Benteke - BOOOOOO the puns

Love your attitude, mate. I was not in favor of spending the Sterling money on Benteke either, but now that's it's a done deal, let's be constructive and see how it can work. I like the "diamond" idea; seeing this front 6 (plus Clyne and Moreno/Gomez providing width from the flanks) fills me with a lot more optimism than the 4-3-3/4-5-1 with Benteke as the lone striker, which is what we mostly see in the media as our future formation. A trio of floaty wingers/AMs behind one target man may sound logical at first, but Benteke is much worse than Ibra, Lewandowski or even Giroud at bringing teammates into play and our wingers/AMs don't pose enough of a consistent goal threat to make this formation truly effective.

Of course Coutinho needs to be the playmaker pulling the strings in the middle and both Milner and Henderson will start the majority of games in CM. For the DM position, I would suggest Can; another option would be to play him at the middle of 3 CBs (the Beckenbauer role). And when we need to freshen things up in attack, the likes of Lallana, Markovic, and Ibe can come on for one of the strikers (or both) and get busy running at the tired defenders. This might all still work, especially if Firmino hits the ground running.

It could work in theory, yes. But it is contingent on a number of things:

1) Rodgers actually playing the formation - If he plays the 4-3-3 with Benteke as the pivot, then like you said, we're going to struggle since Benteke's not the greatest technically. @studsup posted a couple of videos in the Lacazette thread which amply demonstrated his lack of technical ability in build-up play.

2) Benteke adjusting to a new role - My biggest discomfort is that Benteke has spent 3 (formative) years in this league playing as a central pivot. Can he adjust his style to a face-the-goal striker now that he's surrounded by much better players?

Benteke has some fantastic attributes - he has brutish strength, a powerful shot and the technique to get that shot off in tight spaces - it's why I made the Hasselbaink comparison - he had some very similar attributes (though he was much smaller in stature). And like Benteke, he wasn't the greatest all-round player, but was an absolutely ruthless goalscorer. And his absolute best was playing in a 4-4-2 next to Gudjohnsen, who was a very skilful and intelligent player. That's the sort of thing I want to see in Benteke and Firmino. Benteke should focus exclusively on facing the goal, making powerful drives and unleashing that shot of his. The less we have him involved in build-up play, the better.

3) Firmino being as good as advertised - I do have pretty high hopes as far as this is concerned though.

Re: Can for the holding position - I'm not entirely sure. I think he likes to rove too much to be an effective holding mid. I don't think he has the positional sense or the discipline. I also think we'd be doing greater justice to his abilities by playing him slightly higher up the pitch.

He could potentially be suitable as a libero, but that would mean splitting the CBs, and I'm not really a fan of that, especially with our CBs.

If it sticks it means we've pissed 32.5 million up the wall. Which won't be ideal. Still, you'll have coined a name that a small collective of work-shy forumites use to refer to this waste of space. I suppose we can all take some solace in that.

im not sure but i do believe the credit for the moniker bentheskey lies with moi.
