...between winning the Champions League and finishing 2nd? 37m sterling (winners get 93m and runners-up get 57m).

Might put a bit of a dent into their summer transfer kitty eh?

Where was all this money when we were winning it and finishing runners up in two finals in three years?

I just read an article that UEFA give the winners 9M whereas the runners-up get 5M.

Where do those figures come from?

Christ, that wont even pay off the interest on their loans. Shame they never got to charge for their 'Quadruple' picture with all 4 trophies. That would have filled the hole.

It's probably the accumulated monies from the gate receipts, prize money, estimated merchandise sales and the future world club championship fixtures (with the prize money that brings).

Not forgetting sales of pictures with the CL trophy. Never mind eh.

Where have you had those figures from Buddha? I'm sure when we won it I read that we got around 30mill in total prize money.

Heard it discussed on the radio when driving today - can't remember whether it was 5 Live or Talk Sport (hardly the most credible source I know).

It's stayed with me all day due to the huge difference in figures involved.

I hope it's not wrong.

Well, figures I have heard banded around year-on-year are £10 million to qualify for the group stages, £30 million if you get out of the group stage, I thought we took around £45 million in 2005. So where they get £90 plus million from, god knows. Unless Unicef are going to throw a few quid to Pep and the gang.

This is from the Times....

The richest pot in the game awaits Manchester United if they can win the Champions League final tonight in Rome. A report last night claimed that the most glamorous competition in club football had bucked the trend of recession and pulled in more money than ever this season.

Victory will be worth almost £100 million to the winners and even the losers in the match will expect to earn about £57 million. The study by Professor Simon Chadwick for the MasterCard Heart of Sports Commerce report says that the credit crunch has not affected the Champions League because of the range of evocative ties that had television viewers glued to their sofas and were popular with advertisers and sponsors.

More people have wanted to watch as a form of escapism, spending their spare money on the entertainment of top-level football, which had helped to keep the sport’s finances buoyant.

Chadwick, director of the Centre for the International Business of Sport at Coventry University, estimates that the total value of the Champions League final this season has outstripped the corresponding match in 2008 between United and Chelsea by more than £40 million to hit £272 million in ticket sales, broadcasting revenue, merchandising and sponsorship.Even the city of Manchester should benefit to the tune of about £13 million in increased tourism and business.

“The Champions League proves that major sporting events can overcome the downturn because of their emotional appeal,†Chadwick said. “Some people may choose not to travel to Rome but they will generate economic activity at home. But what comes into play is a recession premium, worth about £22 million to the overall total, with more people engaging as a result of the downturn.â€

I presume to get to that 100mill figure then they are adding together everything - Prize money, TV money, money off the gate, merchandise - everything. Would probably be about right then.

We probably made 50+ when we won it if that's the case.

Spurious as the figures may be, they'll be the kind of thing the Glazers will base their projections on and must surely have an effect on how much they spend.

Then again, when we won it we got a lesser percentage because we finished 4th the year before, no?

Yes I think it's something like that.

Correct. Our share of the TV revenue was based on our league position.

I think that figure is nonsense. There's no real basis for it.

By the time you raech the quarter final you've made the bulk of the money there is to be made from the CL. Anything else is just a nice little bonus
