Skrtel's replacement?
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is reportedly interested in German international defender Benedikt Howedes and is readying an offer for the adaptable 24 year old as the Anfield manager looks to strengthen his squad.
The newly appointed manager is concerned at the options available at the back, especially at the centre of the Liverpool defence. Whilst Slovakian international Martin Skrtel has been a mainstay, Daniel Agger has been consistently affected by injury concerns and veteran Jamie Carragher looks set to become a bit part player as Rodgers looks to plan for the future.
Howedes is currently with Joachim Low’s squad at the Euro 2012 finals having helped his Schalke side to a third place finish last term, that helped secure a Champions League spot for Huub Stevens side.
The powerfully built defender has represented Schalke since the age of 13 but has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the Veltins-Arena side, with apparent interest from a number of sides including Bavarian giants Bayern Munich.
Stevens faces a fight to keep his best performers this summer having lost Raul and with interest growing in goal machine Klaas-Jan Huntelaar there is a chance that a bidfrom Liverpool for Howedes could well tempt the talented German who can play effectively either as a central defender or on the as a right-back.
Before you get too excited LE Tal it is from caughtoffside.com😵Oh yes please ... Now here's a link I liked. I think it was Rurik who mentioned him last year as an excellent option ... He's class.
Howedes has also been linked with a move to Spain, with Real reportedly keen on bolstering their defence with his services, while Schalke's rivals Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in the 24-year-old.
However, Heldt insists Schalke are looking to build a side capable of challenging for top honours and are not interested in selling their key players.
"I've also read about Real [being interested in Howedes]," he added. "But I'm not aware of anything.
"We want to build, not sell."
He's young, German and looks pretty hard. Whats not to like?
Danny Wilson still in our book?
Yup. That worked out well for all parties, didn't it?
totally agree, though the lad did only play at left back, when he's played CB all his life. He's always looked very poor to be. Not even slightly below standard, he looks terrified when he has the ball and very uncomfortable too.

Anzhi Makhachkala are showing interest in Liverpool's Slovakia defender Martin Skrtel. The 27-year-old has been in talks over extending his Anfield contract. Liverpool are keen on Coventry defender Jordan Willis, 17.
A bidding war with this mob and Man City would be the best outcome if Skrtel wants to leave
Sky Sports understand Newcastle have bid £8million (€10m) for FC Twente star Luuk de Jong.
The Premier League club have long been linked with the Holland international, who went to Euro 2012 but did not play in his nation's disappointing campaign.
Newcastlehave now made their first approach and Sky sources understand Twente are considering the offer as boss Steve McClarenthinks about the options.
The pursuit of De Jong will do little to quash reports Demba Bais set to leave St James' Park this summer and it appears to be the case of Alan Pardewlining up replacements.
It has in the past been reported Twente value De Jong at closer to £12.5m so it remains to be seen whether Newcastle are successful in their initial approach.
Pardew had in January shown interest in the 21-year-old but instead decided to bring in Papiss Cisse from Freiburg.
De Jong has also been linked with Tottenham, Liverpool,Bayern Munichand Borussia Dortmundafter scoring 39 goals in 76 games for Twe

Lille coach Rudi Garcia has confirmed that Newcastle United have made a bid for their France international full-back Mathieu Debuchy.
However, the Ligue 1 outfit have been quick to shun the offer of £4million for the right-back insisting that they must be thinking of a different player.
Newcastle have been on Debuchy's trail for months as they seek a new right-back with Danny Simpson set to leave the club.
Alan Pardew's side have now made their move for Debuchy, who has been particularly impressive for France in their opening two Euro 2012 games.
Debuchy's performances have seen the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Valencia and Inter Milan all linked and the latter were even reported to have lodged a bid last week.
This has seemingly pushed Newcastle into making a bid and they have now lodged a €5million offer (£4million) which looks to fall short of Lille's valuation - which is reported to be nearer £6million.
Speaking to French website 20 minutes, Garcia insisted the club are not looking to sell.
"He is torn between staying with us and playing in the Champions League in our new stadium or going elsewhere," admitted Garcia.
"If he does go and it is a sporting progression, then we will be happy to see him evolve - but we have not planned to replace him."
Garcia quipped that Newcastle must have bid for the wrong player as their offer was nowhere near enough.
"But I do believe that Newcastle have faxed an offer of £4million - but they must have the wrong player," he joked.
Garcia insists that Debuchy's rise to prominence on the back of his European Championship displays has not shocked him.
"No [they haven't surprised me], as he plays with France as he does with us, he plays high and attacks but defensively is also very rigorous and he exudes confidence," said Garcia.
"Without insulting Reveillere and Sagna, he is trying to show he should always be right-back for France."
