A New Striker...

This thread is about back up strikers and yet we are mentioning some expensive talent. None of whom will want to play back up.
I don't want anyone near the SAS partnership so it's gonna be tricky finding a decent player willing to play second fiddle to SAS.

find someone who wouldn't mind competing with them and playing with them

Silver Sean, As the forum's goto person for all matters psychological, I'd like to diagnose a title win to facilitate the anger management.

We've been very lucky this season to only have one major injury at a time.

Aspas is off end of season as the guardian just reported.

"Iago Aspas has admitted he will seek a permanent transfer from Anfield this summer, having made only 13 league appearances since a £7.2m arrival from Celta Vigo. The 26-year-old striker, whose chances have been limited by the outstanding form of Luis Suárez and Daniel Sturridge, has said: "I'm not 20 years old any more, I can't go on loan and explode (in someone else's hands) . I think the best would be to transfer to another club where I can find the best fit for myself and the club."

Its a really good point.

Say we do neglect the more important issues in our side and spent 40 mill on Costa, well you don't sit him on the bench, if you buy a 40 million quid player then he simply has to play, you don't buy him to sit on the bench, very occasionally at most.

It would as i mentioned before be a big 'fuck you' to Sturridge as he would be the one bench warming which would be a ludicrous situation.

It makes no sense to buy Costa, he's not very potent out wide. Not really sure why people keep bringing him up.

If anything, Chelsea will overpay for him. He fits their scheme much better.

Yeah, as mom said why would we want to see anything disrupting SAS? it doesn't get any better, what we are witnessing with them is really special, their partnership will forever be remembered and talked about, they will be the benchmark, it really does make no sense throwing a load of cash to sign Costa or any other elite striker for that matter.

It makes 100% sense to sign an elite striker if he's a fluid player. While Costa isn't bad on the ball by any means, he would largely be wasted out wide. If we sign a Reus/Lacazette type who can play both down the middle and on the wing, then it's a fantastic move.

You make it sound like SAS are magical only between themselves, but I would disagree. You see Sterling in their interplay all the time, and Coutinho and Hendo contribute a ton as well. There's no reason it can't be Sturridge and Reus, or Suarez and Lacazette, and so on. Suarez and Sturridge have tremendous awareness of the play around them when they're on the ball. Any sort of versatile forward is going to have this sort of awareness, and while it won't be seamless, the level of effectiveness should still be there.

I'm not convinced we need to invest heavily in Defence TBH. Sakho is definitely good enough to start for us at any level, and Skrtel has earned that role, and can get the job done. Agger could be sold to raise funds or be kept as depth, and Kolo is strictly depth. We could invest in another body, but I don't think a high value signing is necessary. Johnson is good enough at RB, Enrique can be good enough at LB. Flanagan has shown he's good enough as depth. Ergo, I'd add a 5-10M fullback who can play both sides, someone like Adriano, and say we're set.

As far as midfield goes, we have: Gerrard, Lucas, Allen, Henderson, and possibly Coutinho depending on where he's deployed. We've established that the first 4 are all good enough to play the CM/CDM roles at least as depth. I think we only need to add one more player to that group, a player who can play as both a lone DM and at CM.

So for me, this summer needs to be...
1 Winger
1 Versatile Striker/CAM/Winger
1 Utility Fullback
1 CM/CDM type player

Right now, our roster for next season is...

Defenders:
  1. Flanagan
  2. Sakho
  3. Skrtel
  4. Glen Johnson
  5. Kolo
  6. Jose Enrique

Midfielders(CM/CDM)
  1. Gerrard
  2. Lucas
  3. Allen
  4. Henderson
Attackers(W/ST/CAM)
  1. Suarez
  2. Sturridge
  3. Sterling
  4. Coutinho
Keepers
  1. Mignolet
  2. Jones
Now that's 16. I don't think we need more than 20-22 total players who are of first team ilk.

On The Bubble:
  1. Agger
  2. Borini
  3. Kelly
  4. Luis Alberto
Let's say two of these four factor into the team next season, I think that's a fair assessment. That gives us 18

Add my four and you have the 22 I mentioned earlier.

For comparison, City have 24 players, but they have 3 keepers on their squad, as well as Dedryck Boyata. Chelsea have 23, which includes 3 keepers and Tomas Kalas.

Arsenal have 27, but they have 7 players injured at the moment. That also includes 3 keepers, and players like Miyaichi, and Bendtner.

I'm not buying all this 'Costa will be wasted out wide' stuff.

We often play 2 strikers up top - so having 3 top strikers is an imperative going into a Champions League/Title challenge season.

Rodgers likes his strikers/wide forwards to interchange - just imagine the movement between Suarez/Sturridge/Costa. All could play through the middle or pull wide and interchange at will. It wouldn't be the case of Costa out wide the whole game.

He'd take us to a new level and we'd have a world-class forward line regardless of injuries/suspensions.

Atletico wants to increase his release clause to 41 mill with a contract extension. As a team outside Spain you'll have to pay tax on top of that again.

I dont think we should be spending that sort of money on him regardless.
We're not loaded and need to spend wisely on other parts of the team aswell.

Bless your heart.

Costa is effective out wide. He's not a 30 goals a season player but he's still good.

That said, we're not going to get him. He's too expensive now and he'll probably also want to go somewhere and be the main man like he is now rather than going back to playing a (relatively) thankless supporting role.

He would be the perfect replacement for Suarez IF he goes, I don't think anyone would sanction blowing £40m on him if the SAS partnership is in tact next season.

Ibrahimovic once described his time at Barcelona as something along the lines of them buying a Ferrari and driving it like a Fiat.

That's basically the equivalent of us buying Diego Costa and expecting him to contribute from a wide role.

I just don't see how it's a good fit. There are tons of players out there that would make more sense.

Spag thinks it will be a massive insult to Sturridge if we have another boss forward. Let's buy someone shit so he doesn't get upset, eh? That's the way.

Whirly is owning this thread. Spag is missing the point massively.

Says the poster who wants Lukaku, anyone with half a clue knows that there is no chance of us ever signing Lukaku with Rodgers in charge.

Honestly the fans who would like us to blow our summer budget on Costa are the ones that are way off.

I actually agree with a lot of what Whirly is saying.

And you have the cheek to say i miss the point, feels like im trying to reason with a block of wood, lol.

Untie your knickers and your brain.

Why don't you say something about Irish people now Spag? That's usually your next step, EDL dickhead.

LOL Really? my word!, you soon dragged this debate to the gutter didn't you.

Have a look at Whirly above how to put a point over when disagreeing on a forum.

Go and fuck your sister and chill out Mac, lol.
