Other CL matches : R7

You wonder why they signed Kvarastinkier when they have Doue and Barcola who are both better.

So the seedings mean nothing?

I thought 9-16 played 17-24? In the playoffs

This should explain it for you:

So,
9 v 24
10 v 23
11 v 22 etc

We play either
15 v 18
Or
16 v 17

We should seriously consider bringing Bajcetic back from Salzburg. He's not coming off the bench tonight it seems.

Got it.. bit shit.. should be against lowest ranked team left rather than that bollocks.
I dunno it actually makes sense.
Because if 23 plays 24, one of the two shittiest teams get a free pass to the next round basically.
As is, right now 9 plays 24. 9 should be the strongest team and win that game, meaning the 8th placed team will get a tougher game.

No one expected so many big teams to be shit in the CL this season.

If City lose we avoid them in the knockout phase.
But they're not out. They have a home game against Club Brugge next.

Update:

Bayern
Juve
Real
Man C
Update:

Bayern
Juve
Real
Celtic

Bayern play Slovan Bratislava
Juve play Benfica
Real v Brest (H)
Celtic v Villa (H)

I think we'll avoid Bayern and Real, but we could get PSG or Juve.

Yeah but that benefits the playoff teams.

R16 it should be reset again so 1 plays potentially 24 (NFL style)

If they want to lock it in then.. then fine. But still shit.

It is what it is though. Every game is a knock out.

Ok, where we’re at.

City are in 25th, and will qualify if they beat Brugge at home in the last game, with Brugge likely being the team that miss out, as long as PSG, Sporting, Benfica & Stuttgart get at least a draw in their final match.

City can’t finish higher than 19th, which means they can’t play us in R16. We could still theoretically meet in a QF, but only if City scrap into 23rd/24th position and make it through 2 rounds from there - but this is less likely due to their goal difference versus the other teams at 11 points or under - I think 23rd is the lowest they could finish if they win against Brugge (and even that is dependent on us beating PSV by more than they beat Brugge).

They have to win - a draw or loss and they’re out of Europe.

This is good because, it makes it more likely that if they finish, they’ll have 2 difficult games to progress to the SF - against teams, based on this season’s form, that will beat them.

As far as our opponents go - don’t get too stressed about Bayern & RM being in there at the minute - Bayern play Bratislava at home and Real play Brest away - so they’ll likely win those and move out of that group.

What you have yo do is look at teams likely to finish on 13 points - Lille, Brest, Sporting, Feyenoord, Monaco - it’s more likely to be one of those teams - maybe Juventes if the don’t lose to Benfica or PSG/Stuttgart depending on their game against each other.

Dortmund & Leverkusen should win their final matches too - not certain, Dortmund are falling apart at the minute too, so I wouldn’t bet on them making it through a playoff at the minute.

Likely to be a bigger beast at QF stage - Villa, Atalanta or a strong likelihood it’s one of the German teams.

Barca v Atalanta is a fascinating game as Atalanta likely need a win to make top 8 and could open the door for Arsenal or Inter to finish 2nd.

Juve v Benfica has potential impact for us as gas PSG v Stuttgart.

Lille v Feyenoord is one to keep an eye on too - high chance we play one of those 2 teams in R16.

It’s all pretty good, I’d say.

You’re right and I’m sure they will see the error of their ways and change it for next season after top-seeded Liverpool gets drawn with Real Madrid in 1/16, making the mockery of the whole idea of seeding.

It will be scant comfort to us though.

This is the first time I saw Doue play - have to say he stands out even in that talent-studded PSG side. Impressively calm and composed for someone so young with elite technical ability to match.

I mentioned this yesterday - I think UEFA want to maintain some sort of draw after the group stage, rather than create an fixed draw.

It might even be simply because they want to have a flashy event midway through the competition rather than just a draw at the start for the league phase.

Which is fine.. do it for the playoffs.

But the reward for finishing first should be you get the lowest placed in the next round. And again the quarters if you get through. And again semis.

That's what the NFL do.

But UEFA haven't got a clue.

Worth noting that Villa have a great chance of finishing in the Top 8 as well. They need to win at home to Celtic and hope Atalanta don't win at Barca (a draw not enough if Villa win). Other results around them won't then matter (unless Lille beat Feyenoord by 2 goals more than Villa beat Celtic).

Yeah, don’t disagree, but they’ve sort of done that, in that the team that finishes first (or second) is guaranteed to play only teams that finish 15, 16, 17 and 18, whereas the team that finishes 8th can play team that finishes 9, 10, 23 or 24.

So in theory, if the seeding from group stage holds, we should be playing the lowest ranked play off team as opposed to the team in 8th playing the team that finishes just below them.

It just gives a little bit more in terms of unpredictability - which I’m sort of ok with.

There’s a bit of an anomaly this year because City, PSG & Real are further down the league than expected and teams like Lille & Brest are higher than expected - but I expect that to sort itself out more after the final round.

Celtic showing the Scottish league isn’t as laughable as many make out.

Fair play Rodgers.

No, it's still as laughable as everyone make out.

They done well in the CL but their draw was the easiest they could've had for a pot 3 seed.

Does the fact the French league have 3 teams in the top 16 make it less of a farmers league? No. It's still absolutely fucking shite in terms of competitiveness.
