Match Thread Arsenal (a) - Sun October 27th 16:30

Is there a former player that hates us more than Stephen Warnock? His analysis for Sky is always so insanely shit and always negative.
Its not a free kick to Szobo when Merino clatters him from behind as its a cowardly challenge and he backs into him. Szobo doesnt even look behind him so has no clue that Merino jumps on top of him. Little did we know that one of Szobos traits is having eyes in the back of his head as well.

How on earth can they justify paying these so called experts. Same with Neville. Sounds like he wants to cry when we score a goal.

I haven't seen anyone in the media attack the PGMOL as much as Warnock did for the Diaz non-goal against Spurs.

What happened to Szobo was arguably not a free kick. Pretty soft imo

He's the worst. Always negative. Such a shit pundit.

Its a free kick. And its a handball on Havertz and a free kick on Trent by Jesus.

The manager fucked up in this game with his initial selection. Szobo should have started this game, we needed his energy and covering and because he was not playing we had zero control of midfield. Maca has been aweful against Arsenal everytime he has played them. Slot should have watched the home and away fixtures from last season to get an odea of what would happen. Good on him for changing, but also that Endo moment where he did not pass, I think he had specific instructions to retain ball at all costs but really he should have passed.

Based on that video.
16 passes failed
4 successful.
20% success rate.

But - his corner and his pass created both goals.

Perfectly timing his run too…

That was so unusual, that I genuinely think that it's why Endo didn't release the ball... He expected Darwin to be offside, so he held it, to be safe.

Watching it live, I was initially going spare when he didn't play him in, but I almost immediately said out loud, to nobody near me 'first time that donkey's been onside all season, too!'.

Had Mac converted that header then his output would’ve been greater despite some horror balls there.

Lets be honest. There are some clearances and crosses in there. Long passes is stretching it just to make it look worse then it is.

I rewatched this game, because it was one of those that was fucking miserable to watch live. I actually found it quite absorbing.

Watching it again, I actually thought the game was less dominant by Arsenal than I felt at the time. They were the most threatening from like 30-45, where they were very dominant, without us fully cracking. I also thought we were really weak in midfield, but rewatching thought that in general the midfields mostly made for a stalemate, with no team doing much. They passed better than us, especially when on top. Most of this game hinged on wing play and finding accurate outlet balls. Arsenal did this more than we did, and we allowed them to do it a little more. The fault was both quality of our passing (Trent) from the back and the individual duels involved. Diaz lost his, Salah lost his, Martinelli lost his, Saka won his.

A lot is being made of Robertson, who didn't have a great game, but this team was just lopsided from about 0-30 minutes, with our midfield being willing to overwhelm the right flank, and Saka is a very dangerous forward who the team and the crowd fully expect to do something every time he has the ball. This is what Salah was like years ago, and we'd think any team stupid for leaving him alone against a fullback, rather than thinking that fullback was shit for being beaten. We started protecting Robertson after that which made it much harder to get out or press.

Nunez was our most consistent performing forward over the whole game, because of what he did while we were out of sorts. He is at right back, he's at left back, he clatters Saka, he cripples Gabriel, he plays Salah in twice. He was really useful all over the fucking pitch. That was the dark arts on Gabriel by the way, make no mistake. That's some refined evil shit, not this stupid puppy dog jumping on people and picking up yellows. Almost every touch he had helped in some way.

Nunez wasn't an outlet ball, but that was left to Diaz and Salah, who mostly failed when we needed it. Diaz is the more galling, because that's sort of his job. He's at worst good for getting the ball, dribbling somewhere near the corner and then making a shit pass. Both of them were horrendous in the first half. Salah should have at least threatened the goal on 14. It's true that they didn't end up seeing the ball that much, but if we were more threatening, Arsenal would have been more conservative with their positioning, instead their backline all grew in confidence. If you can't help us establish a foothold, don't be surprised if we aren't camped in their half.

Trent's passing has been pretty bad at times for this season, but this one took the cake. The logic is he just keeps trying until he finally plays that one ball, and I guess that's how you could look at it, because it's what happened. He could also find his passing by not trying the hollywood ball every single time. I think this is his worst passing performance of all time.

Arsenals approach after half time was poor. Sure, it was exacerbated by their injuries, but the time wasting and stuff, clearly signalled to everyone their intent. It took their own crowd out of it and gave us a spell of possession that allowed all our subs to find their feet easily. Arsenal have not been a defensive juggernaut this year. They are conceding goals. Playing like this is really erosive to the spirit when it doesn't work.

I wish had the time to rewatch it. I think you’ve articulated my post match blathering better than I did.

If that was 50/50 the one 2 secs later, Havertz on Konate wasn't. So either way we were getting a FK

what would be Slots takeaway tactically from this game to allow to go better head to head v arsenal next time you think?

His reaction on the first goal was a sense of surprise and relief I thought.

He really was utter shite - one pass aside.
Remember how we sometimes got annoyed by Gerrard's Hollywood balls, well Trent is doing the same thing. Instead of waiting for the right opportunity to come he now forces it and more times than not it leads to nothing.

Invites pressure. That Balon D’Or comment and its backlash might be impacting him.

It’s ok to dream man, just don’t make us collateral damage in your dream. Let us get a fee!

I feel this was the chance to win the game ... if endo plays it, Nunez and his pace would get off a shot ... pity

Excellent post. Couldn't (be bothered to) have said it better.

Overall, the stalemate in the midfield suited their tactics better than ours and really made us reliant on the wingers providing an out ball. Diaz was contained too easily by Partey. Trent was playing fairly defensive in terms of positioning, which saw Mo isolated against his defender.

The fact that Trent couldn't find a red shirt for most of the match didn't help.

Szobo should've play acted there and rolled around the floor as if he'd been sniped like Saka or Havertz or Jesus or Martinelli or Trossard would've done....so I guess fair play to him staying on his feet.

Havertz jumps leading with his arm and actually catches Ibou in the face with his elbow (it's not a red as there isn't much force but more than enough for it to be a foul)......again fair play to him for staying on his feet, Saliba or Gabriel or Timber or Kiwior or White wouldn't have been as sportsman like in their conduct.

Have to say, the chances of Martinelli developing into a world-class attacker appear slim at this point. He has a lot of talent and usually plays well against us (until yesterday), but he appears to lack something to take him to the next level.

Right fit for Arsenal, then.
