BLACKBURN 1991-1992
Dalglish appointed October 1991 by Jack Walker.
Blackburn hit first place in December after eights wins in 11 games.
Top for three months until six defeats puts them seventh.
Two wins in last four matches sees them finish sixth.
Win over Leicester in play-off final secures promotion.

Kenny Dalglish has described Liverpool's current form as the worst run he can remember as a manager, player and supporter.
But the Reds boss would do well to recall a dreadful six-game losing run he oversaw while in charge of Blackburn exactly 20 years ago.

The similarities are striking: Form that crumbled in March, big money signings failing to perform, and back page stories questioning whether 'King Kenny' could still cut it as a manager.
If Dalglish was to reflect on that run amid growing pressure at Liverpool he may find some reassurance at how quickly things can change.
The run ended with a draw, Liverpool's last result. Three years later, his team won the Premier League.
Now Dalglish's Liverpool have a chance to end their bad run at Ewood Park against Blackburn on Tuesday.
Blackburn record goalscorer Simon Garner, who was part of that 1991-92 squad, describes how Dalglish coped during such a bad run of form and what he did to turn it around.

TRAINING AND TACTICS

"He left all the coaching to Ray Harford [his assistant manager] who was a very, very good coach. Kenny would come in with a smile on his face and have a laugh and a joke.
"Every Friday we would have five-a-sides and Kenny would play. We wouldn't stop playing until Kenny had won a game. Kenny is happiest when he is around the training ground with a bunch of footballers.
"We didn't talk about the run in training. We approach every game the same way, training was the same. We carried on as normal.
"Generally, we used to train for the opposition. I remember one game against Charlton and Kenny said to Ray Harford 'we will play a long ball game just for one game as Charlton won't expect it'. We trained to that plan all week and won.
"However we never used to know the team until 2pm on matchday. Kenny wasn't afraid to change a team. Time and again he would come up with a selection you wouldn't have expected."

MAN-MANAGEMENT

"Some players need an arm around their shoulder, some need a telling off and Kenny understood that.
"When you were behind closed doors he could lose his temper. The only time this would happen was after a match when you'd had a bad game. But he wasn't one for throwing tea cups. Most of the time he would encourage you and this didn't change during a bad run.
"He wouldn't get annoyed as long as you worked hard and were giving everything you could give. If you worked your socks off he would understand."

HANDLING THE PRESS

"Kenny would always defend the players to the press and public, like he does with Liverpool now. We appreciated that.
"You don't want to read your manager in the papers saying you were having a bad time. Kenny never let that happen.
"He tried not to let the players feel the pressure and it helped. We were expected to get promoted because of all the money Jack Walker had spent.
"At the back of your mind you were thinking about it, but it wasn't talked about during the run so you didn't dwell on it."

SIGNINGS

"Back then you could sign players until March. He is missing a goalscorer at Liverpool. At Blackburn he was able to go out and buy players to try and get the goals mid season.
"He was happy to sign a player to do a job and get us up a division knowing he would replace them in the summer. You can't make those signings now with the transfer window.
"If he is still in charge in the summer there will be a lot of changes."

TURNING POINT

"We had a great team spirit. I don't think you get that so much nowadays in the Premier League. The game is so different. There are so many foreign players.

"Back then all the players stuck together and got on well, socialised together. I don't think that happens in the modern game.
"In that run it wasn't happening for us but we all thought deep down that we could turn it around.
"Kenny lives for football and I think he will be playing it similar to how he did it at Blackburn in that he will have the belief they are good enough.
"He will be hurting. Liverpool is in his heart. He looks older and tense this season. He looks like he is under pressure but he will try not let that get to the players.
"When you look at their squad they have enough to stop the run and he still has the FA Cup to go for."

Yeah, if we win the FA Cup I expect us to shoot up the league in no time.

Alphabetical order will sort that out.

I do think it's pretty marginal. We seemed to hit a wall a while back, like it was a realisation of everything, poor signings, the Suarez fiasco, everything. Confidence is clearly shattered but we're still trying to attack sides (without much success, admittedly).

I do think there's a fine line at present that a few good signings can rectify, the results are largely narrow. The big issue is that he's spent badly and it's difficult to trust his judgement when he's got it so horribly and expensively wrong.

I don't have a problem with people being critical, I think Fabs and a few others have taken it personally regards having the right to criticise, it's more about the same idiots posting as fast as they can to throw some more negativity at him. That's what's galling. We're all fucked off, we all want success NOW, but most of us are probably feeling that it's difficult to know what to do for the best, while being incredibly frustrated about how the season has fallen apart catastrophically, I know I'm reluctant to want to change for the sake of it. Rafa needed time, Ged needed time and Kenny needs time and support now. We can get out of this but we need to just stick it out for the rest of the season, the season is dead and buried league wise, we're going to continue to drop points until we can try to rectify the issues in the Summer and hopefully as a club, learn from it and take it as motivation to be more determined to have a good season next time round and bounce back with style.

Good post Mark.

