That's true up to a point I reckon. Owen had way more than just pace. The best ever though was Fowler.
I agree - people's memories are occasionaly being addled by contempt, that's really unfair on Owen. Yes , pace was a big part of his game. You could say Cisse was just about pace and you would be right. I think Owen was just generally burnt out too soon.

regards

I don't think he would hit double figures at any professional level anymore.

62 English caps.
sixtyfuckingtwo

You think how can Heskey get 62 caps yet so many others have been criminally underrated by England:

Jimmy Adamson 0/0
Clive Allen 5/0
Cliff Bastin 21/12
Steve Bloomer 23/28
Steve Bruce 0/0
Ian Callaghan 4/0
George Camsell 9/18
Jamie Carragher 38/0
Martin Chivers 24/13
Brian Clough 2/0
Andy Cole 15/1
Dixie Dean 16/18
Kerry Dixon 8/4
Lee Dixon 22/1
Duncan Edwards 18/5 (Unfortunately died during the Munich disaster)
Les Ferdinand 17/5
Robbie Fowler 26/7
Jimmy Greaves 57/44
Jimmy Hampson 3/5
Roger Hunt 34/18
Geoff Hurst 49/24
Brian Kidd 2/1
Tommy Lawton 23/22
Matt Le Tissier 8/0
Francis Lee 27/10
Nat Lofthouse 33/30
Terry McDermott 25/3
Steve McManaman 37/3
Joe Mercer 5/0
Jackie Milburn 13/10
Stan Mortensen 25/23
Gary Pallister 22/0
Alan Peacock 6/3
Steve Perryman 1/0
Peter Reid 13/0
Paul Scholes 66/14 ('retired' 8 years ago)
Alan Shearer 63/30
Bill Slater 12/0
Bobby Smith 15/13
Alex Stepney 1/0
Tommy Taylor 19/16 (Unfortunately died during the Munich disaster)
Vic Watson 5/4
Dennis Wilshaw 12/10
Ian Wright 33/9

That's an interesting list for sure. Steve Bruce never got a cap? Wow. Clive Allen only getting 5 seems absurd. The guy was immense for Spurs during the 80s. Didn't he get 50 goals in one season once?

EDIT : - This from Wiki.

Allen's final tally of 49 goals in all competitions that season broke the Spurs club record held by Jimmy Greaves, and remains unbroken. No player associated with any top division club has managed to match or exceed Allen's total of goals in all competitions since then, either.

There were just better players in their position - Lineker & Beardsley for example.

However, the amount of caps Hansen got for Scotland was criminal - 10 more than Charlie Adam currently has.

Any British player with those kind of goalscoring stats nowadays would be fetching +20m, just goes to show the strength in depth England's national team had 20 years ago as StevieM says if he couldn't oust Lineker and Beardsley.

Forgive my ignorance but was Beardsley an out an out striker?

Not an out and out striker from what i've seen and read, but he was selected in the England squads as a forward, they didn't actually bring along that many strikers during that era and they didn't seem to experiment that much preferring to stick with the status quo:

1986 World Cup - Lineker, Beardsley, Hateley, Kerry Dixon
1988 European Championships - Lineker, Beardsley, Hateley
1990 World Cup - Lineker, Beardsley, Bull
1992 European Championships - Lineker, Shearer, Clough, Alan Smith

There isnt much transfer activity overall this summer is there?

yep , it's fucking boring really . even city haven't made a signing .

Have we ever had as quiet a summer as this ? guess there will be at least 1 or 2 more but seems , whether it's choice or not , we're sticking with the majority of this squad .

Would Beardsley be roughly in the same mould as Suarez? I only ask because I was having a chat to a mate the other day about it. I was trying to think of an ex Liverpool player who I could compare him too. Beardsley was about the best I could come up with.

Sorry to go off topic btw.

There are some similarities in Beardsley and Suarez however I would cite Yossi as a closer match to Quasi except the latter was 10 times better.

Didn't Barnes also play upfront - or off a striker - for England?

Liverpool's bid to sign Clint Dempsey could be gazumped by Roma if they cannot agree a fee with Fulham.

Dempsey has been left out of Fulham’s Swiss training camp while he waits for his future to be sorted out.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is desperate to sign Dempsey and has made an enquiry about the American.

Fulham are demanding £10million for Dempsey, who has a year remaining on his Craven Cottage contract, but Liverpool have so far refused to match it.

