Arsenal (a)

That's another question though (and I agree with you totally), I was just responding to KHL's ludicrous comparison of Sami with Agger.
I didn''t compare them, you did.

Said one was massively better than the other as 28-year-olds which is quite obviously wrong.

It's always extremely difficult to compare players decades apart and even more so as they are quite different types. I loved Sami, but he also made mistakes now and then, and also had some areas where he wanted to improve.

– Theo Walcott, in addition to scoring the equaliser, managed a pass accuracy of 95% across the 90 minutes.
– Aaron Ramsey had the most touches of the ball (135), twice as many as any Liverpool player with the exception of Glen Johnson (74).
– Olivier Giroud had the most shots (6), and half of his efforts were on-target.
– Giroud also won more aerial duels than any other player (7).
– Daniel Sturridge had the fewest touches of any player involved last night (28).
– Glen Johnson made 9 successful tackles, marginally more than his teammate Lucas Leiva’s 7 – the highest number recorded by an Arsenal player was Bacary Sagna’s 5.
– Santi Cazorla led the game in interceptions (5).
– Theo Walcott attempted 9 crosses, yet no Liverpool player managed more than 3.
– Luis Suarez was dispossessed more than any other player (6).
– Arsenal had 19 shots to Liverpool’s 13.
– Of those 13 shots from Liverpool, 77% of them came from inside the penalty box.
– Arsenal played 644 total passes compared to Liverpool’s 401.
– 42% of Arsenal attempts on goal came from outside the penalty box.

Lucas being outdone in the successful tackle-area by Johnson says it all really, doesn't it?

Yeah, it's terrible to be outdone by that no-mark Glenjo. Besides, it's not like Glenjo was expected to tackle anyone coming down our left flank, was he?

Considering most of Arsenal's attacks came down the left, and Johnson is a fantastic player, it doesn't really say anything.

Wrong-footed, was expecting a shot at the near post.

Not good enough. He's paid tens of thousands a week to do one thing. Put his body, any part of it, between the ball and the goal. Not even moving is just plain weird, I don't care if he was expecting the ball to stop, produce twin coy carp, do a little dance then burrow its way underground into the back of the net.

He did move. He was moving the other way, until he realised it was too late. From that sort of range it's very hard to tell what way it's going to go until it's too late. Why do so many keepers dive the wrong way for a penalty? It's called anticipation.

What about the other 4 or 5 saves he made? The were top class. It's not a case of him losing us 2 points at all. Reina earned us that point last night as much as Henderson or anyone else did. People need to get off his case.

Here are my thoughts if anyone cares;

-Carragher was excellent, blood sweat and tears for the 90mins. Podolski tried to kill him with a football but that's meat and drink for our Jamie.
-Pepe made some fine saves, especially at point blank range from Walcott in the first half. I don't fault him for the goal. It was in the back of the net before he had that much of a chance to react.
-Carzola is a joy to watch. Composed, intelligent, ambitious player oozing class and guile. Many raved about him while he was still at Villareal and then at Malaga. A bargain for anything under 20million.
-Agger was at fault for the first goal allowing Giroud drop of his shoulder. However, he was decent bar that. Some timely interceptions and blocks on the line. Had an effort cleared off their line also.
-Delighted for Henderson. Showing confidence and ambition finally. When he picked up the ball for his goal I was begging him to go at Arsenal, drive at them. He did exactly that. A year ago he would have held up the play to allow support to join him. His obvious increased strenght and mass showed as he bullied his way in past a few defenders.
-I used to think Giroud was a big lump and didn't see the fuss but his link up play was excellent yesterday. His lay offs in and around the box we're impressive and Arsenal feed off him at times.
-Whilshire is going to be a regular for England for the next decade. Excellent running power and can perform in any role in the centre of midfield. He's an obvious star.
-Sturridge allowed Suarez do too much work. Help him for FFS Daniel.

Oh LOL @ Giroud getting a booking for diving. On a side note, Azilpulaceuta's (sp?) dive was worse. Bale would have been proud.

Agree with most mate.

Not quite in the Carzola fanzone yet mind. For every good there is often a bad.

I've always liked Santi and he has racked up a decent amount of goals and assists this season. Plus he loves taking care of the football and is two footed. HE'S NOT EVEN ARGENTINIANIANIAN.

It's not 'obviously wrong' at all. Here's an example of how highly rated Sami was in his first season, watch Fergie's reaction after he got clattered by Ole at Old Trafford, the camera turns to Fergie on the touchline and he mouths to one of his assistants "game over".

I couldn't imagine him saying the same about Agger. I can't believe you even said that. Alot of players have played in the Premiership for a long time and played CL football, it doesn't mean they're up there with the best, by any stretch.

Sami came here and walked it from the off, Agger has had what? 7 years at it, and he's still not close to what Sami was in his first season. Neither's Skrtel, they're both well off the standard of our previous pairings under Rafa and Ged.

Quite right.

So you're saying that Sami got clattered by Ole Gunnar Solskjær?

*winks*

He's my favourite Reds keeper since Clem. He was good all night except for that. That though was piss poor.

But was it piss poor? If he got a foot to it, people would be moaning about how he should have caught and held it. He can't win.

Molby on the defending:

Defending set-pieces is a real problem. Brendan Rodgers likes zonal marking and I know there are stats which back up the effectiveness of playing that way.
But it was a big issue under Rafa Benitez and now it’s back in the spotlight because it’s costing us. I just think for the players’ benefit it’s worth Rodgers making a few changes to the way we defend set-pieces.
Why not give four players the responsibility to pick up opponents and man mark? That way they know exactly where they stand.
The problem with zonal marking is that there isn’t any responsibility. If you concede a goal players just look at each other because they were marking space rather than a player. When you get it wrong, it looks awful and that’s what happened at the Emirates when Olivier Giroud got a free header six yards out

I wonder what Rodgers picked up from mourinho. One is a beast and won the CL twice in setting his teams defesively, while the other is doing the excact opposite!!!

Yeah but Rafa was getting shit about zonal marking when we had the tightest defence in Europe.

I think zonal marking is a bit of a misnomer. The fact is we have very few players in the team who are good in the air. Man marking won't make us any better at heading.

Couple that with the fact that our players don't know how zonal marking works, and we're on a winner.

All I know is that Agger was marking a zone with no ball in it, as Giroud was heading the fucking thing into the net.
