I thought a squib was an explosive used for cannons?
I've always known it as a kind of mini-firecracker, but I just googled it and apparently it can also carry a more general meaning of a small explosive charge used for various purposes, including the cannon one.
yeah, my dad told me when I was young this was where the phrase orignated, on ships of war as a 'damp quib' would lead to a misfire. Apparently 'brass monkeys' also comes form the use of cannons on ships, but cant remember why.

damp squid again
Er, that's "damp squib", my friend (it's a type of firework).

All squid are damp. They live in the sea. 😉
LOL, no wonder it doesn't gel as I typed. Too wet! hahaha

Pointless but true: I've been watching 'Great Railway Journeys' on I-player recently because it's first episode was all about Liverpool (I actually saw it being filmed on Bold St) and last nights episode was all about Manchester. Apparently the phrase mad as a hatter' comes from hat workers on the edge of Manchester developing Dementia because of the mercury used in the manufacturing process.

I'm not sure on the origins of "spineless cunt', though.

Now sure, they probably don't know him as well as we do, but it provides a bit of balance to the ever so slightly over the top "he's a fucking shithouse cunt" viewpoint.
I don't call him those things because he doesn't have the potential, Ken.
I know that he does, we all do. I call him those things because he takes no pride whatsoever in wearing the shirt. He doesn't give a flying fuck about the club or the team, only himself as his twitter page will testify. Fucking shit rap music and twitter, what a cunt.

Birmingham City's speculated pursuit of Ryan Babel gathered credence today (Wednesday) as the player's agent - Winny Haatrecht - confirmed that Liverpool gave serious thought to the previous bid lodged by the St Andrew's outfit, as reported by Goal.com Netherlands.

"Birmingham City's bid [for Ryan Babel] was taken seriously by Liverpool, but the clubs have not reached an agreement," Haatrecht is alleged to have said, before adding that Alex McLeish's Blues were not the only club interested in rescuing Babel from his bench role at the Reds.

"Five or six clubs are reported to have been interested by Liverpool."

Haatrecht, though, was keen to stress that his client remained eager to succeed at Anfield.

"In [a] general sense can I say that Ryan wants to succeed at Liverpool. He will remain at Anfield until the conclusion comes that it is better that he leaves, [only then] will we look into the next possible chapter."

According to reports in the British media, Birmingham offered £9 million for Babel.

Goal.com UK revealed earlier in the week that McLeish was not averse to signing a "marquee" player, and would be backed by new owner Carson Yeung in the transfer market.

Why does the fact that he likes rap music and posts on Twitter bother you? Should he live in some sort of footballing bubble?

Footballers

hahaha.

I knew the mad as a hatter one too.

The phrase 'daft as a brush' comes from that as well, cos the hat makers had apprentices who swpet up, known as 'brushes' & they also went a bit squiffy due to the mercury.

The version I was told as a kid was that the "brass monkeys" were originally the containers in which cannonballs were kept. In cold weather they would slightly contract, at which point (if they were full) some of the cannonballs would fall off the edge. Even at that age I found this a disappointingly tame explanation, as it had nothing to do with bollocks of any kind.

Babel's too good to play for Birmingham
8th in the league with the prospect of strengthening heavily in January? That's not too shabby.

(Probably being whooshed)
Whoosh, indeed.

You know he's the delluded kinda fool who would think that.

I don't care where he goes, but like I said, I think he'd think he's too good to play for them.

I don't reckon Babel would go there. A pound to a penny says he'd consider them beneath him.
I agree mate. To be fair though i wouldn't blame him either.

If they offer a good wage he will consider it IMO especially if they offer 3+ years.

Maybe you're right:

Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Babel's agent Winnie Haatrecht said: "We know that Liverpool are seriously thinking about the offer from Birmingham. We would consider a deal if both clubs come to an agreement.

I watch more of Celtic than any of you (great claim that), and Aidan McGeady can get to fuck. Trust me.

Lawerence was excellent late in our campaign. Mcgeady always seemed to have trouble releasing the ball and getting his cross to beat the first man.

I don't watch Scottish football, is it much the same up there or is the stand out player? Petrov is an example of a player who has crossed over to the premiership and has looked decent, perhaps Mcgeady will too but I don't want us to take the risk.

Plus we see him for Ireland.
McGeady?

No chance.

I'd rather Kuyt I really would.

Still think selling Babel is a big mistake.

Yep,

Kuyt > Mcgeady

Petrov is a really good player thats why. McGeady is like Ronaldo, only without the goals, pace, and ability to beat players.