Roma have been alerted to the stand-off and are now preparing their own bid – ironically with the £12m fee they received from the Reds for striker Fabio Borini.

It is understood Dempsey would prefer to stay in the Premier League with Liverpool, but has not ruled out the prospect of moving abroad.

Roma general manager and former England assistant-manager Franco Baldini is a big fan of Dempsey and has good contacts around Fulham.

And Liverpool’s owners will give Rodgers their full backing in the transfer market by this week by sanctioning a £15m bid for Swansea’s Joe Allen.

The Fenway Sports Group have bowed to Rodgers’ wish that they spend what it takes to trigger a release clause in the Welsh midfielder’s contract.

The new Kop boss has been given a further boost with an assurance that he will have the final say on the future of Daniel Agger, with the Danish defender being targeted by both Manchester City and Barcelona.

Rodgers made Allen his No.1 target when he arrived from Swansea to succeed Kenny Dalglish at the end of May.

Swansea are furious with Liverpool’s approach after allowing Rodgers to move to Anfield on the understanding that he did not return to raid his former club for players. But Rodgers’ inside knowledge of the Welsh club means he knows they will be powerless to keep Allen if his release clause is met.

Liverpool have had an offer of £12.5m rejected by the Swans, with Rodgers also willing to allow midfielder Jonjo Shelvey to move to the Liberty Stadium on a season-long loan.

Now the Merseysiders will take the decision away from new City boss Michael Laudrup by paying the extra money.

Allen will link-up again with Rodgers once he finishes playing for Team GB at the Olympic Games.

There's a rumour that Spurs also bid for him but that he wants to join us.

Wish this Dempsey thing would get a move on. He's not good enough for such a protracted transfer affair. I'm only willing to keep patience with such things of its for a top player.

Oh, and as for those saying they rated Heskey - he's garbage. I remember watching have shooting practice while training at Wigan. I was staggered that someone with that ability had played for England and was earning £40k+ A WEEK! To play footy. I'd have been gutted to have fired in some of the shots he had, and I was recuperating from a torn cruciate and on crutches!

Not exactly. Beardsley played deeper, in behind the CF, with licence to go wherever he pleased. Wonderful wonderful player that we got rid of FAR too soon. Horrible decision.

that story that we're looking to replace agger with williams from swansea can get to fuck .

Besiktas's Portuguese international Ricardo Quaresma, has been linked with a move to the English premier league.

According to various Turkish sports media outlets, Liverpool are preparing an €8 million bid for the flamboyant winger.

The Reds new manager Brendan Rodgers is understood to be a fan of 28 year old Quaresma and has marked him out as a replacement for Dirk Kyut, who moved to Fenerbahce last month.

Quaresma made 38 performances for Besiktas last season and contributed with 7 goals and 11 assists.

About a week ago:

Ricardo Quaresma has launched into a verbal attack at Besiktas, labelling the club's treatment of him 'shameful'.

The Portugal international has been suggested as one of the players the Istanbul giants are keen to sell in the summer as they look to reduce their wage bill after being embroiled in a financial battle.

Quaresma has now revealed that he is training separately from Besiktas' first team and expressed his surprise at the club's handling of his situation.

"The club's approach was wrong, no one has spoken to me," Quaresma told NTV Spor. "I have always tried to have the right approach, but the club did not do the same.

"I have always given my best for the team. The club have embarrassed me. This attitude is shameful, they do not even give me equipment to train. Sometimes, I have to wait 30 minutes to get it."

The 28-year-old winger, who signed for Besiktas in 2010 after an unhappy spell at Inter, has one year left on his contract with the Turkish giants.

Amen to that. Beardo was one of those players who, as well as being top quality individually, helped the whole team play better around him. He should have completed his career with us IMO.

I always Liked Quaresma and thought he was going to be huge .... unfortunately it never happened, due to his attitude or whatever. However for £2M IMO he would definitely be worth a gamble.

The Reds new manager Brendan Rodgers is understood to be a fan of 28 year old Quaresma, who moved to Fenerbahce last month for €2.85 million.

Quaresma made 38 performances for Besiktas last season and contributed with 7 goals and 11 assists.

The dreaded Rashid still probably has at least fifty of the many cases he made for Quaresma gathering dust in some storage space in St Albans.

2 million? That's as risk free as it gets in today's game. Tbh, I always liked him and thought - like you- he'd be great. I was very very wrong, but he could still be a very productive player ...
