The Egyptian King

We did well when he was away for Afcon and then out injured.

The problems came when Mo came back from injury and had to play.
Initially yes - but lets not forget how terrible we were when we had to face Arsenal away - no Mo, or Szobo in that game. I thought Curtis/Macca/Gravy were shocking in that game much like some of the first half against them this season away. Although that midfield combo worked a treat against RM, I don't have 100% trust in it, there is in my view a significant drop in athleticism when Szobo does not play.

I think it’s astonishing the club won’t give him the three years he wants. He’ll start his last season at 35. Even if he drops off in terms of impact on the pitch week in week out, overall his marketabilty and his professionalism and influence on the squad is worth the gamble (that’s if you even call it a gamble)
3 seasons is too much regardless of what he thinks. This week VVD has been outstanding but he has made 3 uncharacteristic errors that I have never seen him do:

1) Southampton - where he lost the ball thinking he was a Matip run
2) RM - just passed it to one of their players
3) City - gave the ball to his mate Kev.

I love the guy - but neither Mo or VVD have 3 years in them, max 2 seasons - FSG are correct if they have issues with 3 year contracts. The physical conditioning may look great - but there are things in one body like the damn ligaments and shit we cannot see and also the bones under all that muscle and skin that age - nothing is gonna stop that, those of us over 32 years must have all felt it when things start aching and that extra spring in our steps vanishes for no apparent reason other than age.

Mohamed Salah open to one-year Liverpool contract extension, frustrated at club’s handling of talks

Mohamed Salah would accept a new one-year contract at Liverpool but is growing increasingly exasperated at the club’s handling of negotiations.

The striker is still waiting for Liverpool to reveal its position in relation to the length and terms of any potential deal, amid interest from top European clubs in signing him on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The Egypt international has not entered any discussions with other clubs as his contract does not permit him to do so, but that will change from January 1, when Salah is entitled to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club outside England.

The Athletic has spoken to multiple sources with knowledge of the current situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity owing to the confidentiality of the talks. Liverpool declined to comment.

A report in the French publication L’Equipe on Sunday linked Salah with a move to Paris Saint Germain, but the Ligue 1 champions have denied they are in talks.

Liverpool have consistently maintained that discussions with Salah, through his representative Ramy Abbas, have been positive and are still ongoing. But Salah is frustrated at the pace of talks and unconvinced the club will meet his expectations on terms.

After helping Liverpool defeat Southampton last month, he said he was “probably more out than in” and admitted he was “disappointed” that a formal contract offer had not been made.

‘I'm more out than in’: What Salah's latest comments mean for his Liverpool future

The forward’s priority is to extend his stay at Anfield and he is not agitating to leave. Even in that interview after the Southampton match, he was at pains to stress his “love” for Liverpool.

Yet he also believes he is amongst the best players in the world and the terms of any new deal should reflect that status, and his performance levels this season.

Salah has scored 13 goals in Liverpool’s 20 games across all competitions this season, delivering 11 assists. His latest contribution was to set up Cody Gakpo for the opening goal against Manchester City on Sunday, and then score a second-half penalty that sealed a 2-0 win.

That result sent Liverpool nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table, and 11 ahead of City, a club that has pipped them to the title twice on the final day of the season twice since Salah arrived at Anfield in 2017.

His current contract makes him the highest paid player in Liverpool’s history. In 2022, he agreed a three-year contract extension that was widely reported to be worth £350,000-a-week in basic salary, but Salah earns well in excess of that, particularly once performance-related bonuses are taken into account.

Salah believes he is approaching his peak and will maintain his levels. He is desperate to win the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool this season.

He will be 33 next summer but he does not think age will be a barrier to also achieving his ambition of winning the Ballon d’Or. Until this year, when it was awarded to City midfielder Rodri at the age of 28, it had not been won by a player under the age of 31 since 2015 when Lionel Messi, at the same age as Rodri, won the title.

Until the start of this season, Salah was not approached by Liverpool to extend his stay at the club at any point since 2022, though he would have been interested in signing a new deal.

In the summer of 2023, Liverpool turned down a £150m bid from Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad.

The club has handled these negotiations extremely poor

How do we know this. Maybe Salah's agent is pushing too hard. Maybe we are being great negotiators. Who knows.

I think Salah is handling it really poorly. It's not the Liverpool way to handle negotiations so publicly like this. No other player is doing this, and it makes it even harder for the club to agree terms, at the risk of showing other players that by using the media in the same way, they'll be able to cause a lot of hassle to get more $.

Easy to say when all we are hearing is from one side of the negotiations.

Secondly, why can't he just keep his mouth shut and carry on and let his agent negotiate. We're on an incredible run, top of the league and champions league and he has to go shooting his mouth of.

Don't see Virgil gobbing off, don't see Trent moaning about his contract.

Yes, Well said, EXACTLY.

I would say responsibility lies not always with the club but the fact there are 3 player’s at same time doesn’t help.I have no issue with player’s updating us on where it’s at because we are assuming the club has offered a reasonable whatever that is do we know for sure?

Did Virgil not pride an update a few days ago? It might not have been as open as Mo but still no contract yet.

Well, both of them have 29 days left before they can sign a pre agreement with another club, thats poor. Both have said they want to stay. At some point I’d be fed up as well.

