Julian Draxler Liverpool bound? Brendan Rodgers spotted at Schalke

By This Is Anfield on December 12, 2013
Brendan Rodgers went on a scouting mission on Wednesday night to look at the possibility of making a bid to sign Schalke’s Julian Draxler in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Rodgers flew to Gelsenkirchen to watch Schalke beat Basel and progress to the last 16 of this season’s Champions League.
The Daily Mail suggest he was at the Veltins-Area to watch 20-year-old midfielder Draxler, who Rodgers is keen to bring to Liverpool as a long term replacement for Steven Gerrard.
Neil Ashton wrote on Thursday:
The 20-year-old German international is drawing interest from clubs across Europe and the midfielder, who plays in the No 10 role, is a long-term target at Anfield.
Draxler got Schalke’s first goal of the night on Wednesday in the 2-0 victory over the Swiss side.
Draxler is very highly thought of in Germany, having already won 10 caps for the German national team.
According to Squawka, Draxler has scored once and created 14 chances for Schalke in his 14 Bundesliga appearances so far this season, has an average pass accuracy of 85%, which fits Rodgers’ build very well, and has won 69% of his duels on the pitch.
However, Draxler is in high demand with the Daily Star reporting on Thursday that Chelsea look set to be both Arsenal and Manchester United to his signature.
Nick Lustig writes in the Daily Star:
According to reports in Germany, Chelsea are seeking to end Draxler’s frustrations by offering out-of-favour winger De Bruyne as part of a deal to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
Any club coming in for Draxler would no doubt be forced to pay up a big sum to Schalke. Draxler signed a new deal in May this year to take his contract with the German side up to 2018.
Schalke currently sit sixth in the Bundesliga, with 24 points from 15 games. They are some 17 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich, and 7 points behind arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund.
With Liverpool having suffered a drop in form in central midfield this season, and Gerrard hitting 33-years-old, Rodgers may well be looking beyond Joe Allen and Lucas Leiva to pick up Gerrard’s pieces.
The Reds skipper is currently sidelined until January with a hamstring problem.

I like this link. I know nothing about the player but he sounds like a bond villain - Sign!

He played mostly as winner last year but has been moved centrally behind the striker this season.

Will Alonso end up signing a new contract at Real Madrid?

Could he be tempted back if not?

I hear ya and I'm not going to patronize you by listing clubs that have gotten good value out of signing older players in recent times, but he or experienced players like him could be a good idea as we try and re-establish ourselves as a top 4 club. Too many 'projects' carries it's own risks too.

Well, you sure have a point there.

The question is whether isn't too injury prone to be a stop gap solution. I don't think he'd take us a step further anymore.

Why would Pogba want to come to us?

Rodgers makes an impression on him.

We offer him wages no one else currently will

He wants to play with Suarez

He wants to play with Gerrard

He wants to play with Coutinho

He's heard a rendition of YNWA that made him like the idea

No one else bids for him in Jan

Miracles happen

Did I mention miracles yet?

And if we can find 2 of them, take them both. In fact, find as many as you can of them and turf out the rest.

I'd like to see a complete restructuring of our midfield and if that means Lucas, Henderson and Allen all have to go then so be it, but only if the replacements are deadly.

EDIT: This was in response to @SummerOnions
A midfielder that can score goals, tackle, pass and run with the ball
Managed to fuck up the quote though, didnt I !!

Rodgers does a mean David Brent impression too.

I hate to be picky, but his first touch was fucking atrocious there. The second was pretty good though.
Seemed poor yes but the ball actually bobbled infront of him, shite Italian pitches. As said it would be a miracle if we signed him but stranger things have happened.

Right, 2 days to go ad our injury list/squad holes are becoming more apparent.

Rakitic (7m?) and Reges (5m, out of contract in the summer) for CM

Salah (7m) seems a done deal to add depth to attacking positions.

That leaves 11m for a shit hot left/right back.

Where did we get 30M to spend?

Tsk. Like I said in the opening post, I'm optimistic.

It's not completely out of the ballpark given we were after Willian/Costa/Mkhetc at the end of the summer.
