I've just been reading through a world cup history book to my younger sons and we were on the 1982 World Cup. That French midfield - Genghini, Giresse, Tigana and Platini - has there ever been a better one?

dreambeliever would say beckham - scholes -keane -giggs

The AC Milan sides in the late 80's and early 90's with Gullit, Rijkaard, Donadoni, Albertini, etc. would be in with a good shout too.

edit: In fact, you could change the subject title to Best Defence ever and the Milan teams of that era would still not be out of place in the argument.

*starts stopwatch*

I reckon there'll be a suggestion involving the names Laudrup, Lerby, Arnesen & Olsen as soon as a certain person gets a whiff of this thread.

It was an unbelievable midfield but I think most people would have Luis Fernandez in there instead of Genghini. I have great memories of this midfield and remember Fernandez as an integral part of it but I only have a vague recollection of Genghini.

I went with Sammy Lee over Case but either would do. Souness, McDermott and Kennedy were world class and Lee & Case were both fine players who augmented that trio admirably.
I too would go with Case over Sammy Lee. Apart from being, in my mind, the better player, I think Jimmy Case was also more a contemporary of the others - certainly if Sammy Lee and Ray Kennedy played together it was not for long.

You may have a point. The 4 I mention are the ones I remember together - and also the 4 who played that 3-3 semi v Germany. I remember Fernandez as well, but my memory has him more as the "5th" man.

Not the best but the French national side of the late 90's / early 00's weren't bad, any midfield with Zidane is worth a mention.

Vieira Deschamps Zidane in the middle for France at Euro 2000, with a choice of Djorkaeff, Henry and Pires filling wide positions

Yeah I just checked and Case would make more sense as he played with those 3 others far more often.

I think the reason I thought Lee was more of a fixture with Souness, Kennedy and McDermott might have something to do with the fact that Case was never guaranteed a game; he played regularly but with peripheral players such as Heighway (towards the end of his career), Sheedy, a young Sammy Lee etc Case could never be sure of his place. When Sammy Lee became a regular he pretty much became an ever-present for at least 3 or 4 seasons.

There were similarities, yes, but in addition to those skills I'd say McDermott's incredible ability to time his runs into the box would make him priceless these days.

The AC Milan midfield in the 2005 CL final was something special, Kaka, Pirlo, Seedorf and Gattuso, 3 World Cup winners medals along with a shit load of other honours, not the best ever but deserves a mention.
