What I like from these highlights is that he seems to be quite fearless when coming off his line – seems to remain calm even when diving in with his hands at the striker's feet (the most stressful and vulnerable situation for a goalkeeper). What I want to see more of is how he deals with crosses, especially given his height – that element could determine whether he will become a top goalkeeper or not.

Reminds me a bit of Neuer/De Gea in that standing up as long as possible style when facing one on ones.
Distribution seems excellent.
The biggest worry is his height but seems to have a good agility and is aggressive.

Ryan claiming a cross. As you can see, quite confident & committed when he does.

Best Believe It: all of that is true, but I wonder about the implied comparison with Mat Ryan. For one thing I'd guess six foot was close to the average in those days (it may even have been a bit above average) and for another the demands on keepers - as on players in most positions - are probably greater nowadays because of higher fitness levels, a more lightweight ball etc.

Come on - seriously ! Clips of him kicking ? We could show 10 of these for Ming .. each match ! It's the cock-ups we want to see !

And I don't think he jumped as high as Hart/Cech/Courtois are standing still 😉

Not sure about those height stats for Hart and Reina.

Reina is surprisingly tall. Have you ever seen Hart standing in the tunnel waiting to come onto the pitch pre-match ? He looks like Snow White with the 10 dwarfs around him. But be my guest to research it and prove me wrong 😉

The height factor can be exaggerated.

Of course at 1.84 he isn't exactly a giant, but he isn't a midget either.

There's loads of tall keepers going around like Steklenberg, Al Habsi, Huerelho Gomes for example ... have the height but not the technical & mental aspects to be come truly top class keepers.

Same goes for strikers ... Peter Crouch is a giant and yet can't head the ball with any conviction & very rarely wins headers in the box ... then you look at someone like Tim Cahill who at 178cm height out jumped the tallest of defenders and scored ridiculous amounts of headers. And ppl would have said no way can he get on the end of a cross he is too small.

FYI - Valdes 183cm, Cassilas 185cm.

Oh yeah, absolutely, and I've never seen Mat Ryan play and am in no way advocating his signing. I was just making the point that there's little point looking at height in isolation.

lol, just wanted to show the distribution side of his game.

And I'm not suggesting for a second he never makes a mistake, all players do. If I had access to clips of his mistakes i would show you but I'm only going with whats out there on the net 😉

We are also linked to 20 year old Iranian attacker, Sardar Azmoun.

He scored a cracking goal tonight for Iran in their 1-0 win over Qatar in the Asian Cup.

Clemence was 'only' six foot. Agility, positioning and anticipation can make up for relative lack of height.

I don't think older comparisons are that relevant, but there's been plenty of good goalkeepers who weren't over 6 foot in the modern game.

The trick is to only keep them for as long as their agility makes up for their lack of reach. And since studies show agility peaks at about 25 for most athletes, you probably don't want a small keeper in his thirties.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the keepers who do hang around until their mid thirties are usually the taller ones.

Our current set of keepers are 1,93 and 1,91 m. Does them fuck all good in commanding their box.

If Ryan has the right mind set, agility and aggression then I don't see a big problem with him being 1,84 m.

That goal scored by Sardar Azmoun was class.

By the way, all you English and European lads, South Korea vs. Australia is coming up in two days. Roopy posted about it in the Asian Cup thread. Starts 9am your time, I think. Might be worth a watch to see how Ryan plays.

I rate him very highly and not because I'm Australian. He's short, sure, 5'11 but has an outstanding leap, agile, appears to be quite commanding of his box, is only 22 and has fantastic distribution. Would suit our style well.
Plus, as the article states, he's just won the award for being the best keeper in the Belgium league for the second year in a row. I'm all about this rumour and would love it to be true. Either way, he won't be staying in Belgium long as he's been strongly linked with PSV.

5ft 11 is midget size for goalkeepers, could struggle in england

Ryan is 6"1? 1,84?

Bit short for a goalkeeper but he looks impressive in those clips.

Nope, he's 5'11 or 181cm, chap.

Anybody else wanna tell Hansern how tall this goalie is?

I think you need to tell someone else than me. So far I've seen 1,81 Wiki, 1,82 Transfermarkt, 1,84 Club Brugge fanpage and 1,82 Club Brugge offal page.
Roopy said 1,84 aswell.

Arright? Not easy iow.
