Borrell and McParland sacked?

Borrell wanted a DoF position though didnt he?

For once I agree with Ross, well partially at least.
They've transformed the acadamy but since then its been pretty quiet. We dont know how well its working or the reasoning behind them getting sacked.
The club has done the right thing for a while now and I'll wait for the statement before saying its an awful desicion or not.
Maybe we need someone else to step in and evolve the acadamy further.

I like both of them though but sentiment doesnt win you anything.

It's a mystery to me. Borrell's been particularly highly regarded by most. Then again, we've got some other high achieving youth staff (Inglethorpe etc) on the up.

Maybe the club got wind he's looking to move on and want to protect their plans/other staff from prying eyes?

Senior figures both dismissed in shock move

Liverpool FC have sacked Academy director Frank McParland and Academy technical director Rodolfo Borrell.

The ECHO understands the duo were both informed of the club's decision to relieve them of their duties yesterday.

The departure of two such highly-respected and established figures from Liverpool's Kirkby base represents a major shock.

Both McParland and Borrell had earned praise for helping to kick-start the conveyor belt of talent from Kirkby to Melwood in recent years.

No fewer than seven Academy youngsters made their first team debuts last season with Jordon Ibe following in the footsteps of Suso, Andre Wisdom, Adam Morgan, Samed Yesil, Jerome Sinclair and Conor Coady.

The likes of Martin Kelly, Raheem Sterling, Jon Flanagan and Jack Robinson have also progressed to the senior set-up under their guidance.

McParland, who had previously served Liverpool as chief scout, was appointed Academy director by Rafa Benitez in the summer of 2009. Two years later he was given the added responsibility of overseeing the running of the reserve team.

Borrell also arrived at Kirkby in 2009 as he began working with the under-18s and then the under-21s before taking up the role of technical director a year ago.

The popular Spaniard boasted an impressive CV having spent 13 years with La Liga giants Barcelona where he helped develop the likes of Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas.

Liverpool FC today declined to comment on the sackings and it's not yet clear whether replacements have already been lined up.[/article]

Maybe we got some hotshot replacements coming in, hence the sacking. We certainly show no mercy nowadays.

Zep is extremely negative and if results aren't immediate, it's failure. Nice explanation mind!

yeah whatever chap , negative or realistic? i'm just not some super fan who buries their head in the sand .

And i'm well aware of how a youth academy works . Everyone has this idealistic view on how a football club should be run and high on that list is that you must have a great youth setup . And i too would love it to be that way but more often than not the big clubs just buy players unless the youth player is something very special.

I don't get the impression we're getting rid because we've got better lined up.

But I doubt we'll hear why they got the boot

Nope.

But Borrell and McParland massively improved on the reserve league winning team in 2010, since then the reserves have won ...... ? Nothing ?

The fan perception about the academy is all over the fucking place - under Houllier it ran into the ground, yet in 06 and 07 we won trophies, now we have these miracle workers not able to produce any results ?

I'm totally confused.

Winning trophies isn't the main objective- it is streaming the best players from the academy to Melwood, or to a level were they are knocking on the door. This is something that has been emphasised in the new regime. In that regard, we are seeing an unparalleled period of success. The last time we won the youth cup, hardly any of the players made the grade in the first team, or looked like doing so- I think Jay Spearing was the most successful in that regard. We now have a flood of players on the fringe of doing so, or who are impressing in loan deals. We've never had it so good.

Sterling, Suso, ibe, wisdom, sinclair

All highly thought of

All worked with borrell

All made first team appearances and didn't look overwhelmed.

I'd say he's been doing alright zep

My spider sense is telling me Inglethorpe is involved. He's a steely looking fucker.

Interesting. I guess we'll get more details soon enough.

I can see Ross' point about not knowing what goes on behind closed doors and not really being able to evaluate the progress we're making. That said, one or two (well Macca) seem to have a bit of an inside track and have been complimentary with regards to Borrell at least.

Very weird. I was under the impression that Borrell was great great and had sorted out the youth team, even though we've not really seen any amazing players come through, just a few that could 'do a job'. We've not really seen any Fowler's or Gerrard's or Owen's.

I've no idea how important the youth setup is in respect to, does it matter if we sack 2 'directors'? Directors are usually useless fuckers in companies and don't do the real work. Would it be more serious if we lost some good coaches?

No idea if this is a disaster or a meh. I think, due to the lack of anything amazing coming out the reserves/youth and the fact they were sacked, is that it's more of being a meh.

It's very odd. FSG seemed intent on avoiding letting the manager call all the shots, then Rodgers came in and refused a DoF, then gradually replaced the youth and ressie coaches (no criticism, he replaced them well). McParland and Borrell were the only ones left in key positions that weren't his men, and Borrell was the only one who had a greater claim to the whole Barca tradition of coaching and style of play. Just seems quite odd. Once Borrell took over from Segura there did seem a bit of an overlap between him and McParland but the club was incredibly lucky to have him - he completely bought into the club and worked 24/7 for it.

