The perception of Rafa (bring popcorn)

I think they did better in the League than they did last year as well.

Because they spent money during the summer.

Di Matteo - 12 league games, 27 points. 2.25 points per game

Benitez - 26 games, 48 points. 1.84 points a game.(Assuming they win their last game)

Both stats are too small a sample size to draw any real conclusions from, but the last argument you could make is that Rafa is the reason they'll qualify for the Champions League.

Those stats are wrong. They only had 24 points after 12 games But I'd agree it's too small a sample size anyway. They probably would have qualified either way, who knows really.

Getting back to the point of the thread...

I think the perception of Rafa will have been improved because of the circumstances he has had to work in this season and of course highlighted by the success of the team last night.

His professional qualities mark him out as a more than competent Manager but the real gain for him will be the recognition he will get for being able to focus and perform in difficult circumstances.

Personal attacks from the likes of Ferguson, derision in the Press, open hostility from club fans to the extent his team couldn't perform at home in the early days because of the poison atmosphere and despite that he and his team have been able to come away not only with CL qualification but also a trophy in a short space of time.

If you need a Manager to work in difficult circumstances and get results he'd have to be high on a list of candidates now, no?

I think there'll be a number of clubs paying him a bit more attention and considering him for open positions.

Should they be ?

Considering he didn't do anything Di Matteo couldn't/ didn't ?

Is there something wrong with football bosses that they can't see that ?

Yes, he's a good manager and he's got a good resume.

However, you seem to ignore that his 'professional qualities' have got him into serious messes with his boards in 3 different clubs (& countries) ... That he was interim is probably why Roman didn't bother firing him when he basically called him an unprofessional git (which he is). So he's perfect for a 2-3 year run with City, where he can lead them to European gold and hopefully keep their noisy neighbors angry.

I don't know but I think you're duty bound to tell them. I'm sure they'd look at your advice earnestly.

I think early on in the thread I said he was needlessly abrasive and often upsets the wrong people. So I don't think I'm ignoring his bad side.

Anyhow, I'm sure the perception of Rafa will have been changed for the better because of what has happened on his return to management in England.

Oh 100% in agreement - and I think he should get a few offers that tickle his fancy. I could see him landing at Man City or even Madrid (a year only unless he really does well as they'll go for Ancelotti I think).

Don't forget they finished 6th in the League the previous season under Di Matteo. At the time of Rafa's appointment they were leaking goals all over the place and looked to be in danger of dropping out of the top 4. It was not a smooth ride, but looking at the big picture, it's clear Rafa changed the downward trajectory of the team into an upward one.

I would have him as Manager of the Year imho..

Given the circumstances he has worked under.. No support from anyone except the players...
The Media have hounded him and so have the fans..

Despite this he has acheived Success.. Better finish than last seasons effort, Champions League Football and a European trophy..

I will now use the acronym LOL. Apologies, amazing how even having him name in a thread title, regardless of the actual point of the thread just turns into a huge dick swinging contest. This is how factions begin. If there is a bloody civil war in hundreds of years over this I can only apologise.

Again, I refer everyone back to the actual THREAD TITLE.

Well, I keep addressing the perception issue 😉 .

Some are still heavily influenced by Sky, Ferguson, the media in general. It's easier to focus on the negatives and lose track of the bigger picture.

But to restate, I think recent history will change the perception and those that wouldn't have considered him will have had their minds changed. I suspect even the media will afford him a grudging respect.

Malaga, if Pelligrini does one maybe. I think he's got a shot at Madrid too. What would the perception of him be then? (staying on topic)

The fact he treats the media with the contempt they deserve means they'll always look for sticks to beat him with. That's because they re pathetic worms who have to fawn and grovel to fill their 24 hour coverage of men getting onto coaches without commenting. Redknapp being in the Championship now must be killing them.

Props or whatever it is the kids say these days.
