George Gillett's sale of his hockey team has been ratified by the NHL and he is now set to receive something in the region of £570M (possibly dollars - heard it on the radio half asleep)

Fingers crossed the deal doesn't get iced.

Or the buyer doesn't get cold feet.

Here in Dallas, it also appears that the sale of the Rangers is quietly becoming more likely to occur in the not-too-distant future according to normally reliable sources...

So, does this mean they are going or staying?
The fact that they seem to be looking for a minority stakeholder to come in suggests that they are planning to stay, but with all these wads of cash they now have, why are they looking to bring in a new investor.

??? ???

They have wads of cash to pay back the loans that they took out to buy those clubs in the first place perhaps...

didn't he already say that LFC would be getting sweet fuck all out of this deal a few months back?

But wasn't there also reference to our debt being reduced to £100M "soon" ?

We can only benefit from the deal.

Even if we don't see any of the cash directly, it will be reassuring to RBS that we should always have a means of payment.

This is true, assuming of course that he actually gets to pocket that money as opposed to pay back an enormous loan.

You are right though cynicism against the evil low life aside it can only be good for us.

update from Texas Rangers blog I follow:

That's what Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated wrote Wednesday. He said Dennis Gilbert, the former agent, has the leading bid at this point.

The article says that several people familar with the talks say that no deal has been finalized, but that the winning bid will be "north of $500 million."

Owner Tom Hicks 10 days ago that he was taking bids and submitting one himself. He said the process would play out from there, but the plan was to have a new owner in place by the end of the year. Hicks was trying to put together his own group of local investors to keep the team.

From the Guardian...

Liverpool's co-owner George Gillett, meanwhile, has banked a $300m [£180m] profit from the sale of his Montreal Canadiens ice hockey franchise, which has now been approved by the National Hockey League. Gillett's windfall, however, is not expected to see him gain majority control of Liverpool or improve Benítez's budget for the January transfer window.

The businessman decided to sell his ice hockey franchise last year to ease pressure on his diverse range of interests and, despite enduring a fractured relationship with his Anfield co-owner Tom Hicks, the pair are under instruction from the Royal Bank of Scotland to attract third-party investors to Liverpool and reduce the club's debt.

Hicks and Gillett are continuing to search for new investors willing to meet their asking price of £100m for a 25% stake in Liverpool, with the former also seeking investors in his Dallas Stars NHL franchise.
