We need to play Gerrard on the left and Torres on the right. It's the only way.

yes very funny but I wasn't talking about the forwards/strikers

Why is the assist stat not significant? Surely setting up goals is significant in the scheme of things?
[/quote]

If the assist stat actually measured who set up the goal rather than who touched the ball last then it would be significant.

Dirk got most of his goals playing up front last season, so I don't think you can hold up his return as the benchmark for a wide player.

As for the thread in general, I think spidey has been hard done by - what's he said that is so terrible? That we should look for goalscoring wide players?

We should. They don't have to be consistent scorers, but we need players with goals and spark in 'em. Riera last season didn't really show that he was that sorta player - too often he looked out of his comfort zone when he got near the penalty box. Maybe the confidence gained from playing for a club like Liverpool and being in the national team has helped, we'll see...

There's nothing wrong with wanting goals from out wide, but expecting a winger t score more goals than 80% of the strikers in the league is ridiculous.

I'm not saying it can't happen but it shouldn't be a minimum for the position.

Of the Title winning teams over the past decade, how many of them had a 10goal winger playing for them that season? I haven't a clue but that's the point Spidey is making, as it is our intention to win the league this year.
If some statto can get those facts, it would be appreciated.

Off the top of my head, Ronaldo must account for the last three seasons, prior to that Robben, Duff, Pires, Ljungberg, Giggs and Overmars must have all come close.

In conclusion, it helps to have a wide attacker contributing goals as well as assists. All agreed, surely?

on 6CM one day and already backing me up flan, it's like old times 🙂

There are two kinds of statistics: the kind you look up and the kind you make up - have a guess whos is what

The fact is, to win a league, you need goals from a variety of sources. It doesnt really matter where they come from, as long as they do.

My problem is that Riera can be pedestrian and when you've got Kuyt on the the other, you've got 2 wide players with no variation in their play.

They'll both chip in with goals but we need something different.

touchdowns 🙂

still a squad player. i'd be pleased if he got 6 league goals and played 10 yards further up the pitch also/

Ignoring the nastyness in the thread if you were Rafa you would be looking to set a target of ten goals a season for Riera, its obviously difficult for a wide player but he certainly looks to have the requisite technique to get near that total.

If he had a little more pace he would be a cracking player, sadly he doesn't, but as he is I quite like him and he is IMO our best option on the left.

I think he may well have a good season for us this year.... i hope so anyway...

For the first half of the season we should play him whenever insua starts.

Then when insua has (hopefully) established himself, move Albert forward or use Babel.

I think we have seen everything Riera has to offer. The only issue is whether he can get that consistency to perform to the level he showed in some games.

He also really needs to work on his stamina as 60 mins isn't enough for a starting player every week. We can't afford to have him dying just after half time every week.

I'd prefer better but he certainly did enough last season to warrant another crack at the whip.

in response to that conversation: Benayoun is capable of getting 10 plus goals from a wing spot and Babel if he developed with his attributes should also be capable of getting 10+. Riera I don't think is capable but he could get close to 10 (he wont) but if he did 6 of them would be wonder goals.
