how can you not judge a man for being unfaithful? since when was it okay to be unfaithful?
Why should anyone other than the wife give a flying fuck?
He's a role model - it sets a bad example for kids nowadays when presidents, footby players and 'role models' are fucking everything in front of them because they can, even though they're marryied. It may be a 'old fashioned' view but hey.

+1.

Because the institution of marriage is integral to a stable society and unfaithfulness strikes at its heart. Whether or not one thinks it should is just not relevant - that's the way a majority of people feel.

Footballer's role models? This old chestnut. I think it's outdated. Your parents should be your role models.

Besides, I don't think Ashley Cole has ever marketed himself as a role model

Agreed. Role models never ask to become one and lets face it, Cole is hardly the most high profile footballer around. His mistake was getting married in the first place as he wasn't mature enough to respect his vows.

Say what you want mate, how many kids do you hear say, "I want to be like Gerrard" or "I want to be like me mom"?

They are what kids aspire to be ...

Yeah, though I (personally) don't think marriage is a natural thing for men anyway. Whilst I agree with what JJ is saying about having a civil society, evolution shows that man wants to spread his seed with as many mates as possible.

Thus being a man, it's hard to judge any man who is 'unfaithful'. It happens. Everyday. And when you have as much money as he does and hot women are throwing themselves at you, I don't care of you're married to Jessica Alba, you'll still be want to sleep with Beyonce.

I presume you're talking about young boys right?

In which case, it'd be worrying if they wanted to be like their moms. But, yes, i've heard boys say "I want to be like my *Dad*"

Sure, you have urges - but you follow through with all your urges? I know I've wanted to beat the living shit out of people and have had 'urges' to kill people, and each time, nothing happened. Urges are fine, we're human beings. But what separates you from an animal if you act on all your urges when you KNOW they're wrong?

My sentiments exactly. Why else are there millions of sperm and a finite amount of eggs? In lots of societies, men have several wives for that exact reason. Being desirable to women is just as much a curse as a blessing.

Yes you are embarrassing. Do you have an actual opinion or argument? We're trying to have a mature discussion here and you're ruining it.

The urge to kill someone is far different from the urge to sleep with someone. You'd have to REALLY hate someone to want to kill them. You don't have to really love someone to want to sleep with them. Besides, Cole isn't just a normal guy whom the urge to cheat comes once every few years. The guy is a young, (by accounts) handsome fella who is having those urges thrown in his face almost everyday. So, naturally, it's not so easy to always resist them.
Add to that, his wife is on the road with her career and he doesn't have any kids by her. It's not hard to see why he would look to play away. It's like Kopking says, I think his mistake was probably just marrying too early. He'd have avoided all this scandal and could do what he want.

An urge is an urge. Be it sexual, suicidal, food etc. Of course we all have them, or think about them. But which is 'normal' - those who ignore the urge and do what's right, or those who go through with the urge? I cannot relate to what Cole went through - I don't have the same value system as him (I suspect) and I don't have the temptations thrown at me all the time. So I shouldn't judge I guess as I haven't walked 'in his footsteps' but I got married probably when he did (age wise), and if I can handle it 'maturity' wise, I'm reasonably sure he can too.

You'd hope so at his age, Wizzy, but I doubt it very much.

IMO resisting urges and giving way to them are both normal. Doesn't make them both right. Controlling ourselves is what distinguishes us from animals. Or should do.

Could I just remind cut-price Jung, own-brand Kant and the rest of the Aldi philosophers in this thread, that we are in actual fact just enjoying a good laugh at that fucking bell-end Ashley Cole, his seedy texting, dreadful elasticated white briefs and shattered marriage.

Hahaha, Ashley Cole.

Can't believe he's 30... Time flies.. Sadly I'd have him here in a heartbeat for 20mill in the summer - even though he's 30 and a cunt he's still one of the best LBs since Roberto Carlos..

True story - about 6- 7months ago (right at the start of the season) After a night on the lash me and a mate decided to head to the local kebab house and get the doner in. Right outside was sat this proper nice Ferrari. My mate said quick as flash 'I bet that's a footballer's car' - This was in a town called Godalming in Surrey where loads of London based footballer live close too. Anyway as we walk around the car the drivers side door was open and there behind the wheel - Looking a bit pissed himself sat Ashley Cole scoffing a massive doner Kebab. My mate meanwhile has got his mobile phone out and ballsy as you like went right up to him and began snapping away.

Old Ashley took exception to this (pretty understandable really) But my mate just laughed and said 'These pics will look good in the weekend papers eh Ashley!' Anyway just as he started getting out of his car another bloke came out of the Kebab shop. Ashley shouts something to him like 'Grab that fucking phone' - This guy started running after my mate while i ran the opposite way. Anyway we both got away. My mate sensing he could make a few quid sent emails to all the London tabloids etc but no one wanted the pics which we thought was a bit odd. I will see if I can get them from him and post them on here if you anyone fancies a giggle at the tosser 8)

This rolemodel stuff is often overplayed.

As if children care about the sexual lives of John Terry and Ashley Cole. 99% will be blissfully unaware and the other percent couldn't give a damn.

Oh, JJ and LTW... you make me laugh. If the maintenance of a 'civilised society' really does depend on the ability of young, rich, fit, thick men with loads of spare time on their hands to resist primitive physical urges, then I think it's fair to say we must be doomed.

What would you do with Cole and Terry then - stone them to death? Bury them alive? Buuuuuurrrrrrrnnnnn 'em?

That was a funny last sentence, I was laugh hard. Nice one, seriously.

I didn't say that society is based on the 'young, rich, fit, thick men' - though what Cole went through is sadly becoming the norm in our society (what's the divorce rate now in most countries? 40%? 50%?). It's just a telling testament that most posters have no issues with cheating on one's spouse (though I'm not surprised, it was the same thing when we discussed Clinton too last year). Alas, who cares. We are doomed anyways*
