who are the title contenders next season?

Look at Man C, they didn't have CL football when they signed Touré.

Kroos almost signed for Man U until their new manager rejected them.

I actually expect Man U to spend a whole lot of cash in the summer and bring in some top class players. Who? Not sure.

No Kroos didn't almost sign for them. In fact he said the opposite and then United backed off, I expect them to try again next year.

And yes they are having huge problems attracting players and the World Cup is going to be an exacerbating obstacle for them too. Strootman is probable but beyond that they are now talking about Konoplankya ! Many names have already said 'No - not interested'.

I don't believe the United name means much for top players any more (club in disarray after Moyes, not in CL, 7th in the PL and not even in the EL - not even LvG makes up for that lot when everyone can see a massive rebuild is required), those same players will be looking at the task facing them and instead turn their gaze to City / Chelsea / Real / PSG / Real / Bayern and even Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and us.
We are all currently more stable, all in the CL and all far more attractive .. as it stands. The argument then turns to wages - and United really can't afford to go down that path any further, Rooney's pay increase was a massive mistake for them.

And yet it's difficult to see them attracting the quality they need without such wages when they're not in the CL.

Oh dear how sad never mind.

United will still sign big players, they're a massive draw, they're rich and they now have Van Gaal. They might miss out on a couple who want CL football now, but they won't be shopping in Aldi, people are drawing far too many parallels to us. They've only had one shit season, it doesn't suddenly eradicate the last 20 years.

The only reason they might fall short is that they have it all to do with their squad, and maybe, just maybe, Van Gaal might fail and/or alienate a few too many people.

I don't see it though, I reckon they'll at least be back in the thick of challenging to get into the CL.

How excellent would it be, with van gaal not giving a fuck about anything, if he decided he wanted lucas or johnson for top dollar and that was that. Told the existing players bollocks and to shut their mouths as he new best. We flogged them lucas for 25mill hahahaha

Van Gaal is not too bothered about big names. He just believes in his system and wants players who will stick to it. Let's hope they have no decent young players coming through.

That's a pretty big reason though, Mark. Apart from anything else it means they can't afford to say no to Rooney-level wage demands from the players they want to bring in. As for their being rich: their turnover is huge, but so (if the media are to be believed) is the debt burden the Glazers have laid on them. I don't think anyone's saying they'll sink without trace, but I do think it might take them a while to get back to the very top level.

They dont as far as I know. Closest is Wilson who played in the last game of the season.

Richest or 2nd richest club in the world, they can afford it.

They can afford it but how healthy is it? Rooney 300k, RVP 240k. Players will be looking at those sums if they are going to move there. So far Muller, Kroos, Robben, Strotmann have rejected them.
They are apparantly offering Shaw 100k a week which is insane.

I dont think they'll attract top players this season but it will be interesting to see what Van Gaal does. I can see him picking up a few from Feyenoord etc. But they need a lot of players.

It is a big factor, I know, but a few key signings can carry a squad a long way. Hopefully the damage done does set them back, I just think they'll bounce back this year and if they can get RVP firing again..

I think Jesse Lingard is pretty highly-rated though I haven't seen him play. Was on loan to different clubs last season (6 goals in 13 games for Birmingham, 3 in 15 for Brighton). As usual, here's a call out to our resident Championship correspondent for his comments... @Pesam

They've also got a midfielder in their U21s - Andreas Pereira - who looks pretty good and scored a brilliant goal against our U21s when we lost to them 0-1 at Anfield in the playoff semis.

True but I'm keeping my expectations low. Last time I believed that we were gonna win the league we finished 7th.
It's too early to tell really, will be interesting to see how the teams look in August.

Nagging feeling that was our best shot at the title for a few years yet. Chelsea will be better, the Scum will be better, Citeh will buy another £200 million worth of players, Arsenal can fuck off.

Fuck Utd - there's no magic wand solution there.

Spurs - pack of pricks - overrated wank players.

Arsenal - limp wristed fannies.

Chelsea - I'm going to laugh my balls off when that prick of a manager implodes and disappears up his own arse.

Hopefully City will go chasing European glory.

The key for us - don't fucking worry about the League cup - don't fall into the Europa League - don't embarrass ourselves in the CL, but don't fucking worry if we're out early, as long as we qualify for next year.

Why ? I mean we say this every season, so does that mean these teams are getting close to the equivalent of a sporting nirvana or utter perfection ? BEcause we always seem to assume that they will improve. Whereas the reality is somewhat different.

What actually happens is the wheels go round, some players/managers jump on and some off and there are a plethora of mini-dramas throughout the season. Sometimes one team does actually take a step forward (as we did last season) only to regress (in relation to their peers) a season or two later.

What will actually happen is that the new inbound players may improve a team but sometimes also have a negative effect as maybe the wrong players are sold or force a move out of the club. Some managers will lose it and their teams will back-track. All we really know is that by weight of the quality of players in their squads every club will find their niche in the league, some near the top, some will potter around the middle and others stay around the basement.

For the most part we can forecast that just by looking at last season and their squads for this season, it's not often we see a huge improvement/decline and if there is then there is usually a very good reason for it (e.g. a complete change of ownership and/or management as happened at Blackburn, City and ourselves). It's far more difficult to forecast where a club may finish within their peer group though and which teams are going to take that step forward.

actually, lot of things depend upon if we Keep Suarez. He is the fear factor for small Clubs which win us the 'on paper winnable matches' and that is what bring you title imo

I wouldn't worry about Lindgard making a significant contribution for United anytime soon Studsup; he scored 4 in his first game for Birmingham but everything ran his way that day and he was very unimpressive after that game. I didn't see him play for Brighton but don't think he set the world on fire there either.
