The Lovren ultimatum

What? Sahko was 3 yards behind everyone and Clyne lost the run.

I was furious with that goal. Dortmund tried to do something similar moments earlier on the opposite side of the pitch. I was sure they were going to split Moreno with a simple slide rule pass to get in behind us. That phase of play broke down and they worked it right. Clyne is seen waving an extra man over, knowing if there is a 2 on 1 situation he will be split and they will get in behind him. The pass is made, Reus is in, goal.

Yeah, Milner was sat too deep in that play, shadowing Kagawa (I think) who was already covered by Lovren. If Milner had been just a few yards further up, the inside pass couldn't be made without being intercepted. Sakho playing Reus in didn't help.

Swap Sakho with Matip next season.

A Lovren - Matip pairing could be very good.

Lovren was immense last night. After missing that pen in Besiktas to matchwinner yesterday.
Highlights his career turnaround.

Missing a pen is hardly a career low but he definitely did reach some low points last season with some of his mistakes. BUT - his confidence is back and he is our best CB.

The way he's pulled things round shows cojones as well as ability. He still comes across as a bit of a Flash Harry, but I don't care if he can back it up.

Funny old game - the whole street probably heard my abuse at him when he tried that Van Basten type volley ( who on earth does he think he is ), and then 3 minutes later the windows were rattling with his name! The fickle world of a fan encapsulated in 180 seconds!

How are the midfield getting away with so little criticism for the goals?

The defence had fuck all protection because we were going for the win for 90 minutes. Mistakes were made but were done so in a very extreme context which isn't being reflecting in much of the analysis on here.

Can was anonymous and a liability in the first half, and he gave the defence zero protection.

He was a lot more at fault than lovren and sakho

For the second goal we were 5 or 6 against 2 and nearly every man behind the ball for the third when Hummels started his run.
Poor pressing from our midfielders but Sakho were out of sync with the rest of the defence for all 3 goals. Thats not good enough. Regardless of pressing you cant drop deep when the rest hold the line.

I thought Can was excellent in the 2nd half. He was a bit all over the place in the first half, but so was the entire team.

Look where Moreno is for the second goal when the ball is passed 20yds too far forward. Sahko is caught in no mans land - not responsible for the goal

Look how Clyne loses Reus for the third goal, Lovren is pulled out of position too - hardly Sahko's fault.

Sorry but he has his poor games but yesterday wasn't one of them.

It was. Sakho was defensively poor and culpable for at least two goals with his poor positioning. And even his most fervent fans in the media have said it too

Could make a case the full backs (especially Moreno) were too advanced at times. Moreno is liability at times, he's got no football brain at all. It's only his pace that rescues himhalf the time

His positioning is shocking, and I don't think a single game illustrates it better than that. He does have terrific qualities too though. I still believe he can be made into a cracking cb. I could be mad like.

Where's Moreno, and sakho couldn't position himself anywhere useful there. Aubamayang fully exploited the space Moreno afforded him

The fuck is lovren?

He shouldn't be that deep, but it's risky advancing in that position. Better communication needed

Strange that people are blaming Can and Milner for the goals and not Klopp for getting the formation wrong. First half had shades of Istanbul with the Manager's getting their midfield selection wrong.

Probably, but we decided to go for the attack so i won't begrudge the selection. He fixed it and that's all that matters

Everyone could see the midfield was getting dicked. But if the midfield hadn't been getting dicked in the first half then we'd have never won with such an incredible rush, with such an explosion, such tectonic combustion.

It's kinda like how i like being strangled and bummed before I get sucked off.

yeah, my thoughts exactly. If we'd started with Allen then we might never have conceded 2 in 8 minutes but then we'd never have had that epic result.

It was my first European game at Anfield and I agree that the despair and frustration for the first 45-65 minutes made the eventual victory even sweeter

He's got balls massive fucking balls. Lesser men would have thrown in the towel given the circumstances of the first 12-14 months (ish) of his Liverpool career.

He has got alot of heart but no positional awareness. Look at the screenshots posted. He was the last man and he needed to hold the line. At any one point if he had stepped up to join our last men they would have been very offside given the speed they were running at us.

Good defenders are constantly holding their lines. Look at Terry and Kompany - they are constantly looking at their defenders and pushing them up so they will be the last man, then they will follow that line. No teammates should be behind them. Instinctively if they spot a runner they just need to take a step up and it will be called for offside.

Well said.

You'd hope Klopp and his coaching staff would be able to fix Sakho's positional naïveté, but I am not sure.

The first goal is partially him but there's also three players to mark. Stepping forward would have just fixed this. Really schoolboy stuff.

Second goal he lost his man. Didn't stay sufficiently goal side.

Third goal is him, but louvren too. Either he steps forward or Lovren steps back and the problem is solved. They don't seem to have an understanding.

It's incredibly basic. I'm not sure this can be fixed, if he hasn't got it by now...