Rumoured on twitter that Borrell's heading to City to hook up with Txixi (with whom he retains strong links from Barca days).

News doing the rounds that some American kid who painted the toilet doors at Melwood on placement during the summer is the replacement.

I wonder what this means with regards to keeping some of our Spanish youngsters who I imagine came under the influence of Borrell.

Thursday 21 November 2013

Youth players at Liverpool were today stunned to be told that Academy head coach Rodolfo Borrell has been sacked, along with director Frank McParland, in what appears to be a strengthening of Brendan Rodgers’ position at the club.

Borrell, who was appointed in 2009 towards the Rafael Benitez era, is held in huge esteem by the Academy players, many of whom consider him to be a supremely good coach. McParland was also respected within the Kirkby training base as the individual who would enforce discipline when required.

But the two men’s departures after four years at the club, seems to have stemmed from their doubts about some aspects of the academy’s future direction, as it develops under Rodgers. Rodgers has influenced appointments to the Academy in the past six months, with Neil Critchley arriving from Crewe Alexandra to run the under-18s, after Steve Cooper’s contract was not renewed at the end of last season.

The deepening sense of division about the future direction led Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre to call McParland and Borrell into his office yesterday and tell them they were to be dismissed. The vacuum the decision creates potentially delivers more control to Rodgers’ to shape the culture and personnel of the Academy, which delivered no fewer than seven youngsters to their first team debuts last season. But that raises the question of how much control the manager actually ought to have over that side of the club.

Benitez famously sought to assume control of the academy, amid his own frustrations about its capacity to deliver first team players. But handing that type of control to the manager creates a problem about continuity if he then leaves. Rodgers’ was unwilling to take on the Liverpool job under a director of football, whose role would have been to provide a bridge between first team and Academy.

Benitez ascribes huge value to the coaching role Borrell has played at Kirkby and is also a huge enthusiast for McParland, who has remained in contact with the Spaniard since his departure from Anfield. Andre Wisdom, one of those who graduated from the Academy to the first team last season, told The Independent last season that Borrell was his mentor and that the Spaniard’s low profile belied his huge role. He exhorted Wisdom, Conor Coady, Suso, Raheem Sterling and others to move the ball fast when they could, but to play a different, more physical way when required. Borrell was the one who "turned me from a boy to a man", Wisdom said.

The latest departures are the latest in a history of internal strife concerning the Academy. Benitez and Gerard Houllier were both at odds with former director Steve Heighway, concerning who should have control over youth football at the club. Heighway left in 2007.

there's still that debate on how much control the manager should have over all aspects of the club . Logic would dictate he calls the shots but do you want to keep things like the academy separate so that when/if the manager moves on it doesn't disrupt things here also ? . I guess the more european model of Managers (director of football) and coaches gets around this . But as we all know that doesn't work in Britain .

😱 what was the need to do it right now in the middle of the season, I know it wont affect much the first team results but FSG are wither having some ballz to do it or they have completely lost the plot there

I'll be very disappointed if it's largely come about as a result of political maneuvering by Rodgers.
Well, if it's control for controls sake rather than the belief that Borrell isn't getting as much as he can out of the Academy.

Neil Critchley was joint Academy Director at Crewe at the age of 28, since 2007. 10 years of coaching experience and 6 as a academy director.

What's the chances of him being handed the role via a spell on a temporary basis? "He was handpicked by the FA to take UEFA's first Elite badge course, making him one of only 16 coaches in the country – including Crewe's under-16s coach Michael Jolley and Academy Chief James Collins to gain the highest qualification in the game."

What irony as I was just browsing through "Pep Guardiola: Another Way of Winning" by Guillem Balague earlier today and read this:

[article]Guardiola had a lot to transmit to his players, but he was still humble. And knew that defensive work wasn’t his strong side, so when needed he would take help. Juanma Lillo saw all the games of Barça B team that season and directly after each game Guardiola would call him for advice. Each week Pep would also go to the defensive training session set up by Rodolf Borrell (now at Liverpool) who coached one of the clubs youth teams. Pep went there to observe and learn.[/article]

Critchley's very good. He seems to be incredibly insecure at the moment - he starts off most interviews by saying 'I might not have been a famous player, I might not have a room full of trophies and medals, I might not be well-known, etc etc'. Hopefully he'll relax soon enough and just get on with doing the good job he's clearly able to do.

Maybe Borrell and McParland used more than a few words from the list of 'unacceptable' words, while addressing Ian Ayre during the meeting....despite being warned repetitively.
