Arsenal (a)

"My overriding emotion is of real pride.
"We played Arsenal earlier on in the season and we were disappointing. I always felt this game would be a benchmark of how we've been progressing.
"It's a game we should have won - we didn't but we showed great resilience and quality and had other chances to get other goals. I'm very proud of the team.

I'm bored of Rodgers being 'proud' of our team .

Why shouldn't he be proud? Most were expecting us to go there and get battered, we should have won. He wasn't saying we were brilliant, he said he was disappointed we didn't win and was largely proud of the performance. I doubt he went into the dressing room and thanked us for our fantastic defending. Stop moaning.

I think it is very brave to say we should have won. We were outplayed throughout most of the game. First half we had some good counter attacks that could have given us a goal, but on the other hand Reina made some super saves and they missed some sitters as well, so we could just as well have lost with 2 goals.

We could have won by two aswell, there's not many teams who've gone there this season and scored too many.

The two golas we got came as a result of comic defending. Well taken when the chance arised. And we had a couple of brilliant counters in both halves. But all in all it felt like hanging in the rope for most most of the game while the opposition boxer is smashing your head in, and then say you should have knocked him? Well...

if someone offered me 2-2 up front I would have think it was a good result. But the gameplan was abysmal. Playing footie like that is like dropping condoms in Thailand.. it very seldom ends up with a positive result (or maybe that is what it does).

Insig all four goals were the result of comic defending. I thought we were comfortable in the first half but of course when they got back in the game so quickly after our second, the impetus was always going to be with them.

In my eyes it is a bit different comic show when 4 of their players fail to clear or hit each other, compared to an set piece which came as a result of well organized attacking play, and a lovely strike from a nice set up.

Agger's defending of the set piece was comic, so was the defending that left Walcott unmarked in the box. Maybe not as comic as the defending for our goals but comic nonetheless.

Very enjoyable game to watch actually.

I think if we had taken a 2+ goal lead in at half time then it would have been game over. The Henderson open goal chance was a big miss - should have squared it but I obviously wouldn't have been complaining had he scored. Aggers cleared header off the line, Sturridge tackling the keeper, Suarez being gifted the ball from a goal kick.. They all could have led to goals. Second half we just lost that bit of urgency and then with that unexpected goal from Hendo we dropped even more.

Once Sturridge came off we had no real outlet - Suarez was never supported in the second half. I think it was criminal to bring on Enrique as LW when Sagna and Mertesacker were there for the taking had Sterling come on instead.

For me that was Rodgers saying he would take a draw when he could have gone for the win. Disappointing as I think we could have taken 3 points but if offered a draw before I would have been content.

To pick out one player at fault defending that set piece is bollocks. It is a good position and difficult to defend that one when the cross is as accurate as that. Our defending of set pieces in general is comic yes, but it mirrors the fact that BR has never felt the heat inside the box during a top match. No one covering the post in example. With only the goalie on the line the net is wide open for anyone who manage to flick it toward the goal. And the way Arsenal plays, with double up and sometimes tripple up in wide positions, with the ball moving rapidly and accuratly it is not comic defending in the moment that set them up. It is a weak defesive set up as a team allowing them to get in those positions. They did it all match, and the one he scored from was no different than the few Reina saved. it is a big difference on Comic defending with personals mistakes and weak defensive setup.

They're both 29 this year. Neither are the future.

Yep, I don't think I'd be happy with either of them in our team in a year or two, neither are really good enough, and I doubt they'll improve.

The whole thing about which is slightly worse than the other is boring, I don't think either are top class, they both make far too many mistakes, and I hope we look to replace one of them in the summer, and the other soon after. If I had to choose one to get rid of first, it would be Agger.

There are also posters who thinks we should sell Suarez. Or Johnson.

Some will never learn.

I beg to differ.

Defenders, especially those not too reliant on pace, often improves with age. Agger is 28 now and could just as well have 6-7 good Seasons left in him yet.

If I am not mistaken we bought Sami as 27-year-old didn't we? Imagine if we'd sold him on as 29 eh?

Ok

KHL in disagreeing with even veiled criticism of Agger shocka.
You just seem very upset with age. Same goes for Skrtel, he will also get better with age imo.

You are aware that United are walking the league with two almost 40-year-olds right?

Almost no one gets 'better' in their 30s. Top class players like Hyypia and Scholes (and might I add, mostly those who're less reliant on their physical powers) manage not to regress, or find ways to be equally effective.

The comparison with Agger and Skrtel is retarded, who're nowhere near as good in the first place, and have actually been known for their reliance on pace and strength (especially Skrtel).

Probably been covered but can't be arsed reading through 25 pages.
Why didn't Pepe do anything about Walcott's goal? Hit hard from not far out, yes, but it was an inch from him. Weird.

Wrong-footed, was expecting a shot at the near post.

You think Agger, who's been playing in the Champions League and in the toughest league in the world since he was 19, is nowhere near as good as Sami was at his age, having played most of his career in Willem II and Finland at the time?

Controversial.

Is it?

Sami was much fucking better at 28 than agger or Skrtel.

The ting is that they are all smart defenders, who are capable to adjust. Sami was a star, and he led the team by example. However, he would have been lost as well yesterday with all the rapid pass and move around him and absolutely no structure around him.

28 year old Sami was the best defender I've ever seen in my lifetime. Not just Liverpool, but the best I've seen period.

Controversial?

That sexy cunt could deal with Duncan Ferguson and Rivaldo with the same amount of consummate ease.

28 year old Sami was given a enormous amount of protection from a VERY deep lying Liverpool team and an excellent dedicated DM in Didi. I don't want to detract from Sami's accomplishments (as he was a super player) but our current defence has a midfield in front of them that you could drive a truck through.

That's another question though (and I agree with you totally), I was just responding to KHL's ludicrous comparison of Sami with Agger.
