The precedent

Commentator : "Well there may have been a tiny bit of contact, and Mascherano has certainly made the most of it" - what a difference from yesterdays hysterics

Defoe got booked for it and so fa couldnt extend a ban.

A 5 game ban would probably be right but can see the FA doubling that

The difference with that one being the ref 'saw' it and did something about it leaving the FA toothless to do any more about it. Yesterday, the ref saw nothing and Ibramovic didn't bring it to his attention swiftly. Added to the fact that it is Suarez and you can add that up to an 8 match ban.

We better hope CHelsea don't ever have him.

The FA will throw th book at him , 8 game ban, and we'll hate them even more.

4 games would be correct imho. Then he's suspended for the rest of the season.

Were those rules in force in 2007? I'm sure they only introduced the "ref saw it and acted so we can't do anything" rule in the last couple of yrs?

Might be wrong like

It's not even a fucking rule. It's an 'understanding' between the premier league & the fa.

Stupid arse fucking understanding if you ask me.

It'll be however many games there are to end of season when they rule.

Last thing they want is this being talked about at the start of next season

Also I'm struggling to get why punching a player is less serious than a bite, particularly one that didn't get through the shirt

It's a myth the FA can't intervene if the ref''s already acted. They choose not to unless it suits them to do so. As they've shown in the past, they can override these rules in 'exceptional circumstances'.

Yeah, I mentioned that earlier, it's simply an' understanding' between the Premiership & the fa.

The ref dealt with Suarez & Evra at the time of *that* incident ... didn't stop the FA intervening then did it? If they say they did so because he didn't hear the specific words, then why couldn't they intervene in the Defoe incident when (presumably) the ref never saw the actual teeth making contact with flesh?

Incredibly, Defoe will not be sanctioned after Soho Square's compliance department reviewed the incident on video in the light of referee Steve Bennett's match report.
FA chiefs privately admit that Defoe's actions were "not in the spirit of the game", but are bound by FIFA rules on retrospective punishment and cannot impose further penalty.
Mascherano, 22, has hit back at Tottenham head coach Martin Jol for claiming the attack was only a comical "nibble" and had not scarred him.
"My reaction was that this was not a joke," said Mascherano. "I have a mark on my arm and my reaction was not theatrical, like the Spurs coach suggested.
"This whole incident was incredible. Never in my professional career have I witnessed action like this and I still don't understand why the referee has not shown the red card to Defoe.
"When I arrived in England, journalists questioned me about the hard nature of Argentinian football. But I've never recieved a bite there - and I never thought I would receive a bite in the Premier League.
"I had a face to face with Defoe in the game but football is a sport for men, not those who want to bite."
Defoe, who released a statement yesterday to apologise for his actions, was booked for his reaction following Mascherano's clumsy foul, but FA sources admit Bennett made a mistake and should have sent off the Spurs striker.
It is understood Bennett saw Defoe nuzzle Mascherano, but did not see the bite.
He has, though, detailed the mass confrontation that followed in his report. All 20 outfield players made a beeline for Bennett, so both clubs are to be asked for an explanation and could be charged under FA rules.
However, senior sources indicated that the routine sanction of a fine of up to £250,000 is unlikely to be enforced.
Disciplinary bosses feel players on both sides were reacting to the unusual nature of the incident rather than exerting pressure on Bennett. However, the clubs are expected to be warned.
Defoe took steps to move on from the incredible incident, which he claimed was merely "mischievous" after releasing a statement yesterday.
He said: "The referee was standing right over me and if he felt I had done anything bad he would have sent me off.

Charged with violent conduct (3games) but the FA(witch hunt cunts) have said said '3 games is obviously inadequate in this case'.
He's fucked, I can honestly see it dropping in the 5-10 games the arseholes.

He'll sadly get at least 5-6 games.
With Evra, the FA stunned us by handing out a disproportionately long ban. I think many of us expect 6-8 this time. I'm just hoping that they don't stun us again. I'll feel relieved on Wednesday if he's given 6. Not saying that he deserves that long a ban .... its just who he is ... and who they are.
Also, isn't he due an extra ban for the accumulation of yellow cards?

He'll get a 7 game ban because it's an arbitrary, attractive number. He'll then get another couple for pointing out how stupid and inconsistent this punishment is to some south american press over the summer, after saying what he was told to say.
