[article=http://www.dcfc.co.uk/news/article/mcclaren-impressed-by-wisdom-debut-1139027.aspx#ZYjzSAAjWI8LmXBw.99]Steve McClaren hopes Andre Wisdom’s debut display is a sign of things to come from the England Under 21 international defender.
The 20-year-old joined Derby County on a youth loan deal from Premier League Liverpool until the end of the 2013/14 season last week.
Wisdom went straight into McClaren’s line-up at right-back in place of Adam Smith for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham City and he produced an impressive first performance in a Rams shirt.
He went on to collect Derby’s Man of the Match Award for his efforts and Head Coach McClaren was pleased with what he saw from his latest signing.
He said: “I thought Andre was immense for his first game.
“We knew that with Nicola Zigic in the Birmingham side they would have a physical presence in attack, which is why Andre came into the side ahead of Adam Smith.
“He slotted in with no fuss and he looks like he will be a very good player for us.
“Andre can play in a few positions and he’s someone we’ve been aware of from the minute we arrived, so he certainly adds something extra to the defensive unit.”
McClaren has also been impressed with Wisdom’s leadership qualities.
The Liverpool Academy product has captained England’s Under 21 side and McClaren has already seen those qualities in just a few days working with the youngster, both on the pitch and on the training ground.
He added: “He’s a leader as well as a good player and I spoke to a few people last week who said Andre was that type of player and person.
“He’s got a good pedigree and he wants to be a leader, which is a great attitude to have.
“Coming here is going to be a big test for him but he’s started well and we hope it continues.”[/article]
