Radio merseyside just reporting that we have turned down a 9 million bid for babbel.
woah .... if we cannot use the money to spend on players NOW, then i'd keep him as we don't really have any other back ups ...

If we cant't bring in a replacement we'd be fucking daft to sell him.

God, I hate our owners.

9 million, take it and settle some more debt. Only £241 million more to go, come on those Yanks.

To me that says Benitez isn't allowed to spend the fees he recoups.

It's pretty clear he doesn't rate/need Babel, but like Keane, he's better than no-one at all.

You'd think so, but if Rafa can get away without using him, he usually does.

With that in mind, I don't think the squad would be weakened by much if he did end up leaving.

Personally I hope we keep him.

Can't really come up with any good arguments why mind.

Anyways I'll keep my fingers firmly crossed he'll start come Spurs. Instead of Kuyt would be fine.

We looked particularly awesome against Citeh in the first 5-10 minutes before we got hit by injuries and Babel took great part in that overall positive looking approach. (I know it's a rather slim deed do judge upon so few playing minutes but this Season is all about holding on to what've looked good isn't it - and his goal against Lyon was great too).

Do you think we're holding out for more then?

It seems an odd situation to be in, considering the majority of people on here, myself included, were not expecting anything more than £5-6M for him for the reason you've just hit upon. It could just be Purslow being a tough negotiator. If so, I hope he knows what he's doing.

If we're holding out for more, it sounds unrealistic in regard to what we paid and how shit he's been. It sounds more like either Rafa is worried he won't see the money, or he's worried about leaving us short of numbers.

He never plays anyway. And when he does he hardly ever performs apart from the odd sparse flash. So it's no great loss IMO.

I always thought we'd get a good fee back for him. It's funny that a lot of non-Liverpool supporters I've spoken to actually rate Babel - they remember his good reputation, they've seen him come on for us and score goals and they see potential there, which there is still is. Now sure, they probably don't know him as well as we do, but it provides a bit of balance to the ever so slightly over the top "he's a fucking shithouse cunt" viewpoint.

He's got obvious talent. I've always doubted his mental attitude to realise that talent though.

Much as I'm fed up with Benitez nowadays he can't be held responsible for everything. The players are the ones on the pitch and their attitude and application has been simply lacking lately.

So it's only under rafa he's a spineless cunt?

He hasnt got that additional discipline to work, otherwise he'd have a first touch by now.

He's made it clear though, that a move to Birmingham isn't interesting.

Don't know if he could be talked in to a move, but if he's to be sold it will have to be a bigger club.

What's Babel said about Birmingham?

He's not in a position to be fussy right now. He needs games if he's as desperate to go the World Cup as he suggests.

From the Echo;

Ryan Babel is the most high-profile of the expected departures, having fallen down the pecking order in recent weeks after a disappointing campaign.

Liverpool have already rejected a bid for the Holland international from ambitious Birmingham City who, armed with the cash from new owner Carson Yeung, had tabled a £9m offer.

In any case, a move to St Andrew’s holds little interest to Babel, the winger instead preferring a move abroad in search of the regular first-team football that could bolster his chances of appearing in this summer’s World Cup.

8th in the league with the prospect of strengthening heavily in January? That's not too shabby.

(Probably being whooshed)

damp squid again
Er, that's "damp squib", my friend (it's a type of firework).

All squid are damp. They live in the sea. 😉

I thought a squib was an explosive used for cannons?
I've always known it as a kind of mini-firecracker, but I just googled it and apparently it can also carry a more general meaning of a small explosive charge used for various purposes, including the cannon one.

Has anyone checked to see if Babel's tweeted about being on the road to Birmingham yet...

Get rid... I'd rather see Pacheco get a chance.
