Johnson haters gonna hate, but he's england no.1 Admittedly c. smalling makes that XI a bit strange, but he is in excellent company!

Hard to argue with that apart from Smalling, Johnson is the best of a bad bunch really though to be fair to him he was one of Englands better players in the Euros, maybe he'll up it, could do with him upping it for us first.

And this should be Rooneys last chance as an automatic pick for England at a major tournement, if he doesn't perform now he never will, personally wouldn't mind seeing Wilshere in that position ahead of Rooney.

We have
ONE Decent keeper
THREE decent LB
THREE decent RB
ONE decent CB
NO decent DM
THREE good CM
NO Good AM
TWO good wingers
TWO class forwards.

The weakness is right through the middle.
Cahill is a good CB but thats it and im unconvinced by any pairing of Gerrard/Wilshere/Henderson.

My team for the first game would be
Hart
Cole
Cahill
Jagielka coz who the fuck else
Walker

Gerrard
Wilshere

Sterling
Rooney
Lallana

Sturridge.

Smalling 7.1? I'd love to know what games they've been watching, he's been average at best this season and should be way behind Jagielka based on their comparative form this season.

If I were Hodgson I'd be begging Terry to come out of retirement, trying to play everyone in their club roles as much as possible and looking to take advantage of relationships built at club level because imo that served Spain extremely well.

Chelsea centre defence, a Liverpool right side / strong influence in attack and midfield

-------------------------Hart
---Johnson----Terry--Cahill----Baines
----------------------Gerrard
------------Henderson--Wilshere
----Sterling------Sturridge-----Rooney

I'd consider putting Lallana and/or Barkley in that midfield for either Henderson or Wilshere. Also Crouch should be on the bench

good team - I am a Wilshere fan, but I think Lallana has ben great and should start.

Oxlade Chamberlain should start.

He probably should but still a great option from the bench, same with Wilshere, great player but can't help but be biased with Hendo alongside Gerrard, Hendersons workrate is an advantage for him and will be needed alongside Gerrard.

Depends on what formation but all 3 of Gerrard, Wilshere and Hendo could play but that would likely mean Rooney out wider which i don't see the point of as hes not at his most effective out there and there are better options for the wider positions.

I quite like the idea of

Hart
Cole
Terry
Cahill
Johnson

Gerrard
Wilshere
Henderson

Rooney
Sturridge
Sterling

That cuts deep.
I'm devastated that Ireland aren't there to make clowns of themselves.
Ah - come on Leo! I'm not a massive England fan - especially if it acts to the detriment of LFC - but I love football.
The spectacle of the WC is fun and at least having a minor investment in the outcome is a good laugh.

I don't really watch Lallana enough to comment on him but yea Wilshere doesn't seem to be in the best form of his life, he seems like the weakest candidate in the side at the moment, I put him in based on how good he can potentially be.

I get the impression that in recent years the better international sides have a big chunk of a successful club side making up their starting 11 and this year in the premier league thats us, we're the only ones playing well with 5+ English players getting regular games.

Yeah I can't wait to see podge spread his genius onto the world audience.
Should be a good laugh if nothing else.

The problem is you have been watching the wrong player.
Wiltshire is way better.

England's biggest problem in recent (however you wanna define that) years is their inability to keep their cool and play a measured game. When things get tough invariably they resort to running around like crazy, hoofing and just generally being shit.

As such, I'd pick eleven players that are least prone to doing that. Unfortunately we're being managed by someone who has that sort of shit coded into his DNA.

I'm getting a sense of deja vu.

We are weak in the middle, as said, so I'd pad that area out. The problem is fitting Rooney into the picture when you play three in the middle, which shouldn't be a problem given that he's been terrible for England for years now and should start on the bench.

Go for youth, the future.

If you're having Gerrard at the base of the midfield three, you're automatically assuming Hodgson is going to send his midfield and wide forwards out to harry and press opponents like we do, while he sits and protects the back four, sweeping up and closing out those who slip through the net, and then delivering passes from deep. If he doesn't have the menacing Liverpool droids in front of him, I think you may find his flaws exposed and him having a Villa-type game.

My impression is that the system of presses we use is not a random mesh of people just running after other people who have the ball, but a well-practiced and rehearsed system. You could very well have Gerrard, Henderson, Sterling and Sturridge in the front six, but if Hodgson doesn't apply the same system, or if the other two guys (especially the gung-ho Rooney) don't buy into or can't perform with the methods, then things will break down and Gerrard will be exposed. We've seen for Liverpool, how one player (e.g. Coutinho on a bad day) not doing his job well in the pressing / harrying, affects the whole setup.
