Am I the only one who still loves Aquilani?

That bit when he fell over against Burnley and Gerrard scored was assist of the century.

*and did count towards his 4 for the season.

suppose we shall have to wait and see' well that's progress I suppose. I think that's all we can hope for. If aquilani is poor this season no one will be left to defend him. I just don't get how you can write off a player who has made nine starts and scored 1 and got 4 assists. It's a terrific record for a player who's been injured for two years. The alonso comparison is a bit unfair being as he had a super first year and then wasn't good the next two years culminating in the club trying to sell him. He turned it round and by the end not one poster didn't love him playing for us. He was one of your favourites so you always backed him and that's good, I think, or hope that you will give Aquilani a chance to shine. He's played nine games so far. Regarding noting players of quality I don't really mind if you think I'm a poor judge of a player, and maybe I do jump the gun a bit (Insua for sure) but I'm not going to not give an opinion on players for fear of being wrong from time to time. Yeah I rated Insua, I also was singing mascherano and ozils praises to name but two before you had even heard of them, so I do get some right too. I'm no KHL obv but I can spot a player who can play.
Anyway. Great to see you say you'll give the lad a chance. Very suprised but fair play. I hope he makes you proud.

I will freely admit that somke of my ire was due to the fact I was SO desperate for him to play, play a lot, and play well, because it was horribly obvious to *everyone* that Lucas/ Masher as a partnership was fucking doomed.

I was confident he'd be a success, not because I saw lots of him (like you purport to have done) but merely because, as I stated at the time, *all* he had to do "was be better than lucas".

And seemingly he failed. He couldn't even shift LUCAS. So, yeah, maybe that was Benitez being mental, but it was still so very, very disappointing.

I also do admit that there were times when he did great things in the matches he did play, but there were also many, many times where I watched him, and winced inwardly at how he seemed to be a good player who had been teleported from another team and materialised into a midfield in which he seemed utterly alien.

You seem to be unable to admit that he was shockingly bad at times, and for every moment of class, he made an error, or was robbed of possession, and looked like he was about to cry.
[/quote]Of course I can see he wasn't great all the time. He was really poor in one game (can't remember which) but he would be wouldn't he? He missed two years of football. I just think there's enough there to give him a full season. As has been said, fitness, heart, stamina etc he might not have it. He might not make it. I don't think he's gutless I think Benitez needed excuses to not play him and I want to see him get opportunities. With cole here I'm not convinced he'll get them. Time will tell.

Wow. Stirring stuff there! Almost brought a tear to my eye.

Still, I suppose we shall have to wait and see, although my concerns stand. Yes, we have had 'elegant' upright passing midfielders in our great teams before: Molby and Alonso to name two (odd how some posters didn't back him so loudly when he struggled), but those two didn't just expect to be *given* space and time to play. The made it. *Earned* it.

As a final note of caution, I should point out that many of the posters cheering so loudly for Aquilani (namely Ass, Oncey, Massive zlatan and Modokay) are among the very worst judges of a footballer's quality on the entire site

You only pointed out the posters that assist your argument. What about Sunny, Squiggles, Dmac and a plethora of other posters who have gotten behind Aqualani for the season ahead. All fine posters but cleverly omitted Brendan.

It's like you *want* him to fail Brendan. You seem to have reinvented yourself as a RAWKesque superfan with your abuse of CP and the appointment of Roy. Why not get behind the players instead of wishing them to fail.

Are you saying Oncey isn't a fine poster?

As for being a "RAWK-esque superfan", yeah, I really fit the bill there, given how much shit I gave Benitez, Lucas et al last season.

In the match stats after the game he was credited with 3 assists. From memory the other one was against Spurs. But maybe the FA flukey assists committee struck it off later.

To be perfectly honest I don't think anyone on here are of the belief he had a great or even good first Season.

It has to be said though that most of our players didn't when it comes to last Season. Even Gerrard was poor.

I'm not sure whether Aquilani will ever be a success at Anfield but I do however reckon he's got the raw materials to make it. A lot of posters on here including Brendan of course has been angry with a player like Lucas and his at times obvious lack of creativity and perhaps skill. You clearly can't say the same about our Aquaman as he's evidently a highly talented footballer who can make things happen.

If Roy believes in him and he can stay well clear of injuries (which is probably the biggest IF) he could very well be like a new signing as I reckon Mark said earlier in this thread.

On a more emotional plan I'd love for him to be a success. The type of player he is could make us into a very attractive looking side.

Oncy amongst others talked him up back when he was still playing the trade in the Serie A and I can easily see why.

Friendly fire can hurt too mate.... it can hurt too.

So what's his excuse for the Rabotnicki game? He's had a full pre-season, he was one of the most experienced players on the pitch, technically miles above the opposition... why was he so quiet?

No excuses really. He's going to have to do better than that.

I was waiting for this. Bad day at the office? I didn't see the game so it is hard to comment. I will say that as a player he thrives on good movement around him. If that isn't there his game is bound to suffer.

He'll be absolutely fine.

Didn't think he was that poor to be honest, he like the rest of the team came more alive in the 2nd half. Some nice interchanges of passing and movement.

With Spearing and Lucas behind him, I thought he drifted a bit to deep at times.

Anyhoo, he will only get better with pre season under his belt. And he at least looks like he isn't carrying an injury like last season.

The quality is there though.

For a moment i really believed that you knew all along that Alonso was a great player, and you were one of his biggest fans on this site when Alonso had two successive poor seasons.

But i had my doubts -> So, Search Query for text "Alonso" by poster "Brendan" made between 600 to 900 days ago (Time when Alonso was struggling for form and fans)

One of the first threads on Search result

I'm finding it quite incredible that the usual suspect(s) are trying to somehow absolve Xabi Alonso of any responsibility for the fact that he has had two seasons in which he has not played consistently well, or contributed enough to the team to merit his continued inclusion.

I like Alonso, he's a very good player, but we need something different. We need more.

We need Barry.

He isn't the answer to all our problems, but he's looked like a far better Premiership midfielder than Xabi for the last two seasons.

That is what you had to say about Xabi Alonso and Gareth Barry. The same Barry who you have slagged off in the recent past and particularly after the world cup.

There are a few other ratings thread where you had been giving Alonso 1, 2, and 4. Some ardent supporter you were. You are now doing the same thing with regards to Rafa. You were saying horrible things about him, yet suddenly Roy can never ever match the high levels that Senor Benitez reached. If Roy happens to do well, i'm sure you will be telling us about how you were one of the first that recognized that Benitez must go.....give me a break.

You somehow seem to have this idea that you are a mega judge of talent and that you would do a better job than the people in charge at this club.

In my brief time here
1. I have not seen you stick your neck out and make a call on a player whose level is somewhat of an unknown to posters. Every body and their dog knows Lucas and Insua are not good first team players. For example, lets take Kelly...call it - lets see what this awesome judge of talent is able to make of what he has seen so far. I'm willing to bet 50 pounds you will get it wrong.
2. You always claim you were right about something, and conveniently forget you were championing the opposite in the recent past.

You are a proper nut job, and it is getting quite tiring to read your posts.

Oh King Julian, what have you done. You've tried to scoop up some Mercury with a fork...

Brendan is not to be critiqued for his lack of consistency...he's not to be taken seriously for all the views...like the rest of us he can't remember what he believed one year ago..

Aquilani was poor last night.

Shame really, because I think he's got to impress Roy to get in the first eleven. It's by no means guaranteed in his case.

Oh well, there's a lot of pre-season to go...