The best lesson for me the rest of the league campaign is to NOT take part in a match thread or others when we draw or lose. Understandbly we are all bitterly disapointed about this season, but the abuse and snidey remarks doesnt help at all.

When the season is finished we have to learn from ourmistakes and the see what the best strategy is long term and short term. We all want success, but it will take a bit longer to achieve then over night.

I only takeit personally mark when I'm labelled with the "microwave" "sky generation" etc.then we get insig criticising how I was raised to be a fan because I'm unimpressed with kenny.

Until people start thinking that maybe I have reasons for not being happy with it rather than because I want instant success, I'll take offence

I'm viewing kenny how I view religion.I hope there is something to look forward to after this suit we've gone through, and I have great respect for the people who do believe....but I don't.it's horrible but I don't.I wish I did because then I've got something to look forward to.

I'll add "No matter how much money is spent!"

I called the generation as 'microwave' - not you, or football fans, in particular. We live in crazy times technologically, where everything is advanced and improved within months when it used to take years. When my old man was working as a CFO in Milan back in the day, he oversaw the purchase of a terrabyte for 15 MILLION DOLLARS. Today, it costs 50 dollars. That's 20 years later ... That's what we expect now ... We expect instant gratification, instant results, instant progress - not as fans, but in every facet of life.

I'd happily wait as long as it takes for success, but I won't wait if I don't see the direction we're heading in. We seem to play a bizarre brand if football which seems to be neither attacking nor defensive. It's static. We will continue this run until kenny sees this.

I think we do attack mate. We're just not very good at it

I'm not really interested in debating Kenny - I see your pov, and understand your frustration & worry, and partially share in it too. Just didn't want you take the term I used as a direct insult of you, or anyone on the site. Can't be bothered to fight anymore ... That stuff comes up next week

I think most players lack the necessary intelligence to understand and implement tactics. Apart from simple instructions a 3-year old would understand, anything beyond that is just lost on these muppets. Not all of them mind, lucas, alonso, agger, litmanen, fowler, murphy, they all use their brains on the pitch. But other players I swear just sit through the team talks nodding their heads like a bunch of cunts, then the minute they step onto the pitch they revert to their natural instincts. It's probably why the england team is so shit too.

I mean fucking benitez had to sit our players down and take them through step-by-step video footage of what they were doing. How fucking dumb are these footballers, just imagine your boss doing something similar with you at your work. It's embarrassing.

So I don't think it's anything to do with kenny's tactics. It just takes time and patience for our mentally retarded squad to eventually come around and finally "get it". In the meantime it'd help if we have our only intelligent players (lucas and agger) on the pitch to gradually influence the other retards to adopt the correct tactics.

It's like someone once said. " They can do anything with a ball apart from spelling their own name to sign the fucking thing"

Is that because we've got our back to goal
Maybe it's the reason we're not putting enough players in the box. Committing fewer players so we don't get caught on the break. The team is set out for containment and yet we create and spurn chances. You're right, it's bizarre.

thats a good idea to introduce compulsory spelling tests for them. they think their confidence is low now, if I was Dalglish they'd feel totally worthless and be on the brink of suicide hahahaha

I can't see it improving without sacrificing one or the other. Least not for the quality we'll realistically get

I'm pretty much with Fabio. Personally I don't have faith in Kenny making real progress with us. That's just how I feel, but I really don't think it's the same as wanting him sacked, because that'd be pretty horrible to watch and I wouldn't take any pleasure from it. But from a selfish point of view then yes, I'd prefer to have a new guy in next year I could believe in because it'd be much more enjoyable following us.

Exactly. I'd like to give kenny the chance to prove me wrong though and have 1 more year.

That may change though if we're ritualistically abused on a weekly basis from now til the end of the season though

That's a pretty fair assessment.

It's like someone once said. " They can do anything with a ball apart from spelling their own name to sign the fucking thing"

Dalglish is all pissed off coz of recent results so he goes and watches Manure train. They seemed to be doing everything the same as us so he asks bacon face how he gets that extra edge and he replies 'head games, keep them thinking, keep asking them riddles'. Dalglish says 'what do you mean?' Fergie says - 'I'll show you' so he calls Nani over and says 'Nani son, there's a man alive somewhere - it's not your brother, he's got your dad - who is he?' Nani stands there for a second and says 'Easy boss, it's me'. Good lad says Fergie and they finish the training.

Dalglish comes back to Melwood and the next day he shouts Henderson over and says Jordan, there's a man alive somewhere - it's not your brother, he's got your dad - who is he?' So Henderson just stands there going 'Wha? What you on about?' Dalglish realises he needs some time and so he tells him to think about it and tell him before he goes home. Anyways, at lunch Henderson is thinking about it, getting nowhere so he asks Pepe. Pepe says 'that's fucking easy, it's me'

Henderson is leaving and Dalglish catches up with him and asks if he'd figured it out yet 'Yes boss' says Henderson, 'It's Pepe Reina'. 'No you fucking dickhead', said Dalglish 'It's Nani'.

/old jokes.

Awwww don't blame me - I just picked up a phrase I found amusing. And I thought we ended up friends on sat night.

Sorry if I upset you.
