Watford v Liverpool match thread

Will klopp ever learn. Big 2 weeks ahead as we will struggle to make top with these players.

Yeah it was terrible, Klopp really should be training his players to somehow influence linesmen to recognize two players standing in offside positions, and Mignolet to not instinctively flap at the ball and somewhat improbably strike it onto his own crossbar.

Definitely the kind of flukey situations that we can obviously prepare for.

Quite simply, we are in for a rough time. Horrendous window and the psychology is bad around the club because of it. Coutinho is the one player we have that can control a game.

So the usual, eh? August is too late to play like this or something along those lines. Play fcuking football!

The subs didn't lose us the game. The fact we couldn't keep the ball and resorted to hoofing it back to them did that. Also a bad header for Wini and an bad error from the linesman.

We showed no "game management" at the end. Disappointing.
Taking Firmino and Salah off when we're all over them changed the game and gave them hope.
Substituting the RB in injury time was pointless (though I guess Klopp wanted Gómez for his aerial strength...)

If Klopp cost us this win, it wasn't with his substitutions. I haven't seen a configuration of this team that doesn't leak ugly goals.
I like Gomez but it made zero sense because AA had been superb on the right, nothing got past him all night. Gomez wasn't up to speed and the very first thing that happened is he gave away a FK that led to the corner that ....

Poor sub cost us the win. That and missing a hatful of good chances. Should have had this put to bed well before the final 10-15 mins.

Milner is a good player who gives us experience. I expected he would give us better game management.

Gomez is a CB and we were preparing for an aerial assault. It made sense to me.

I thought Salah and Firmino were tiring. The pace of Mane and Origi on the counter made sense, especially as theoretically Origi's height as set pieces should have helped.

At the end of the day, we conceded to an offside goal so the only thing I can point to is losing the first header at the corner leading up to it.

Wijnaldum was shit for the second and third goals. MOM only concerns the front three as the rest were not very good.

Yeah let's not blame the thing that directly led to us first relinquishing control and then conceding that free kick.

Our attack looked extremely potent in the second half. Salah and Mane, as we thought, look extremely dangerous, and we could have had plenty more goals through the danger they posed. Defensively we were ghastly.

I just want to sit Klopp in a chair and ask him why he took TAA off then.

I'll let him answer. Then I'll pull the lever and watch his eyeballs boil.

Ratings.

Mignolet 5 - I can't really fault him for the goals, but what an erratic performance.

TAA 7 - Unfortunately partly at fault for one of the goals. Fantastic second half with great crosses and set pieces, deserved an assist.

Matip 6 - Average. Nice headed clearances but the defence was all over the place and he's supposed to be the one organising it.

Lovren 6 - Average.

Moreno 5 - Stupid mistakes, poor positioning. Did well going forward at times. The only positive.

Henderson - I'm not gonna rate him. You do it.

Can 7 - Great assist. Worked hard. Can improve defensively but all in all a good performance.

Wijnaldum 5 - Piss poor. Pretty much anonymous, except when he cost us the game and missed clear chances.

Mané 7 - Great goal an attacking threat throughout.

Salah 7 - 2nd half performance redeemed him. Should have had the winning goal and probably another.

Firmino 8 - MOM one goal one assist. Ran the entire game and was our most consistent player.

We're exactly the same team as last season. Can't expect much change in results then.

I'd take last season's results, if I'm honest. 4th would mean a pretty good season.

We need to improve the midfield and defence. If we don't, we can expect what's coming and I think that will be an underwhelming season.

Like you, I like Origi but tonight really sums him up. First game of the season, a real chance to impact the game, but despite the manager showing faith in him after a poor preseason, he hides and utterly fails to impose himself in any way. In a way, he reminds me of Heskey in his last couple of seasons, lacking in confidence, and unwilling to take any kind of responsibility in leading the attack.
