Liverpool expect to close the deal for Roma's £17m midfielder Alberto Aquilani in the next week

Does 'in the next week' mean next week or as soon as this week?
It means "in the next week".
What's taking so long?? If there had been a deal in place then surely this should just be a shoe in right?
It took us 3 months to sell Alonso mate. Nothing happens quickly these days.
If only that were true. Poor the Misred.
Terrible mate.

Goal.com Italy Slams Liverpool Target Aquilani As 'The New Dossena'
The speculated transfer of Aquilani to Liverpool would not be a good move for the Reds, opines Sergio Stanco from Goal.com Italy.

03-Aug-2009 9:41:59 PM

Xabi Alonso's potential move to Real Madrid could pave the way for AS Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani to join Rafael Benitez's Liverpool ranks, but Goal.com Italy's Sergio Stanco has warned Anfield fans that they could be chasing "another Andrea Dossena".

Stanco has reservations about the Liverpool target, as he feels that it is high time that the 26-year-old has converted his much-publicised potential into top-level performances.

He told Goal.com International, "In Italy, we said that Aquilani has a great potential and each year should be the one where he explodes, but we are still waiting."

He was swift to add, though, that, "No one is so stupid to say that he can not become a great player, but at the moment he still is not."

Stanco also pointed to the differences in England and Italy about fielding young players. A case in point is the way players such as Wayne Rooney and now more recently Jack Wilshere are brought through into the first-team at 16 or 17-years-of-age, while in Serie A, players such as Sebastian Giovinco and Riccardo Montolivo are still considered young.

The reason for this, Stanco suggests, is to alleviate the risk of "burn-out", so while there is still time for Aquilani to raise his game further, which Stanco hopes as "everybody knows how Italy needsa good midfielder", but the onus has instead turned to the nation's younger crop.

Goal.com Italy had further criticisms about an Aquilani switch. "He does not have the personality to conquest the Premier League. I think he will be a new Dossena who wants to come back to Italy after one year because he doesn't have enough."

Talk about a ringing endorsement...

Lucas won't be sold.

Will he?

I hope not.
He will certainly be desperately hurt even at the mere fact that he's being linked with other clubs. I fear his close relationship with Benitez is beyond repair. :-[

Re: Aquilani

From the Echo;

ALBERTO AQUILANI’S hopes of filling Xabi Alonso’s boots at Anfield will rest on the Roma star passing a stringent medical.

Liverpool are confident that a deal can be struck to sign the Italian international midfielder and will step up their efforts to snare him now that Alonso’s move to Real Madrid looks set to be concluded.

But Aquilani’s fitness – or rather the lack of it – could prove a sticking point as the 25-year-old is currently sidelined having undergone surgery on his right ankle back in May.

Rafa Benitez is a big admirer of Aquilani’s technical ability but will need to be convinced that the central midfielder has recovered well enough to be able to withstand the rigours of a Premier League campaign before committing to the transfer.

Aquilani last featured for Roma on March 11 when the Serie A club crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Arsenal and the fact that he made only 14 league appearances last season because of fitness problems is a concern at Anfield.

Despite reports to the contrary, Danish international midfielder Christian Poulsen is not on Liverpool’s radar and no contact has been made with his club Juventus.

As revealed in Monday’s ECHO, Liverpool will receive a basic fee in the region of £30m if Alonso passes his own medical which was taking place in Madrid today.

Real Madrid indicated that they would be willing to meet Liverpool’s asking price for the want away Spanish international during talks held in Barcelona at the weekend and the final elements of the deal were thrashed out yesterday.

Though both clubs have made a commitment to keep the exact financial terms of Alonso’s transfer confidential it is understood that Real have agreed to make additional payments on top of the initial fee on the basis of any success the La Liga outfit has during the first two years of his proposed contract.

Alonso had been due to travel with the rest of the Liverpool squad for tonight’s pre-season friendly against FC Lyn in Oslo but was pulled out of the trip at the last minute after agreement was reached.

Benitez will expect to spend in the region of £16m on Aquilani should he prove his fitness and the Reds boss will then turn his attentions into bolstering other areas of his squad.

Central defensive cover is fast becoming an increasing priority for Benitez with Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel both being affected by injury problems following the departure of stalwart Sami Hyypia at the end of last season.

Skrtel is currently recovering from a hamstring strain suffered in Liverpool’s warm up match against Thailand on July 22 while Agger has again been ruled out of tonight’s game because of a back problem.

While Agger remained on Merseyside to receive further treatment teenage Spanish defender Danny Ayala has been added to the squad and could feature against the Norwegian outfit.

But Benitez will be keen to bring in more experienced cover and Portsmouth’s Sylvain Distin remains one possible target.

I'm not sure about this kid, I'd much rather De Rossi.

I'm hoping to be wrong but he's been injury prone for years now, and seems to be an inferior version of Xabi, not an upgrade.

We don't wanna spunk 16mill on the new Harry Kewell :s

its telling that they'd rather let aquilani go than di rossi.
I think this is about who Rafa wants rather than who they will let go. Rafa has De Rossis best qualities covered in Mascher. De Rossi is a stylish Sissoko in a way. But he doesnt have the passing quality we are looking for (without me arguing that Aquillani has them as I havent seen him enough).

They've got an abundance of talent in midfield and need to capitalise on who is likely to bring in the most money to clear their debts. If we'd gone for Di Rossi I'd wager it'd be the same, it's not like they've said "you can have Aquilani, but not Di Rossi" is it?

Re: Aquilani

weren't arsenal in for di rossi buy now it looks unlikely after it seems aquilani is coming to us.

i suppose its a bit like the masch and alonso debate - we'd miss each player more depending on the context.

aquilani is currently injured though isn't he?

Yeah he's been out since March. I'm not really up for the transfer because I don't want another Kewell situation, I'd rather see us go for someone younger and fitter.

From what I've seen of De Rossi he can do a bit of everything and is an engine of a midfielder, but they want top dollar for him but not Aquilani .....
I actually agree. Simply because to have a chance, we need to hit the ground running. We cant afford a Lucas, Mascherano midfield for very long and have designs on the title.
I love Aquilani, but if he isnt fit NOW then perhaps we need to look somewhere else. Season starts in 2 weeks, not 2 months.

Yeah mate definitely, no room for gambling on this season. I know he's Rafa's prime target and I don't want to go for second best either, but his injury record is a bit of a nightmare to say the least and this league isn't exactly gonna make it easy on him. I'd rather see us pay top dollar for an attacker and then pay for a midfielder if this is how it is.

Heh, no need to fear - according to the article posted earlier, his signing will rest on him passing a stringent medical.

Yeah true... If this is gonna happen and he fails his medical, maybe we should throw big money on someone like Silva and then look closer to home for a relatively young midfielder.
