😳 Most of the lads on here watch more football matches and certainly know more about the games and players than I do. I'm more of a keyboard warrior (or rather, soldier ).
I agree that the price for Soldado is rather high. I would've like Gomez at the reportedly fee of €15-20m. If we are looking at shorter term targets, there's the likes of Kiessling (only a year older than Soldado and Gomez) that fit the profile - proven in top flight aided with experience in lone striker role etc. who will probably cost a fraction or even half less than the Soldado's release clause - although admittedly the lack of CL football would make it difficult to prise such players away, esp. if their current club are already in it.
Given Sturridge's goal returns, preference for the striker role and how we lined up when both Suarez and Sturridge played together, we also have to consider if we should be using majority of the Suarez cash to bring in an out and out striker, someone more versatile or strengthen other position, such as AM or right wing.
I can see why Soldado is a target
- Proven and experienced as a player in top flight, in lone striker role (in front of the trio of Jonas, Feghouli, Parejo/Piatti), having to cope with the goalscoring burden
-
"Fox in the box"
- Current club not involved in CL
- Despite his age, is capable of at least 2-3 season as a regular, top flight starter (by then Sturridge would, ideally, have flourished into the top striker than Rodgers sees him as capable of)
- Fee will be justified/recouped if his goals/play help us to CL qualification (which is the immediate priority, both for sporting and financial reasons)
- Currently Valencia's top earner at €2m/yr or around €42k per month. (As reference, Gomez is on €5.5m/yr at Fiorentina). When we consider wage + transfer fee, we may see a bigger and clearer picture, in terms of how sound the deal is financially.
The likes of Luis Muriel sure sounds exciting but we are talking about a young lad with slightly over 50 top flight appearances.
This was what Guidolin said last June
I'm not doubting him. In fact, the links, the clips and the articles get me more and more interested in him. However, we have to be weary with regarding to jumping on the bandwagon on starlets. The valuation of €15m is understandable but €20m-25m, 12 to 20 times the €1.5m Udinese paid for him? Simply based on talent? Of the 15 starts last season, he only completed the full game in 3 (inc one where he was subbed off at 89 min) and played more than 75 min in 6. Do we expect him to come over and impress immediately, suddenly turning into a 1st team regular with the burden of the price tag and expectations of filling the void left by a player who started 33 games (playing more than 75 mins in each game) and finished 31 of them with 23 goals and 10 assists
Finally, there's Rodger's latest comment on Suarez
Looking back, the pursuit of Mkhitaryan might have been one of Rodger's tactical plan not only to strengthen the attacking options but also to cope with the potential loss of Suarez and/or add a variety to our play to reduce our dependence on his goals/assists.
In summary, as a point voiced by many members already, use the money and strengthen the squad, esp. in the department where the key player is lost, just like Fiorentina (Ilicic, Joaquin, Gomez - Jovetic), Arsenal (Carzola, Podolski, Giroud - RVP), Napoli (Callejon, Higuain, Mertens -
In a FM world, I would have these names on my shortlist: Erik Lamela, Jefferson Farfan, Alexis Sanchez, Luka Modric, Mathieu Valbuena. The 1st 2's current team aren't in CL, the next 2 are unlikely to be regulars at their respective clubs whereas the last one may want to make a move to a better league.
