I like how players like Gerrard can be properly appreciated in years to come by those who never saw him, simply because there's so much more footage about.

Oh and the pitches are brilliant throughout the year.

Yours?

I'll go with that.

Would be great to be able to see more of the Liddell's and so on. People will have that opportunity with Stevie.

People will assume I'm gonna say nothing's good about modern football... so I'm gonna think of something. Give me a minute or two..

Definitely not. It needs to be an improvement over what happened before.

It's good that you know more about players at the World Cup. It was exciting in the old days as well though when you knew fuck all about them.

The ability to watch games no matter where you are.

The overall quality of the players (and the game) has improved.

Serious question...

Someone made the point in the pub. Has the quality actually improved, or has the physical and athletic aspect just improved?

There seems to be a lot of stupid players who rely on their physical attributes. Has this always been the case?

That's the big question right there SaintGeorge. I would say they've both improved but the physical and athletic aspect has improved by a huge amount compared to skill levels.

Youtube makes any shit player we're linked to look boss and for a fleeting moment, we think he might be.

Well, obviously I'm not old enough to have properly seen games in the past but whenever I watch games, highlights... clips from past eras it all looks a little bit shit compared to what we see nowadays. It's not just the physical conditioning has improved it's the speed of thought, touch and movement. The amount of space and time players used to get to do their thing back in the day.. now it just doesn't exist. Players these days get compared to previous greats but they do the same thing only in a fraction of the time their predecessors took to do it. And you have to say that the sort of skills (tricks etc.) are far beyond the sort of stuff you saw 20-30 years ago.

Ha. This

In a broader sense though, the coverage means you can actually enjoy a lot more football. Growing up people used to talk about Italian football and how amazing it was, but other than highlight shows on Sunday mornings on Ch4 (before the days of Sky Plus) it was difficult to really know and appreciate how other leagues and the players who played in them were really like. I love that now I can follow the Spanish or Italian league as closely as the English league.

The complete fairness of rules, guidelines and regulations such as the FA and Fifa bring to the game..

.. and how much a fair proportional share of the wealth is invested amongst the Lower league clubs and at grass roots level of the game

..er such as.. oh... ???

*coughs*

Coincidentally it seems FIFA are going to put a complete stop to the Emergency Loan system the lower league clubs take advantage of..

'The Daily Telegraph can reveal that after six years during which 2,400 players have moved under the system, the world governing body has ruled that emergency loans breach rules governing transfer windows and will be banned from 2014. In a conciliatory move, however, Fifa has agreed to canvas opinion on whether the transfer-window rules should be amended, something the Football League has long advocated. Fifa said it would conduct research to see if there is support for a “relaxation” of the rules.

Fifa’s ruling surprised the League and the Football Association, which were told that the issue was of concern in Zurich only six weeks ago. League chief operating officer Andy Williamson wrote to clubs this week to inform them of the issue, which has the potential to have a huge impact on the football economy in England. '
