Am I the only one who still loves Aquilani?

Everyone seems to have given up hope in Aquilani, or his fans are keeping pretty fucking quiet as numerous posters write him off. I saw enough towards the end of last season to be really excited about what he's capable of, and particularly in combination with SG, I saw the beginnings of an understanding between the two. With Joe Cole in town now, we could have some slick play coming our way. He's maybe not the first choice for an away day at the Brittania stadium, but I just think he's quality, and if we can keep him fit with this Aussie quack, he could be crucial for us, a new signing, as it were.

Here's a wee vid that gives us the merest glimpse of what he began to do in a red shirt last season:

Alberto Aquilani - Hero

Nope I like what I saw at the end of last season. I think he needs a full season before being written off as a "disaster".

I just wonder what Hodgson has in mind for him, and where he's going to fit into the team, but no, I haven't written him off.

I'd be very tempted to sell him, sorry. He's very talented and has a great touch but players with an injury record like him rarely seem to change. I'd rather a less flamboyantly talented player who can be relied upon to be available to play.

Nice touch, likes to pick a pass when nobody is anywhere near him, otherwise largely useless

This will be his last season at Anfield

I love him and want him to be a massive success, i just hope the new medical lads can keep him on the pitch

Aqualani is quality but he has to show a lot more consistency.

Well he can only do that by being picked to play.

You're not taking into account that this Aussie Doc has the best record of solving long term injuries since Jesus Christ did his thing.

He's already missed one of our pre-season friendlies because of some kind of injury. I think he's a Kewell.

I'll be chuffed if he gets a good run in the team and proves his doubters (like me) wrong. But if he plays I think there'll be a game in the first 4 or 5 where we get bullied in midfield and Roy will bench him from then on for most games. It says a lot that he makes Cole look like a tough guy.

He's a lover not a fighter.

He'll be grand, you'll see.

Nope, I haven't given up hope, he can be like a new signing this season!

This. He needs a run in the team before judgement can be passed.

He couldn't even get a game ahead of fucking Lucas. That says it all.

That was just Benitez being a stubborn tit. Nothing to do with the lad's ability.

Seriously though, can he play on the left side or right side of a midfield 4 or does he have to be in the centre? The idea of him and Lucas as the middle of a midfield 4 terrifies me to be honest.

He can't play anywhere except in a central position, perhaps slightly advanced of the halfway line. Preferably in a bubble

He's another Benitez signing who need one or more players with him, because he has so many deficiencies to his game

So he can play in a midfield three, at best, but isn't effective enough to be afforded that luxury

It's not really deficiencies to his game though, he's just very lightweight/injury prone, his game seems pretty good. Most players can only play one or two positions, even some of the best in the World, and some of them even need others to compliment them, it's nothing unique nor a sign of a lack of quality.

My point is I don't think he can even play in a midfield 2. He needs to be in a 3.

Yeah I'd agree, I'm just not playing down his quality, he's just clearly another player Rafa didn't do his homework on, because it was pretty clear last season his best position was Gerrard's.

I'm guessing given the injury records between him and Cole (and Gerrard even) that he'll probably be used in home games against lesser opposition and in the absence of Cole, unless Cole does end up on the left.

I Think Rafa's original idea was to have Gerrard and Aquilani playing in front of masher at home- so instead of 2 holding and one attacking. I think we need a good DM to still play that system, and in fairness we don't right now. But in theory-

Torres
Jojo Cole Gerrard
Aquilani
DM

I like him and think he has definite class! Always looking for the ball and has vision to split a defence with a good pass. Judging on his last 8 games (or so) he was a very good. I'd like to think a proper pre season behind him and an 'arm around the shoulder' approach from Roy - we might just see an excellent player.

Then again he could get injured and confound all i've just said 🙁

I think he's class Doc you know that. I know that Anita and Vlad do too. I just can't be arsed defending him against the knobeds.
