I won't stop untill someone bites....

He'd be a quality option alongside someone younger like e.g.. Aquilani or Sneijder.

Has always been choosed ahead of Alonso at Int. level and albeit not at his youngest anymore he'd be a quality replacement - and he'd probably even come rather cheap should we be interested.

Goal.com Italy Slams Liverpool Target Aquilani As 'The New Dossena'
The speculated transfer of Aquilani to Liverpool would not be a good move for the Reds, opines Sergio Stanco from Goal.com Italy.

03-Aug-2009 9:41:59 PM

Xabi Alonso's potential move to Real Madrid could pave the way for AS Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani to join Rafael Benitez's Liverpool ranks, but Goal.com Italy's Sergio Stanco has warned Anfield fans that they could be chasing "another Andrea Dossena".

Stanco has reservations about the Liverpool target, as he feels that it is high time that the 26-year-old has converted his much-publicised potential into top-level performances.

He told Goal.com International, "In Italy, we said that Aquilani has a great potential and each year should be the one where he explodes, but we are still waiting."

He was swift to add, though, that, "No one is so stupid to say that he can not become a great player, but at the moment he still is not."

Stanco also pointed to the differences in England and Italy about fielding young players. A case in point is the way players such as Wayne Rooney and now more recently Jack Wilshere are brought through into the first-team at 16 or 17-years-of-age, while in Serie A, players such as Sebastian Giovinco and Riccardo Montolivo are still considered young.

The reason for this, Stanco suggests, is to alleviate the risk of "burn-out", so while there is still time for Aquilani to raise his game further, which Stanco hopes as "everybody knows how Italy needsa good midfielder", but the onus has instead turned to the nation's younger crop.

Goal.com Italy had further criticisms about an Aquilani switch. "He does not have the personality to conquest the Premier League. I think he will be a new Dossena who wants to come back to Italy after one year because he doesn't have enough."

Talk about a ringing endorsement...

I'm not sure about this kid, I'd much rather De Rossi.

I'm hoping to be wrong but he's been injury prone for years now, and seems to be an inferior version of Xabi, not an upgrade.

We don't wanna spunk 16mill on the new Harry Kewell :s
There isn't an upgrade available.

Didn't they slap a £20m price tag on him last summer? As much as I like him, he's not an Alonso replacement and he's too old.

I've said a few times that Senna would be a fantastic option. The problem is that I think you're wrong about him coming cheap - City had a bid around 12M rejected reportedly and the player himself stated that he's settled in Villarreal.

If he were younger then I'd be all for it because he is fantastic, but we just can't afford to spend that sort of money on someone who is what.. 32/33?

Re: Aquilani

This is from Wiki;

Steven Defour (born 15 April 1988 in Mechelen) is a Belgian footballer who plays for Standard Liège. He is well known for his playmaking ability and vision.

After playing youth football at Hombeek and KV Mechelen, Defour had been with Genk since 2002. His first-team debut was as a substitute in the 2004–05 season but his big breakthrough came the next season, when the 17 year old showed himself a player able to deploy his skills in the interest of the whole team, creating opening with his astute passing. Now Defour is on a five-year contract at Standard, learning from Portuguese star Sérgio Conceição and Milan Rapai? in the 2006–07 season. For the 2007–08 season, despite being only 21 years old, the right-sided Belgian international is now Standard's captain.

Defour said: "At Genk things became too easy for me. At Standard I may not play in every match at this stage, but I would rather have 20 good matches and start on the bench 14 times, than play 34 moderate matches. Even in training I've become a better player by working with players like Conceição and Rapai?. They give me advice, but they also listen to me. I've already criticized Conceição. Sérgio accepts my criticism as he realizes I am a good player."

During the 2007–08 season Defour received the Golden Shoe, the official award for most valuable player in the Belgian League, of the year 2007. The form that won him this award would continue as Defour led Standard to the Jupiler League title, for the first time in 25 years.

International career
Since making his international debut for Belgium against Saudi Arabia on 11 May 2006 he also has become a regular choice for national coach René Vandereycken

That would of course leave him well out of the picture.

He's 'only' six years older than Xabi though and it seems that he's peaking in a old age after all. Had his debute for Spain in 2006 - as a 30-year-old - and he kept Alonso benched back then.

You may be right of course as he's a tad bit old but it is possible to win the Premiership with 'older' players just ask veterans Giggs or Scholes. Would he adjust quickly he'd be a real steal at the right prize.

Senna shouldn't be the only replacement but more as an option. Both as Masher's back-up and as for Alonso's position in behind Gerrard.

Lets splash all we have of cash plus players on Cesc. He would be the by far best.

The one on the right would actually be an UPGRADE on Alonso in my book.

Re: Aquilani

Liverpool are close to signing Alberto Aquilani.

The Reds are close to completing the £16m signing of the Roma midfielder according to today's Daily Post. Rafael Benitez hopes to complete the signing before the end of the week.

Anywas you'll find that Senna is still faster than Alonso despite him beeing 33-years-old and as such it is irrelevant.

i don't doubt anyone thinks the lad isn't talented, just that he is injured more often than he plays. averaging 12 games a season over the last 5 seasons is awful.

Yep.. and all this talk about the differences between niggling injuries vs big/unlucky injuries doesn't wash with me really.. i mean, c'mon.. over FIVE seasons he's had 60 odd games.. FIVE seasons.. not just one or two where you can say "hard luck man".. but FIVE.

You don't think it's relevant that he may wish to hang up his boots in a couple of years? Come on, khl.

He's too old. Great player, too late in his career to be adapting to a new club in new league, particularly at the price we'd have to pay. It's a non-starter.

Aquilani will undergo a medical by Friday and if he signs he will earn 4 million euro (3.5million pounds) for 5 years, that is, the double of what he earns at Roma. The player, who will cost 20million euro in total, is excited about the move. The medical is crucial. (Italian news)

I think it's relevant of course but I would've thought the prize would differ accordingly between the two?

E.g.

Alonso = £30M
Senna = £8M

There's still a few good years in him so at the right prize he'd be a great buy as a stopgap signing untill someone younger (e.g. Aqui) would be ready to take the wheel.
