Agreed, if we want cover for that role then we should just invest in someone up and coming. Personally I do think we need someone though, even though the position isn't a priority. If Lucas has issues on the back of his injury then we'll need the cover to be better than Spearing. Unless we can get away with Hendo playing the role.

Skrt chasers: City prepare £20million bid for Liverpool's star defender

First big test looms for new boss Rodgers as the champions look for a cheaper alternative to AC Milan's £35m-rated Thiago Silva
John Powell
Brendan Rodgers faces his first major battle as Liverpool boss with Manchester City ready to move for defender Martin Skrtel.
In a classic case of good news bad news for Rodgers, centre-half and Denmark Euro 2012 star Daniel Agger has expressed his desire to extend his Anfield contract.
But the other half of last season’s impressive central defensive partnership, Skrtel, is the focus of serious interest from Roberto Mancini’s title winners.
And that will present a big test for Rodgers, who will meet the defender in an attempt to persuade him to remain with Liverpool.
Skrtel got married at the weekend and has put any question of his future on hold until he returns from his honeymoon in a fortnight.
City though, are preparing a £20million bid, with boss Roberto Mancini settled on the Slovakia defender as his main transfer target after being priced out of a move for Brazil star Thiago Silva.
His Italian club AC Milan want £35m for the 27-year old, and Mancini sees the dependable Skrtel - voted Player of the Year at the Reds last season - as a better bet.

After four years at Anfield, he has also been the subject of interest from moneybags Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.
Yet City have the financial muscle to compete with any club, and the defender certainly hasn’t ruled out a move to the Premier League champions, after admitting his frustration at Liverpool’s eighth-placed finish and failure to reach the Champions League.
The Reds were hoping to persuade Skrtel to pen a new contract, but it seems it is Agger who will be first to extend his current deal, after he returned from Euro 2012 ready to negotiate.
“It’s no secret that I’m happy to be in Liverpool. Otherwise, I would not have been there for six years,” he told sporten.dk.
“I have not yet discussed a new contract but if they come with an offer I will surely sit down and talk with them. If they ask, I will listen.”
Alberto Aquilani will also return to Liverpool after failing to agree terms for his release.
The misfit Italian midfielder wanted a free transfer AND a pay-off to leave Anfield, and understandably, the Reds have baulked at that deal.
Rodgers though, wants rid of the Italy international after his failure to settle in the Premier League.
The new boss will negotiate hard in the coming weeks to get his £80,000-plus a week wages off the books.

I understand why Srktel would leave (wages, CL footy, better chance for medals) ... 20 million is a good price if we really have to sell. If we don't and he won't pout, keep him.

NEWCASTLE UNITED are among a growing number of clubs keeping an eye on Swedish striker John Guidetti's situation at Manchester City.

Guidetti is expected to be given permission to spend a second season out on loan from the Etihad Stadium and the Magpies have emerged as rivals to Sunderland for his signature.

Both North-East clubs had representatives in Holland towards the end of last season to keep an eye on the 20-year-old's performances during a successful stint with Feyenoord.

And his 20 goals in 23 matches, as well as eight assists, have caught the eye of Newcastle, who are waiting to hear when Manchester City will allow him to complete a further loan switch.

Feyenoord have already asked City if they can have Guidetti back to spearhead their Eredivisie campaign next season, but they are well aware of the competition.

He enjoyed his time in Holland, where his coach Ronald Koeman claimed he has the potential to be as good as his more experienced compatriot and former Ajax striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It emerged yesterday there has also been a couple of proposals from Turkey, with Fenerbahce known to have already contacted the player's agent. Besiktas, though, are also keen.

Guidetti said: "If I can't play at Manchester City then I'll have to play somewhere else. I want the chance. I don't want to be a reserve at City, I can't be. I have to be honest with people, I'm not going to lie."

Newcastle are in the hunt for at least one new striker, with the futures of Leon Best and Demba Ba still very much in the air on the back of Peter Lovenkrands' exit.

Twente's Luuk de Jong is the main priority, but Guidetti provides an attractive, cheaper option too.

And it emerged last night that Blackburn Rovers have joined the hunt to sign Best. Rovers, preparing for the Championship next season, are thought to be willing to pay up to £2m.

Id want at least 25m for skrtel if we were going to sell to city.

£20M for Skrtel and I'd bite their hand off and so will Rodgers.

Don't quite believe the rumour to be honest and certainly not the quoted prize.

Like bollocks it's a good price .. WTF are you smoking ! He's in the form of his life and we'd be pushed to get anyone near as good for that. Plus if the likes of Pepe and Suarez see us selling our better players then he won't be the last one out the door.

Citeh have the money so 30M gets us a good replacement and a decent ROI for all the work done with him. Don't like it Mancini ? Then go fuck yourself.

Fine Froggy, I'll accept 30 million too ...

FYI - 20 million for a CB who's just had his best year isn't a bad offer when you can get that lad from Ajax for 10 million, or Howedes for 15 million etc ... There are other options.

Skrtel has had his head turned by City. Believe it.
If we get £20M I won't shed any tears to be honest.

I know a lot of posters on her admire Skrtel to bits but to me he's had one great Season and a few decent ones. No way is he a £20M defender but if Citeh believe he is they can have him for £20M.

Rodgers would probably prefer Agger and Coates anyways in terms of style. So cash in, buy a good, promising defender, for less than half of that sum and move the rest towards key areas where we need to bolster.

Skrtel and £20M won't happen. Skrtel and £10M perhaps.

No one in their right mind would pay over the top for a player with one good Season playing for a team struggling to get fourth.

Then again perhaps Citeh aren't thinking straight so let's take advantage. I don't believe all this for one second.

Is Skrtel about to negotiate a new contract or something?

I think he'll go for similar to Lescott. I'm not buying into all this "I'm happy at Liverpool because I've been here six years" shite. Thats because he was dross for 4 and a half of them and no-one was intrested in him. He's now come off the back of his best season in a red shirt and he's looking to get out.

Ah KHL man, 10 million?? You for real? We paid about six for him and he has gone on to become one of the best in the league and is still in his prime. City paid enormous fee's for Boateng and Lescott..We should be demanding 20million.

I want him to stay but if he does go we'd hardly tempt Hummells would we? Na, thought not.

If all true, then he's not exactly covering himself in glory, no.

could give Kelly and Coates the chance they want. City would pay £30 million though

Whatever we get for Skrtel, be it £20 or even £30 Million, the next team we try to do business with will pull an Andy Carroll on us. Surplus gone.

We need to be looking over £28m for him, he won't be easily replaced and we need to make sure we can use his money to improve us. If they won't offer that much, he can honour his contract.

Both him and Agger are contracted for another 2 years.
Cheers Binny.

Agger has been airing his interest in renewing his contract lately why there could be some interest in talking up some interest still.

I don't know, we'll see. However I'm all for cashing in if £20M is indeed on the table.

cloud cuckoo land.

Carroll and Adam Are true, Downing isnt as he has been playing "well" for several seasons in the league.

That's more like it 😉

The problem is though that our defence is damn good now after having a dodgy season Agger & Skrtel look damn good together (and Skrtel is knocking the ball around as much as anyone - when Carra is not alongside him). I would really not like to get yet another young new CB in and have to start bedding him in.

Citeh paid £22 million for Lescott. We should not sell for a penny less than that. Having said that they paid £18 million for Jo and £32 million for Robinho. I miss the days they were signing Michael Ball and Benjani.
