The Mane man

Now that the collective panic over the Burnley game has somewhat subsided (I hope), let's talk about something positive for a change? So far Mane is exceeding my expectations. We all knew about his pace and good goal-scoring numbers, but I've been pleasantly surprised by 2 things:

1. Interplay with teammates. Those of you who saw the early pre-season games may remember how Mane showed all the same pace and trickery, but looked to be playing almost separately from the rest of the team and therefore not being really effective. This concerned me somewhat, because this exact issue has been an insurmountable obstacle for countless other pacy, powerful wingers (Ryan Babel? Jordan Ibe?). Fast forward to today and Mane, despite being a newcomer, has already formed strong relationships with all the other attacking players on the pitch. You name it: Sturridge, Firmino, Coutinho, Lallana, Clyne – all of them are looking for Mane's runs to pass him the ball or use him as a decoy and he is showing that he can pass as well, not only run. A winger or AM with pace, strength, technique AND game intelligence can be a lethal combination...

2. Energy and desire. It's the 87th minute of a 5:0 cup game against a lower-league opponents and here is Sadio Mane going with full speed and intensity, tracking back and making runs forward, chasing lost causes and annoying opponents. Again, let's see how he keeps it up for the whole season (on a proverbial "cold night in Stoke"), but that's a very good sign. Right now he looks like the motor of this team.

He looks class, that work rate last night was impressive, he was Duracell bunny like

We need another Mane coz God forbid he gets injured and we succumb to another insipid Burnley performance again.

He's been excellent. I said it last night, its already a concern that we look so much better with him starting and so clueless without him, so far.

Definetly need another player in the same mould in the squad. Hopefully Ojo can step up.

A couple of seasons ago the Mancs were said to be interested, loads of people on here ridiculed the idea and I couldn't understand why. Granted he wasn't a big name yet, but every time I saw him in action he looked dangerous. The guy reminds me of Keegan and the effect he had when he came into the side in the 70s. Looking good.

He seemed to be far more greedy, doing a Baros across the pitch at times, when playing for Southampton.
We're seeing none of that bollocks from him since he's been here.
Loving his performances so far.
Looks like the first successful signing of a winger in decades!

Haha! Amazing. I can't wait to the turn around in opinions when he has one "shit" game.
Yeh this is classic SCM exaggeration and hyperbole, however I do think he's a very good player, very happy we've got him after initial scepticism.

He was the signing that I was most excited about, given we badly lacked pace, goals and players who can beat a man in the attacking third. Plus he can actually play wide.

He has looked top class so far, and was badly missed in the Burnley debacle.

Our most important player so far

So do I. A breath of fresh air so far. But two competitive games in...

Nah he's fucking boss. I'm well up for a bit of positive hyperbole. The guy is amazing. 🙂

I must say, I wasn't blown away by this signing when it happened, but he has looked terrific. Aldridge has compared his signing to the signing of Barnes back in the day, and whist that seems wildly optimistic, and he is unlikely to have a fraction of Barnes' impact, it is a nice thought.

He already looks the main man.

I wasn't too excited about him coming but so far he has been the difference in every game I've seen him in.

Our new Gerrard/Suarez/Torres.

I love the way he stands defenders up .. then blows them away. Ibe and Ojo could learn a lot from watching that .... receive ball > run > check (and defenders do too) > turn on the after-burners and leave them for dead. So fucking cool, every time.

Indeed, absolutely love that bonafide pace, it's what Torres used to do, and also what Sturridge used to do, I wish he still would tbh.

Looks like the real deal.

The injection of pace and pwoer can change a game so easily. Just a shame we looked toothless without him.

Bit early for that kind of praise. Looks a hell of a player, but he was at the Saints but didn't do it consistently. If he keeps it up All season then he was a bargain signing.
