Woop woop it's the sound of the Gak-Police

Gakpo’s passing and crossing is definitely one of his best attributes. That right-footed cross after cutting in is lethal:

Basically we’re getting a LWF who is a better crosser than Diaz or Jota, potentially a very good finisher for a winger, but this quality would need to be confirmed in a stronger league. There are aspects of his game that sound concerning, but others promise to work well with someone like Darwin and Salah on the other side.

Personally I like the idea of a big and athletic player who has the ability to get away from the initial challenge with a sharp turn and then the speed and running power to take the ball up the pitch, passing ability and vision to lay it off and hopefully in the end coolness to apply the finish. He might be a nominal winger, but he has attacking qualities that would also fit an Ox role. It will be interesting to see if Klopp would try to work more with his natural tendency to want the ball to feet, attract pressure and create his own shot or against it as Van Gaal did to get him to make more off-the-ball runs and get into better scoring positions closer to the goal. Would be amazing if he somehow managed to do both!

I think most of you will be sold after watching this compilation. It’s staggering output for just half a season:

If he has the right attitude and responds to Klopp & his coaching teams methods - we’ve seen Trent bulk up and everyone has to learn how to press and work hard off the ball in a Klopp team.

I think the conclusions in the last Twitter thread Binny posted sound about right - elite ball striker, meaning he’s got something work working with, possibly held back by current team & tactics, but has worked El yo do if he wants to be a top player.

At £37m it’s worth it - Gakpo & Diaz on the left, Nunez & Jota through the middle, Salah on the right.

That’s some pretty solid options.

I don’t know if he needs to “bulk up” necessarily - look at his goals and assists, which passage of play would benefit from him being bulkier? He is already bigger and stronger than most wingers out there; he might need to adjust to the way defenders tackle in the Premier League and learn to ride challenges better, but that’s more about balance and attitude (and he does seem to have nice balance and fire in his belly).

To use his best qualities I think the #1 priority is to make sure we have at least 2-3 players in the box whenever he has the ball in the crossing position - Hendo or Trent or whoever is playing at RCM would need to start making regular forays into the box. And also teammates need to make runs to drag defenders away and clear the space in front of the penalty area for him to cut in and shoot - or to slide a cute pass to one of the runners as he also likes to do. He seems like a natural fit in this new attack Klopp is building - the more I watch him the less I understand those who predict his failure.

I don't think our current attack is good enough. If he can hit the ground running, it'll definitely help, as our season could be over before the other forwards are back.

Down the line though, I don't see how Nunez, diaz, gakpo and jota all fit in a squad unless one of them develops into something they aren't currently. Not the worst problem to have, but we have far more pressing issues, notably a midfield that can't press.

Hopefully more to come.

As a winger, no - but with his height, he could also play through the centre and while he looks big and strong, a little bit more might make him a bit harder for more physical defenders to shift him off the ball.

Konate would have him for breakfast.

The way I see it, Jota is too brittle to play as a winger any more (where he is naturally facing more tackles than when operating inside the box). So basically we should have Darwin and Jota competing for the CF spot, Gakpo and Diaz for the LW (Diaz can also cover RW in a pinch), and Salah an ever-present on the right (with Doak as backup). What I’m curious to see is whether Klopp will try to find a solution for the #10 position (internally or externally) or stick with 3 CMs at all times.

Another thing to consider - you know how when their team is defending some strikers drift to the wing to receive the ball? This is what Darwin naturally does - drifting to the left - which means Gakpo (or Diaz) won’t need to stay high up the pitch on the LW when we are defending without the ball, which also means we will be able to take advantage of their ability to turn defence into attack and carry the ball forward on the counter. It seems like the pieces are falling naturally together.

The more i see his youtube vids, the more i feel he's more of a Mane replacement.

His game's quite similar too except i think Mane's a more complete player.

So yeah, he's a poor man's Mane.

He's not Ryan Babel because he's clearly better than Ryan, but he aint the dogs bollocks either.

Klopp could also turn him into a CF whom i think could be lethal, but then that donkey Nunez is in the way, so who knows what will happen.

Either way, he's still a far better option to have than to play the Ox or bloody Curtis Jones as a WF.

Also, our coaching staff specialises in breaking players, so don't be worrying about where or how our forwards will fit in.

Cody will definitely have a bed in the injury room specially reserved for him before he arrives.

The book doesnt make Pep Lijnders a bad assistant manager though, and I dont believe for a second that Lijnders is responsible for our signings.

Exactly how it should be. I think Hunter's scouting record for us is very good.

Before he joined us, Mane was a poor man's Mane.

I'm looking forward to Konate and VVD getting on the end of Gakpo's corners. They're absolutely perfect for a big CB to attack.

By the looks of it, his crossing is going to be his USP in the LWF position. Both Nunez and Jota should be pretty excited at some of the opportunities he'll be able to serve up. He seems to be able to efficiently from multiple positions.

Apparently his name pronunciation is similar to Guillit and Van Gaal.

Meaning you need to phlem the H sound a bit.

Hack-po

Woop woop its the sound of the Hak Police.

It's more like Khakpo

It's a really gutteral sound where you kind of make a k and a h noise at the same time

That's why I said a phlegm type sound. It's hard for us English speakers to say.

I'm currently working with some Dutch people, one is called Gert. I still can't get the sound right.

Have we signed him yet ?

Yes - he’s coming on at half time in the Leicester game, wearing a PSV top - then tearing it off “superman style” to show his Liverpool top underneath - there’ll be a specially commissioned rap track playing in the background called “Gakpoo - comin’ at you” - crowd will be bouncing - there’ll be pryotechnics and the Liverpool squad will have a choreographed dance routine to his unveiling!!!

TikTok will explode.

Some of the best times of my life - living on the Korte Prinsengracht, whilst working the illegal casinos in Amsterdam for a year in 1980-81.

Heavy sigh.

Cody Gakpo will be eligible for the Premier League trip to Brentford next Monday. ⁣

However, having only returned to training at the end of last week after Holland’s Nederlands (you uncultured heathens) World Cup quarter-final exit to Argentina, the FA Cup third-round meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on January 7 seems a more realistic option.⁣
