What if in Athens

Crouch had started?

Milan couldn't get near him tonight.

I've always thought if we started Bellers wide left instead of Zendon we'd have won it in 07 but after tonight I wonder if Crouch had played could we have done 2/3 years.

Crouch was good, not fantastic, but I'm not sure that'd make the list of the biggest issues Milan has, and we are so far away from the final of a CL right now that I can't be arsed considering what we could have done better in our last one.

What if Dalglish never left?

What if Heysel didnt happen?

Its in the past, lets keep it there and move forward.

Wouldn't have mattered who started IMO.

So long as Pennant was on the pitch we were always going to be sabotaged. He is the primary reason we didn't win 2 out of 3 and I still feel myself firing up when I remember the way he worked to ruin Stevie's chance in front of goal.

Yep, cause we never talk about things that we can have no bearing on or speak about anything that's happened in the past like Michael Thomas. ???

As far as I'm concerned this is close to the single greatest steal ever inflicted on us. The only thing that begins to make it acceptable to many, IMO, is that we perpetrated a greater steal from the same club 2 years earlier.

I thought Pennant was our best player that day. Also I couldnt understand why Crouch didnt start. Also unlike 2005 we dominated the game and should have won.

It's different. This is a "what if" topic.

Surely you jest.

I don't know how he didn't retire from sheer embarrasment after that match. Milan were so dismissive of him they basically vacated their entire left side. We duly fed it over to him cause he was in acres of space and he contrived to produce ....... what? Absolutely nothing until Stevie got himself in front of goal, screamed at Pennant then pointed at the spot in front of him then did it with both hands. Result? Jermaine decides to lift the ball (from 3 metres) to Gerrards knee height and made it impossibly difficult. I thought Gerrard was going to deck him - the look on his face was unbelievable.

Admittedly my recollection of the game is a bit hazy, and I couldnt bring myself to look at it again.
But I do remember the team in red dominating possession and Pennant seeing a lot of the ball.
We were sorely lacking in the final third though (no Crouch!), and we ended losing to some fluky bullshit goals bouncing of whatshisname's arse.

What ifs are something often discussed.

I personally thought Pennant was rubbish and he missed a great early chance when through.

But it was our complete lack of pace down the left that I hated.

Bellamy deserved to start the game on the left at least after Barca.

What if Barnes had taken the ball to the corner flag when we were 1-0 down with 90 seconds to go rather than try & go for an equaliser?

Pennant always had lots of possession with the ball, he just never knew what to do with it.

How much did we sell him for anyway?

edit : Just checked.

We didnt sell him.

Out of contract in 2009; 6.9 million pissed away.

I'm sure noone regrets it more than Rafa.

Fantastic opportunity to win his second cl here.

Heyho that's football

Re pennant he should have won us that game, he was a waster as per.

We lost that game when Rafa took Masher off, which released Kaka. Had that not happened I think we'd have won it, irrespective of what did or didn't happen elsewhere on the field.

I really hate thinking about that game; because we had the better team and should have won that.

If he'd won 2 Champions Leagues in 3 years he'd have been rightly deified.

The only consolation wsa that we won 2 years earlier when their team was much stronger I suppose.

That is the consolation, but it's not very consoling.

If we'd won those 2 none of the media cunts would have dared get on Rafa's case.

He also might have managed differently, who knows?

Exactly my recollection. Pennant saw tons of the ball because Milan had no respect for him and he failed to do anything of note at all with it.

Crouch and/or Bellamy should have started. Rafa was too caught up on proving points and being stubborn.

I remember at the time he was being given Man of the Match awards left, right and centre. It was absolutely infuriating because he was absolutely rubbish. I was disgusted with him on the night.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly how Rafa ultimately managed to sh!t in his own nest in career terms.

Yep, my feelings exactly. It was the most infuriating performance from any player I've ever witnessed. So many people actually praising him did well to amplify my fury too.

there is no doubt in my mind that we bent over in that final. We almost had an attitude of oh well you have it as we robbed you last time.

We were a better team then than we were when we won it. Crouch should have worried them and Rafa and the players attitude lost us it.