I’d go all in on this is what has happened.

Mo’s agent received an offer from Saudi for like £200 million. Sold the idea to Mo that’s what they could get out of Liverpool because of what a replacement would cost in fees and wages. Went into negotiations with that firm standpoint.

The club laughed. Went we know there will be a drop off at some point, the data is there to support it. We know you won’t get that from a European club. Our counter offer is £250k/week plus £50k a goal, £25k assist plus a mill for every trophy.

Mo said he doesn’t really want to Saudi and nobody else will better our offer and now thinks he wants the status quo for a year to see what other offers may appear.

If he continues playing as he is, a goal and assist in every game, he can mouth off as much as he wants no problem. If anything, that seems to be taking abit of pressure off the team; with him sharing the headlines.

Id just like it sorted please

Id imagine psg would happily pay stupid money, especially after mbappe left

It all seems rather amateurish; potentially from both sides

Then why sheepishly ask for a year extension?

Alas Overpaying on this contract will lead to significant wage inflation for us. I like that they are being tough negotiators because we see what happens to other clubs when they overpay players.

I think he's forcing the clubs hand. He's been vocal how nothings on the table from the club, so now he's like "see? They won't even give me a year? Fsg are bad bellends, right lads?"

Add in what I expect to be a quiet January, the more vocal supporters might get rabid with the thought we won't even offer a year for arguably one of the best in the world, regardless of age.

The club's playing it's cards too close to it's chest, and that allowing salahs agent to control the narrative

Slot has enjoyed a smooth start to his Liverpool career, but this issue is an unnecessary distraction from what is shaping up to be a genuine shot at the title. While it hasn’t affected performances on the pitch, having to address the media every few days must be incredibly frustrating. It also raises serious challenges for recruitment—how can you plan effectively when there’s so much uncertainty over who’s staying and who’s leaving, especially in key positions?

Another factor to consider is City’s current vulnerability. While they tend to recover quickly, there’s a good chance they won’t be as dominant next season either. Our current squad has the quality to take advantage of this. The club must decide whether now is the right time to start transitioning away from certain players, but I’d argue it isn’t. While Klopp has been criticised in the past for holding onto players too long, we’re not at that point with anyone in this group.

This team has the potential to not only secure this year’s title but also set themselves up for next season. Many of City’s experienced players—those who’ve been central to their success—are in decline and will soon need replacing, which could destabilise them. We, on the other hand, can remain highly competitive for at least two more years. Klopp never really had the chance to face a City side in transition, but now the opportunity is there. To fail to seize it would be a mistake. The phrase “make hay while The Lying Rag shines” feels particularly apt.

Maybe, and this is a shot in the dark, Mo wants a one year extension so he has the power in his hands next year when he might think he'll be ready for a move to Saudi or wherever, and the club would prefer a 2 year deal so they have power in terms of resale in a year's time. Is this madness? Have we had it the wrong way around the whole time?

I like your thinking.

More madness, if you think that player performance is always at its highest in the year the contract extension is to be signed until signed. Therefore the longer the negotiations take the more the showcase not only for current club but for the potential suitor club as well.

And rightly so, because the club speaking out publicly is a trap that Abbas will use yo turn up the heat and protray the club as ineffective - and it works, you just have to read a post by Binomial to see how easy it is to whip some supporters into a rage frenzy.

I said before, one of the hardest things in negotiations is to say nothing - because the minute you start talking you give stuff away.

Right now we know absolutely nothing from the club side - but we know both Salah & Virg want to stay, therefore we know there’s a deal to be done. We also now know that Salah views himself as one of the best players in the world and wants to be paid as such.

I think you can deduce from that why there’s a problem with the contract - that sounds like he’s looking for more money and club are standing firm on not increasing - because he’s already our best paid player and one of the best paid in the world.

The fact they haven’t broken off negotiations likely means that the two sides aren’t too far apart that a deal will be impossible to land.

If it’s true that Mo’s team are now floating he’ll accept a one year extension on current terms, then that for me means they’ve completely overcooked their position and the club’s silence has backed them in to a corner.

It also betrays the fact that Mo’s priority, despite what Abbas will have tried to get out of the club, is not more money or a long contract, but staying.

Again, if it’s true, it absolutely boxes Mo in, because if he subsequently turned down a contract on the same terms, then it wouldn’t really follow the “I want to stay” narrative they’ve been pushing.

It might also suggest what Ive theorised elsewhere - that there aren’t any or many offers out there that’ll match ours outside of a Saudi one.

Now, if he would accept a one year extension on current terms and we said no - then I think that would be a massive mistake on our part - but a rolling contract on current terms would be a great result.

Although… none of us really know.

Maybe we've offered a 3 year deal.and be only wants a 2 year deal.

That'd fuck DBs thinking right up.

He might kick the can down the road until the summer when he can sign for another English club - City, Utd, Chelsea and possible even Newcastle (if City get away with FFP breaches giving them the opportunity to replicate City’s spend model), could all afford him - Arsenal could likely as well, but he’s not replacing Saka.

I still think it’s getting done in or around Christmas - when we get to the real pointy end.
I really don't think Mo. would want to (or will) sign for another PL team and sully his reputation and image at Anfield.
