More often than not an unexpected team makes the semis. Here's as far back as I can remember, teams making the semis-
1982 - Poland
1986 - Belgium
1990 - all "expected"
1994 - Bulgaria and Sweden
1998 - Croatia
2000 - Korea and Turkey
2006 - Maybe an exception but possibly Portugal overachieved
2010 - Uruguay (could have been Ghana)
Obviously they all had good players but they weren't in lots of predictions of the last 4 before the tournaments.
