Am I the only one who still loves Aquilani?

Molby and Alonso to name two (odd how some posters didn't back him so loudly when he struggled), but those two didn't just expect to be *given* space and time to play. The made it. *Earned* it.

For a moment i really believed that you knew all along that Alonso was a great player, and you were one of his biggest fans on this site when Alonso had two successive poor seasons.

But i had my doubts -> So, Search Query for text "Alonso" by poster "Brendan" made between 600 to 900 days ago (Time when Alonso was struggling for form and fans)

One of the first threads on Search result

I'm finding it quite incredible that the usual suspect(s) are trying to somehow absolve Xabi Alonso of any responsibility for the fact that he has had two seasons in which he has not played consistently well, or contributed enough to the team to merit his continued inclusion.

I like Alonso, he's a very good player, but we need something different. We need more.

We need Barry.

He isn't the answer to all our problems, but he's looked like a far better Premiership midfielder than Xabi for the last two seasons.

That is what you had to say about Xabi Alonso and Gareth Barry. The same Barry who you have slagged off in the recent past and particularly after the world cup.

There are a few other ratings thread where you had been giving Alonso 1, 2, and 4. Some ardent supporter you were. You are now doing the same thing with regards to Rafa. You were saying horrible things about him, yet suddenly Roy can never ever match the high levels that Senor Benitez reached. If Roy happens to do well, i'm sure you will be telling us about how you were one of the first that recognized that Benitez must go.....give me a break.

You somehow seem to have this idea that you are a mega judge of talent and that you would do a better job than the people in charge at this club.

In my brief time here
1. I have not seen you stick your neck out and make a call on a player whose level is somewhat of an unknown to posters. Every body and their dog knows Lucas and Insua are not good first team players. For example, lets take Kelly...call it - lets see what this awesome judge of talent is able to make of what he has seen so far. I'm willing to bet 50 pounds you will get it wrong.
2. You always claim you were right about something, and conveniently forget you were championing the opposite in the recent past.

You are a proper nut job, and it is getting quite tiring to read your posts.

To be fair, a footballers career is built on form, age, peaks and troughs. You're talking about a time when Alonso was playing poorly and Barry was playing well. Since then Alonso has come into his own and Barry has looked a shadow of what he was two or three years ago. There's no point being a smart arse cunt about it, players change.

I was not trying to be a smartarse cunt.

I was responding specifically to this part

"odd how some posters didn't back him so loudly when he struggled"

A suggestion that makes me think he was one of the few who backed Alonso even during his worst phase.

This was just the tipping point. My response was a result of reading a series of "i'm right and you are wrong" kinda post from said poster. His main defense for being negative about Roy is the fact (in his mind only) that he is right more often than the rest of the posters.

I have been called a cunt twice on these forums, and i don't think it was deserved on both occasions....annnywho...

Argh you get used to it, the only person who thinks that he 'is' right about everything is Bren, everyone else just either gets angry and tells him to shut up or just nods and lets him have his day in The Lying Rag, knowing that really he's talking through his arse.

Bless. Still, he's one of the best posters on here, even if he can act the bellend.

Don't know about the first time, but you certainly didn't deserve it that time.

IMO, Aquilani doesn't have a position on the field.

He's not that good defensively.
Not brilliant offensively.
Doesn't like to tackle.
Doesn't like to be pressured.
Not a great engine.
Seemingly loves to roam.
More about clever flicks and short passes than an expansive passing game.

I don't know what he is. Talented - yeah. But talent only gets you so far. His fancy flicks, upright stride, and head up playing style is very easy on the eye, but it's not all that effective. As intimidated on this thread before, he seems to be only able to *really play* when there's no one within 3 metres of him (pressing for the ball).

Maybe that's why he was said to be good in Italy, they simply don't press the ball as hard as we see in the Premiership. Probably also why Momo Sissoko looks a very decent player over there too.

Over here, he doesnt get that and has to earn the right to play. Alonso had a similar hurdle tackle after his stellar first year where teams didn't press him as much (as they did the next year). But Xabi adapted his game and also had some defensive steel about him when he wasn't playmaking. Unfortunately, there's no such redeeming quality in Aquilani's game.

I think he's overrated, personally. Not a shite player in terms of talent, but probably will be for this league with the performances he puts him.

He seems to be like a less talented version of Veron.

I don't know, all of what he can do is a rarity in our team, and all of what he can't do isn't. Seems to me he should be able to find a place in many more games, and if he doesn't show he deserves it, then that's that.
