Am I the only one who still loves Aquilani?

Nice post Herr.

Doc's video clip says it all really. Goals, assists, vision, great link up with Gerrard, great touch, great passing....fuck it he's class, im astonished some cant see it. All that in 9 starts. I would love it if he came good LOVE IT!

You've done a good job of defending him Oncy. If he can transfer the standard from those 9 games to 30+ games he will be a resounding success and I expect we'll all love him.
Yup. But if he doesnt it doesnt make him a bad player. I can certainly see why he might not be suited to the physicality of our league. I do hope we give him a chance further forward.
We'll see, ill always be glad we signed him and glad he chose to play for us though.

most can see the class, its the injuries that are the concern. And as always you'll get the people who prefer a workhorse to a showpony, but we NEED creative players like him, especially in such a crucial time in our future development

i really hope he shows what some of us know he's capable of

You're comparison with Modric is an interesting one in my opinion. Very similar builds and both have excellent technique. Modric didn't set the world alight in his first season and look at him now. That type of improvement would do me nicely.

Oh just one more thing i forgot to add.
In Morses player of the season thread which polls all the liverpool fansites, he has (lets not forget in just NINE starts)
2 x First places
2 x Second places
2 x Third places.

SO most liverpool fans had him in the best three players in the team 6 of the 9 times we played.

Shite isnt he.

While I am presently aboard the Aquilani love train, I would suggest that the most significant figure amongst that lot is the 9 league starts. He's gonna have to seriously improve on that this season, and that'll take no small amount of ball growth on his part.
I dont really see how thats fair criticsim Del.
He was fit from 28th October (i know this because it was his first game for us and he was very good in the half he played against Arsenal in the carling cup)
Rafa didnt play him until the 20th January in the league. What can he do about that?
Then finally when he was played he started nine of our last 17 games. He was definately just dropped for 5 games maybe 6. Thats 14 or 15 of our last 17 games that he was eligible for.
How can him getting more balls have changed that. Rafa didnt fancy him (certainly against United, Arsenal, City etc and we pretty much lost all those games so well done Rafa)
Anyway ive done this to death now. Im sorry

He should be very good, but has an awful lot still to prove. Please repeat your Portsmouth performance against Salford this season Alberto, thanks.

I have high hopes for him this season. Obviously he has a lot to prove and some very serious competition for a place in the side but I think the quality is unmistakeably there. Interesting to see what Roy thinks of him and how he chooses to utilise him.

from the evidence produced so far by both sides, this jury is still out until the end of the coming season when hopefully he will be given more chances to prove one way or another, hopefully for the better

I love him, have huge hopes for him and am hoping that with a few more signings i can be excited about this year

Aquilani is an amazing player. You could see our team improve last season when he was there. People riding him off because he was injured last season is just stupid. He was injured for ages and just came to a new league and still impressed. This season will be his season and i cant wait for him to proove all the doubters wrong.

Dont know why you bother to try show the facts to brendan when obviously he is clueless. Benitez was an idiot and rathered play lucas.

Aquilani has received plaudits from all quarters and from some top players & managers in the game, we know he has 'it'. His injury record is a worry but hopefully he's past the worst. I would like nothing more than to see this guy prove himself a massive success - both for us as a team and him as an individual.

Wow. Stirring stuff there! Almost brought a tear to my eye.

Still, I suppose we shall have to wait and see, although my concerns stand. Yes, we have had 'elegant' upright passing midfielders in our great teams before: Molby and Alonso to name two (odd how some posters didn't back him so loudly when he struggled), but those two didn't just expect to be *given* space and time to play. The made it. *Earned* it.

As a final note of caution, I should point out that many of the posters cheering so loudly for Aquilani (namely Ass, Oncey, Massive zlatan and Modokay) are among the very worst judges of a footballer's quality on the entire site

Concerns? What concerns?
He's already a failure in your book. Remember "This will be his last season at Anfield".

You've been right about some players before, I'll give you that. But I think you've jumped the gun on this one.

Btw I feel honoured being mentioned with those posters, well except zlatan 😉.

Well in Oncy. This is what I wanted to see. I've no doubt that when he forced his way into the side last season, we were the better for it. I don't get Bren's needing space thing. Aquilani *does* make space for himself, in fact, it is what he does best. He is always moving into space, never statically waiting for the ball, a paragon of the pass and move philosophy. I'm sure Bren is remembering some match where Aqua got mugged with the ball a few times and has the image of a harried Italian burned into his consciousness, but I don't see that as a huge problem in his game, less so than it was for Alonso, in fact.
'I suppose we shall have to wait and see' well that's progress I suppose. I think that's all we can hope for. If aquilani is poor this season no one will be left to defend him. I just don't get how you can write off a player who has made nine starts and scored 1 and got 4 assists. It's a terrific record for a player who's been injured for two years. The alonso comparison is a bit unfair being as he had a super first year and then wasn't good the next two years culminating in the club trying to sell him. He turned it round and by the end not one poster didn't love him playing for us. He was one of your favourites so you always backed him and that's good, I think, or hope that you will give Aquilani a chance to shine. He's played nine games so far. Regarding noting players of quality I don't really mind if you think I'm a poor judge of a player, and maybe I do jump the gun a bit (Insua for sure) but I'm not going to not give an opinion on players for fear of being wrong from time to time. Yeah I rated Insua, I also was singing mascherano and ozils praises to name but two before you had even heard of them, so I do get some right too. I'm no KHL obv but I can spot a player who can play.
Anyway. Great to see you say you'll give the lad a chance. Very suprised but fair play. I hope he makes you proud.

I reckon he could make a huge difference for us this season, but I just can't see him staying fit.

People seem quick to want fernando to be sold cos he's injured, yet aquilani's record is even worse.
We'd get top whack for Torres, very little for Aqua.

12-13 million had been mooted but i think thats too optimistic.

He'll show the non-believers what he can do this season.

He's fit.

And more importantly now playing under a manager who isn't obsessed with defensive football and tactics.

LoL brendan you make me laugh 🙂 just curious who have i judged thats been SOO SHIT? but anyway i dont care what you think so it makes no difference. As for Modokay or whatever.. who are you? You should be thankful you get a mention next to me 😉

Great talent. Good touch, good vision, good on the ball and ok off the ball. Can pick out a pass, and surely can finish off any attack. Great move.

My kind of player but far away from Rafas kind of player.

Aquilani's not played enough games to make a judgment on his contribution.

The doubt about him is his fitness level.

I will freely admit that somke of my ire was due to the fact I was SO desperate for him to play, play a lot, and play well, because it was horribly obvious to *everyone* that Lucas/ Masher as a partnership was fucking doomed.

I was confident he'd be a success, not because I saw lots of him (like you purport to have done) but merely because, as I stated at the time, *all* he had to do "was be better than lucas".

And seemingly he failed. He couldn't even shift LUCAS. So, yeah, maybe that was Benitez being mental, but it was still so very, very disappointing.

I also do admit that there were times when he did great things in the matches he did play, but there were also many, many times where I watched him, and winced inwardly at how he seemed to be a good player who had been teleported from another team and materialised into a midfield in which he seemed utterly alien.

You seem to be unable to admit that he was shockingly bad at times, and for every moment of class, he made an error, or was robbed of possession, and looked like he was about to cry.
