'll stay for a while yet..

He also spoke in a recent interview together with Firmino about feeling very comfortable in Liverpool and that the way local people are ("caring and humble") reminds him of Brazilians. And one of them said (about their partnership) something like "it's a start of a long story together." So FWIW it's seems that right now Phil's focus is very much on trying to win trophies with Liverpool.

This was a perfect performance by Coutinho! Absolutely perfect!

And BTW - what a miss by Firmino near the end...

Footballers are known for their honesty when it comes to these things... If Barca come calling in the summer, he'll be gone.

I think people are more inclined to believe it because it is the tweet of a private conversation he has with a fellow professional rather than a statement to the media.
That said I wouldn't be surprised if his head is turned by Barca/Real etc
