Tonight's internationals

I would have agreed if Ireland managed to win tonight but you won't get passed us.

Yeah. It will be interesting to see which one of you will clinch the third place.

Austria will finish second and then fuck up in the playoffs against Malta or something.

England will qualify to get to knockout only at World Cup. Don't score enough goals against top teams. I'd give Sturridge a go.

The media descriptions of Welbeck always make me chuckle "Strong, Intelligent, quick to learn. Needs to score more." Oh, ok, so only the most vital bit of a striker's game missing then. He should be fine at international level.

I can barely watch England any more because of the state of general football conversation in this country. It's like we've all made a secret agreement to dumb everything down and just adopt a Talksport approach, be as laddish and tribalist as we possibly can. It's no secret England are a slightly above average side; the team has a slightly above average manager and is populated with mostly slightly above-average players.

Excellent post.

Unlike many Liverpool fans I do like following England, but that very attitude, not only of pundits & the media, but some of my mate's who don't watch Liverpool or any footy then feel qualified to tell me engerland are doing well & should again least get them semi's this year, cos it's 'rooney's' year (or whomever else the media have hung their hat on. Only to then blame the media scapegoat when we plunge out.

The thing that amuses me about England supporters is that you (appear to) have the attitude that you can go anywhere and win. The fact is that last night you got a point from what was always going to be a very tricky away fixture, and now sit just two points off the top of the group, with Montenegro having to go to Wembley. Stop moaning for fucks sake!

I'm quiffing here, because I know nobody else would have mentioned it yet, but I found the most interesting thing about the match was the strange ads that were shown on the electronic hoardings - mostly British ads. There was one for British pork with the slogan "GIVE A FORK ABOUT YOUR PORK" and an odd assortment of alcoholic beverages including "Tequila flavoured beer."

Football isn't covered/spoken about in an intelligent, rational way, which is part of the problem. It's done in this tabloid, Sky Sports way in which England are the best by virtue of the fact we invented the game, the game itself is all about tribalism and passion. I don't know where the responsability lies though; with the press, who want to sensationalise and dumb things down to this laddish, loutish, talksport-esq conversation, or the fans who are quite happy for things to be dumbed down and to have an escape from rational thought into pure passionate tub-thumping.

Suarez in trouble again. Looked like he punched a chilean player.
Uruguay lost btw, 2-0.

Also Nani's foul on Arbeloa was unintentional and shouldn't have been a red, like this challenge:

Hey, he went for the ball.

The thing that drives me crazy about Hodge is that there's no real logic even on his own terms. At least if there was some sense within the context of his own tactics it would be possible to be tolerant, but there's just idiocy. Take late on last night: as usual, all of his players were stuck deep in their own half defending. The ball broke to Young on the left wing, who started sprinting forward. A few teammates, huffing and puffing, started slowly trying to move up and give him some support, but, while he was waiting, rather than make a diagonal run inside before passing back to someone on the left, or playing back to Johnson pushing up on the right, or taking the ball past a player, he passed the ball forward into the area, even though none of his teammates had even caught up level with him, let alone passed him. That's the kind of stunningly witless way of giving away precious possession that Hodgson's England do again and again - especially that match against Italy in the Euros. I mean, if he wants his team to play deep, so be it, but at least get his players to follow the logic through from that! England as a national team just radiates stupidity.

It was indeed a good post except for the "slightly above average manager" bit. Hodgson IMO is actually a poor manager. His record as a no.1 shows some success at getting mediocre teams to outperform when there's no expectation on them, counterbalanced by failure at the highest level (Blackburn when they were a decent side, then ourselves). That suggests to me that he's actually a good coach/no.2 who's not a good leader and should have been satisfied with remaining at that level. McClaren's another in the same mould.

I loved the advert that flashed across the bilboard for "Hooch" alcoholic drink.

It seems it's still 1994 in Montenegro.

Yeah, the fans were mad. I liked it just after they scored, when they let off so many smoke bombs they almost enabled England to use the fog to sneak up the other end and score.

What is his best position?
Has he nailed down the left back spot at Bayern?
He plays more in centre mid for Austria doesn't he?

This is by no means a vintage England crop of players but it is good enough to qualify for major tournaments, you would be foolhardy to expect more than that but nonetheless tubthumping jingoistic tiresome bullshit aside we SHOULD qualify comfortably.

So why is it that we sat so deep second half? Indeed, why is it that we played an unfit Rooney when in truth we looked better without him in the Euros?

The only explanation I can offer is poor management, and poor management due to the fearful caution of the manager. Either by instruction, lack of inspiration or indeed reluctance to be "brave" and change things as Montenegro improved Hodgson showed his true colours last night and it was mainly yellow.

He is too self centred, a few of his interviews when he was manager for us gave me that impression and nothing he has done since has changed my mind. In order to prove to everyone and himself that he's deserved his lofty perch(s) he is constantly watching his own back and playing it safe in the hope everything goes well and he can sit and soak up the adulation from the desperate crowd and the schizoid press.

For me he is more than pragmatic, he is a cynic, a coward.

How can he possibly inspire belief when down he is not actually a believer, his sole raison detre is survival, not glory and certainly not entertainment.

For some managers the ego works in their favour, Mourinho being a prime example, and although it's definitely a neurotic and precarious job all the good managers have got the courage to take the risks, Hodgson is simply not that man.

I dislike him even more than the tepid shit England continue to be.

David started out as a left back at Bayern but also plays in centre mid these days.

I think his best position is still at left back though he's getting better and better in midfield.

That's not fucking racist!!!

Fucking hell.

And now Piara Powar is involved. His organisation have reported English fans for racism to UEFA.

Apparently it's racist because it involves Anton wo was racially abused by Terry. Ergo, all abuse of Anton now has an undercurrent of race. You couldn't fucking make it up.

It's an attention seeking joke.
