The hunt for a defender

I like the principle, an older head for a low fee, but probably not the player...

+1 on this.

It's a good idea in principle, but the wrong player. He's one that relied on his electric pace to make up for defensive deficiencies. Now, at 32, that's gone. I'd rather look for an older player that's more positionally aware and more of a defensive leader.

Why in the fuck would we sign Kolo Toure who Arsenal let go about 4 years ago because he was shit then at 27. Now hes 32 and has sat on his arse for 4 years at Manchester Citeh.
Fuck Kolo Toure. He isnt even better than Wisdom.

Find someone else for fuck sake. This is like an OLD Liverpool signing, in the Downing, Carroll mold.

Absolutely spot on... especially the last part. Everyone needs to stop fucking rationalizing the decision just because it would mean we're not signing Williams. That shouldn't be fucking good enough. Kolo Toure is fucking useless... as Andy said, FIND SOMEONE ELSE!

You'd have to do a lot, a lot worse to get a Degen-like signing.

For example, Jovanovic was a Degen-class signing.

That's my fear. Our last few free signings have been disastrous. I hope we dont pay Kolo big wages and have him do fuck all.

I don't think he'll be that bad, though I'm not excited about it.

Anyway, I think people are getting worried for no good reason. He's coming to Liverpool, but signing for Everton.

Then my fear is that he will do a fantastic job for Everton!

I hope we settle all the important signings first before getting him in.

Ha! Well, I think these signings aren't sequential anyway (or at least they shouldn't be), so it's not like if we landed him first, it means we've moved the rest backwards. Signing a free agent is probably going to happen ahead of the rest of the parallel streams since there isn't a transfer fee to be negotiated with the club.

Hangeland would make more sense perhaps as he's a beast in the air, as has been said however not sure he'd come to sit on the bench.

Its nothing like Downing or Carroll. We paid over 50 mill for those two just in transfer fees.
If we sign Toure it will be short term, low wages or pay as you play.

Cameroon international Aurelien Chedjou is looking to leave French side Lille this summer and has opened the door for a possible move to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has been linked with Galatasaray, Newcastle and Liverpool but has stated he will be deciding his future in the next couple of weeks.

"Nothing is done with any club. Yes, I want to move from Lille and get another experience of my life," said Chedjou.

The prospect of playing in the Premier League is one that excites Chedjou.

Asked about the possibility of joining Liverpool to replace the recently retired Jamie Carragher, Chedjou says it would be a great opportunity.

He added: "Liverpool could be great. An enormous club with fantastic fans and the Kop to add."

Not sure where to put this as it's probably not interesting enough to start a new topic on, but when we are talking 'moneyball' approach I believe that we should be looking at 18-year-old LB Riza Durmisi from Brøndby.

He was part of the Danish U17 team that went so close winning the Euro's last year, a team that also included Viktor Fischer, Lasse Vigen (Fulham), Christian Nørgaard (Hamburger SV), Pierre Emile Højbjerg (Bayern Münich), Patrick Olsen (Inter Milan), Zohore (Fiorentina) and a few more good looking talents.

Imo however Durmisi was one of the best players in a team filled with great talents, and now it seems he can walk on a free due to Brøndby not being able to tie him up on a new contract. He's probably on a £500 a week contract or thereabouts and will cost us next to nothing should we snap him up.

He's very fast, very intelligent on the ball with great technique overall with a good shot on him too. Type-wise in the Alves-mould. Could be a major coup for anyone really.

I hope its not another Degen-like signing.

Well, no it's not, because he's played for two top tier clubs for the last 10 years for a reason. I know he's not what he was and I know he's largely been a peripheral figure at City over the last two years, but he was excellent when he first broke through and he's fairly versatile and experienced and as backup, we could do much worse. We'll hopefully have Agger and at least one new centre back, we won't be in Europe either so it's not like he'll be carrying one competition for us to give others a rest. Not every player we sign can be moneyball, or expensive out and out quality.

Do any of your young prospects actually have Danish parents any more? 😉
Far to many of them still to be honest. The Swedes for instance have been far better than us to include, integrate and hone the potential in kids with foreign parents when it comes to football and sports in general (probably overall in society too).

I believe when you look at their U-teams today almost half of them have origins from around the world.

We are still looking for our Zlatan over here, but those types doesn't break through themselves without a system that knows how to address the differences in culture, with an acceptance of each others cultures etc. Things are looking brighter these days but we are still a world class player with foreign background short from the final breakthrough.

Hopefully a packed Parken will sing Riza's name in glee in a few years time, would be amazing on several levels, with a reach far beyond football.

Ok, that was a minor leap away from topic. My apologies. 🙂

No need for any apology. The divisions between topics which we have to apply in here are often artificial and this was a very interesting sidelight on the whole subject. 🙂

I am fine with him being 3rd or 4th choice; but we should not be paying him top wages. Like you said, he has played for 2 top clubs over the past 10 years so I will assume he's paid quite well. IF he's willing to take a huge pay cut or get paid like a 3rd/4th choice CB would then I will no qualms.

This I agree with, he shouldn't be the new Joe Cole, maybe he's not looking for such a big contract, maybe the idea of us paying £8m + wages for Williams has been altered into us paying (say) £4m in wages to Toure (hopefully it's less, but it's just an example), which should be reasonable enough for a back up experienced pro and a more financially sound alternative.

I have to say though, like a few people, I've not seen alot of him for City and the times I have seen him he's not really hit he heights of his earlier years.

Yaya's reportedly unhappy that Kolo looks to be on his bike. Maybe Kolo can persuade him to come to us as well. 😉

Yaya seems to have a bit of a soft spot for us, he's talked us up a few times, and when we played them earlier in the season, he said it was the best game he's been involved in since coming to England. That's some accolade.

Isnt Yaya on about $250k a week, no chance we will be signing him, not until hes about 35 and available on a free transfer cos God told him to play for Liverpool

Certainly not round the waist.

I'm not too keen on this idea. Kolo Touré does look like a bit of a barrel these days and I would prefer us to bring on the likes of Kelly and Wisdom than invest in a has-been, even though Touré can claim a lot of experience.

The echo has reported that we are no longer interested in signing Ashley Williams.
🙂
Kolo Toure or Ashley Williams, who would you choose.
