Of you look at it dispassionately - if I were Mo’s agent, I’d be using the Saudi option to try and get a wage hike and a contract of at least 3 years - the leverage is time running out and Mo can sign a pre-contract.
However, I don’t think any other team in Europe is going to pay Salah what we do and commit to longer than a 3 year contract. He can’t sign a pre-contract with an English club, so there’s really only Bayern (who signed Eze to play there), Real (who have Rodrygo & Guller), Barca (who have Raphina) and PSG (who have Dembele) - I don’t see any of them offering a contract unless they’re being as shallow as doing it to sell in a season.
If you’re Hughes, you’re probably holding firm on offering similar wages and a 2 year contract (where you can move to 3) and using the leverage that he’s settled in Liverpool, guaranteed to play, better penalty taker, etc, etc, etc
I’d say the 2-3 year contract is the wiggle room - the standard approach would likely be, 2 years, or 3 years at slightly less basic wages. I think that’s the easy fix unless Mo is asking for a 5 year contract or something like that.
I think it’s also reasonable to assume that Hughes might try to vary Mo’s basic rate Vs his bonus payments l, like less basic, but opportunity to earn more if he and/or the hit certain targets.
More likely though is the number Mo’s agent is asking for, if he’s using Saudi as leverage.
It’s a case of who blinks first if that’s where we’re at and how far apart the numbers are (if they weren’t far apart, then it’d likely have been done).
I think Mo does want to stay and wants to play CL and win things - he’s not doing that in Saudi.
I think there’s possibly a bit of bluff calling going on - we have to be prepared to let Mo go on a free and he had to be prepared to let his dreams of EPL records and further CL games go as well.
He might kick the can down the road until the summer when he can sign for another English club - City, Utd, Chelsea and possible even Newcastle (if City get away with FFP breaches giving them the opportunity to replicate City’s spend model), could all afford him - Arsenal could likely as well, but he’s not replacing Saka.
I still think it’s getting done in or around Christmas - when we get to the real pointy end.
