Same team as away to Lille.

Kuyt back to the right for two reasons; 1 - To support Glenjo against the qwalitee Di Maria. 2 - To push across and make a midfield 3 when we're in possession to free the Babelator of defensive responsibility.

Sound.

Oh, and for anyone who hasn't watched Benfica, they're kinda like newcastle Keegan-stylee, in that they attack for 90 minutes. In Cardozo, Di Maria, Aimar, Saviola and Ramires they have genuine threats all over the fucking place.

Aimar - the best player that never was.

We all expected Aimar to be a Liverpool player when Rafa first arrived. How is he playing these days? Haven't seen much of Benfica.

Aye, him and Baraja.

I expect a very tough game, but if we score and keep the defense tight, i think we will go through, Benfica love to play triangles and one touch football, so it's vital to stop them playing through or midfield

I work with a few Portugese lads who are Benfica fans and they reckon they'll batter us.

I think we're going to be majorly up against it.

I've watched them a couple of times, and they can play some spanking stuff. They absolutely bummed the Bluenoses earlier in the contribution, but Everton had a back four out containing some absolute Joey's, so that was no surprise.

They're a good side alright.

Yep and Benfica are going into this match off the back of a 1-0 win against their main title rivals, Braga.

It's a wonder they haven't featured more in the Champions League over the years.

I believe Di Maria is their main man, City&Chelsea both linked with £25 million bids in the summer.

I'd be delighted if we leave Portugal with a score draw.

They have to sell all their best players, that's why.

The Portugese League is the Scottish League with sunshine.

I think yossi will get the nod over babel

Cardozo will be a pretty stern test. Benfica are a good side, and have loads of attacking players.

The main reason he'll be back on the right is that Maxi is ineligible.

I'm hopeful that Insua and Lucas don't play, but that's only sensible because they're not very good players.

wont happen bren. they'll play at the weekend as well. to be fair I can see why rafa is doggedly sticking with the mash/lucas combo its been SUCH a success away from home, why change it...

Is Aquilani eligible? if so I'd have thought this is the perfect game for him.
Yes he's eligable.

Something like Ryan's team for this one, I guess. We need to defend hard but also to hit them with pace and commitment on the counter - not in the half-arsed inaccurate unthreatening way we did at Lille. 0-0 away from home is a shite result in Europe: we need to score.

So will they if they take that attitude into the game with them, especially if we bring our Sunderland form and confidence along.

we wont, we'll play this game like we play all our away games, keeping it tight and looking to nick the away goal.

I'm not talking about match tactics, neil, but about the players being on their game and having confidence. They were actually enjoying themselves against Bruce's lot and that's got to be a good way to go into this tie.

oh, I agree unfortunately that's not what is going to happen unless benfica score first.
remember when barca should first and it made us come out of our shells and totally out play them?
They'll probably play us off the park and then we'll end up with their Manager for 6 years.
One of their players will play a blinder and we'll buy him for £20m, in a postion we don't need filling (goalkeeper?) and then we'll put them on the bench for 30 games and sell them for half the price, probably back to Portugal.

I reckon Babel will start but you are probably right with regards to Aquilani.

I do however hope you're spot on with that team-selection.

Logically we'd be a tougher in midfield with Lucas in there, but considering he's rarely given licence to do anything other than sit alongside Masher, we'd just end up inviting pressure.

Against Pompey in the first half he was 'allowed' to break, and we looked better for it, second half though it looked like he was instructed to hold his position more, and we lacked an outlet.

I don't think Yossi would be much better, he cuts inside too much and leaves Insua isolated, I know Babel cuts inside too but he does hold his position more wide, and his pace would at least put pressure on their fullback more.

Babel is in decent form and Yossi is shit on the left, so..
